This was actually one of the first major uses of CGI. At this point in history, animal welfare was already a major concern. It was the period of "no animals were harmed in the making of this film", so care had to be taken with the penguins. The smaller penguins in close up shots are real penguins. The larger emperor penguins, if I recall the director's commentary, are actually people in suits. The distant shots of masses of penguins are actually CGI. It is very primitive CGI; if I remember, they cloned and pasted a lot of real penguins to create the 'mass wave' effect, and if you look closely in the distant shots you can see it clearly, though in the low resolution of the era it was far less noticeable. More primitive version of what was done to greater effect in the gallimimus stampede scene in Jurassic Park. :) An exciting time for special effects!

We have no clue what a Burton directed Batman Forever would've looked like. I'd have anticipated Michael Keaton being invited back to the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. Billy Dee Williams returned as Harvey Dent/Two-Face. It was rumored that Robin Williams was considered for the role of Edward Nyigima/The Riddler. As for the role of Dick Grayson/Robin, not sure whether River Phoenix was considered before his untimely death, or if another big name like Henry Thomas was looked at. Batman Returns kind of had somewhat of a cliffhanger ending with Selina Kyle/Catwoman still being alive and well. Not sure how Dr. Chase Meridian would fit into the story, or if Batman successfully captured Catwoman, and she was sent to Arkham Asylum. If Burton was to have directed Batman & Robin, casting of Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Bane, and Batgirl.

The third movie references the second one in dialogue. The latter two movies carry multiple cast members playing the same characters. The official novelization (or so I have read) explains how Dent helped the image of Batman survive the events of this one. Jack Nicholson was set up to reappear sharing a movie with the Scarecrow. You sound very sure.

It’s still possible for Tim Burton to do a third movie, it would just have to be an animated film which I’m perfectly fine with.
This sequence is mind boggling! A genius combination of puppetry, animatronics, actors in suits, early CGI, and most impressive of all, real trained penguins!
The music in this scene was spectacular.

I love the moment when they all hear Batman's coming each member of the red circus begins to escape. You can see Penguin's reaction that he didn't see that coming and now its up to him to take the bat Those small details are pure perfection for me😍😍♥️
The end with the duck car. Wish my truck could do that!😂
It’s great that Michael Keaton is coming back for The Flash
IMO I put Batman Returns over Batman 89. Because Batman Returns really didn't have any dull moments
