@@exowarrior um wouldn't you think that Bruce Wayne would take precautions when comes to getting a haircut and besides, i think Bruce Wayne has his own hairstylist at a hair salon during the day not at night or either that or Alfred cuts his hair and when it comes to fighting crime all Batmans need time to change into their costume, its not like the during the 1967's Batman series where they just slide down a pole and whala, their costumes are on and when it comes to taking a shit, its like people always say, GO BEFORE YOU LEAVE and i'm pretty sure Bruce Wayne does that.

He almost stumbles a bit the first steps. Like he's been sitting there brooding so long that his legs fell asleep. I can relate to that, I often sit too long on toilet seats at work.

Batman didn't have to say a single word throughout this entire scene and he was completely badass.

@@miltontavares9506 That actually was partly due to Keaton. Batman was supposed to have more lines in this movie but Keaton told the writer to cut majority of it because he felt that Batman's image was enough.

I like how Bruce is in his living room, feeling depressed, but then he drops the depressed act with a bold and determined look when the Bat-Signal beamed on him.

Nolan's Batman also did a lot of things that would result in people being killed in real life. Driving the Batmobile on roofs and sending shingles falling down into the houses below, driving train cars off elevated tracks onto the street below, blowing up cars, dumpsters, etc that are in his way during a chase, smashing concrete barriers into traffic, riding a motorcycle through a crowded shopping mall at top speed... The writers just throw in a line afterward to say that nobody was killed and his reputation is somehow intact.

Batman don't need realism at all. This is theatrical, gothic, dark, magic.True Batman Comic essence.

I'd really like to know where the attitude started that Batman and other superheroes have to be more realistic in movies than Star Wars, or Indiana Jones, or the countless other sci-fi/fantasy movies that are respected and accepted even if they're not as grounded as a Michael Mann film.

forever was quite different, colorful and wild, surely had great visuals. 4th one wasn't bad either in that department but it was just too dumb comedy and yeah, George Clooney, never could stand him as a Batman especially after Keaton and Val Kilmer did such a great job as Batman.

Nothing can top practical effect when its well done...

I love how brutal this Batman was even by 1980s and 90s standards. Blowing up bad guys, setting them on fire using the batmobile, and throwing them to their deaths. Also the way he was so silent, intimidating looking with his glares, and completely unfazed by the gunshots has badass written all over it.

It's crazy how well Tim Burton's Batman movies have aged. I remember being so excited watching Batman Returns for the first time in theatres as kid.

That's awesome to hear! I was lucky enough to work on this movie. It was my first time ever being on a movie set and the whole experience just blew my mind. I've been on HUNDREDS of movie sets since then but nothing I've seen since then can compare. I worked mostly on the set at Stage 16 which was HUGE and had STREETS, plus two tunnels and a giant Christmas tree. When you entered that set - you were IN Gotham City all the way around; 360 degrees - unless you looked up and saw the catwalks & light grid. Spent so many HOURS on that set waiting for them to move the cameras & lights to reset the shot - one day I fell asleep on the stairs of that huge old black Gothic church. I slept in Gotham City for four hours and I'm the kind of person that forgets where I am immediately after I wake up. Imagine waking up in Gotham City and for a second going "WTF? Where am I?... Oh that's right, I'm in Gotham!". I think I was about 22 years old at the time and my best friend was the one who helped me get booked. Back in those days the 2ND A.D. always kept a "spec list" because sometimes background actors just didn't show up. So Mark just took me with him to WB and I was the first to sign the spec list for that day. The way it works is if five people don't show up, but you've got seven people on your spec list - the first five on that list are then given "vouchers" (so you can get paid) and if you GOT a voucher - that means you can come back the next day. Just show them your voucher from the previous day and you're in. And whoever DIDN'T show up - will never work on that production again. I worked on this movie for what seemed like a year but it could have been three months - I don't remember exactly. But after a while it really started to feel like I LIVED in Gotham City.

It's incredible how subtle yet so nuanced was Michael Keaton's acting in this movie. The way his face goes from brooding to surprise to determination so smoothly is a masterclass in acting. Then there is his whole acting with his eyes as Batman... Michael Keaton is the man.

Keaton, easily the best Batman. Even the briefest of facial expressions like at 2:08 with no words communicates his damaged psyche and the trauma of his youth. There's rage there only barely kept in check.

What Makes Michael Keaton's Batman the best ever is he was a man of few words and rarely ever spoke, he always let his actions and facial expressions do the talking for him, when he gave you 'the glare', you knew it was game over. His whole presence and power of intimidation was excellent, he never ever had to tell you who he was, you knew straight away who was coming for you when that shadow appeared.

That and most of what you see in this video was shot on Stage 16 at Warner Brothers which at the time was the largest soundstage in the world. Walking on set was crazy because as long as you didn't look UP... you were in Gotham City; 360 degrees all the way around.

I really liked Michael Keaton's glares as Batman and how haunting and intimidating he looked while in the cape and cowl. Keaton definitely nailed the Bat-glare in these movies. His facial expressions as Batman always looked intimidating and spot on.

Like Batman v superman which sucked. But the marvel movies were getting better when they got darker like when major characters started dying because people would complain that the avengers always win in the end with nobody dying and no consequences. Every final battle in avengers movies felt like nothing was at stake until infinity war and endgame.

Pretty much set the tone to what bat man should be. just like jack nicholson set the tone for joker in the cinema. Tim Burton being the goth guy he has been his entire life was the perfect director. And to only think he was going to make batman more dark but the parents at the time thought batman was too dark for kids smh. I didn't know one kid my age that was afraid of Tim Burtons batman and I saw the movie when I was 8 or 9 years old. Growing up on Adam West batman, this was a breath of fresh air.

I love that Bruce is just sitting there brooding, until the Bat Signal arrives and gives his life meaning.

I always loved that scene at 1:26. The people are on fire and it's like all hope is lost. Then the music plays and the Batmobile arrives and it just screams "BATMAN IS HERE!"

Exactly. Batman represents a good authoritarian figure. He brings order and discipline to an otherwise lost, self-destructive and chaotic world. That's the same reason why I always liked The Dark Knight Returns.

Michelle Pfeiffer should have gotten an Oscar for this performance. Batman Returns is still the greatest Batman comic movie ever made and one of the greatest Christmas movies as well

This is gonna sound weird, but my favorite part of the Burton/Keaton movies is the lighting. Burton KNEW how to do the lighting on Batman. Just look at 3:08. The way his mouth and chin are in shadow while his intimidating eyes look like they’re glowing. THAT is how you shoot a scene with Batman!!!

@Brandon Brooks Listen man, Bale is better simply because his Batman has an actual story. They show us how he trained, how he got his gadgets and most importantly, why he's Batman. Bale's a better actor too. His Batman is human. The most human moment in Burton's Batman is when he talks to Selina Kyle at the end of the movie. Which is one of my favourites Batman moments. Burton doesnt understand Batman as a character

I don't need to know every aspect of his life, darkness and mystery are part of his character. Nolan's concept is too serious and melodramatic. His films are good, but they are just great crime thrillers with a guy who happens to wear a batsuit and his name is Bruce Wayne. I like even the Schumacher's version more. Yeah, Batman and Robin is almost a parody, but still.

They used the shadows perfectly to make Batman more intimidating

Even though this being filmed on a set is obvious , and Nolan's were more in the real world, I loved the gothic Art Deco vibe in these. Stupid studios should have kept Tim Burton. But no, everything has to be family friendly and sell at McDonalds.

Everything is filmed on a set - sometimes that "set" is on location; sometimes it's on a soundstage. This one was filmed mostly on stage 16 at Warner Brothers but some of it was also shot at the "New York Street" facades (also on the WB back-lot). The set we had on 16 was mind blowing - from the outside you just saw plywood but as soon as you stepped past that - you were in Gotham city all the way around; 360 degrees - as long as you didn't look UP and see the catwalks and light grid.

The first Burton film Batman 1989 doesn't look like a set at all the city look was changed because they lost the original designer. Time Burtons films are more comic book fantasy world which works if you like comic books.

Well Bob kane said about tim burtons about directing batman "tim has a great vision. Unfortunately he gets so involved with the characterisation of the villains and the scenic backgrounds that at times he forgets the storyline

3:20 Batman doesn't like small talks.

This scene itself just show the real madness of Gotham City unlike any other batman movies, love it.

Keaton playing as batman, his voice, limited conversation as the dark knight, the persona, the way he badass defeats his enemy, tim burton creative surroundings, that dark humor and that color tone.. My god everything is so simple and yet perfect on every single way. Love it! ❤️

The good ol days when movies weren't full of cgi and felt more real.

There was almost no CGI in the Nolan trilogy Batmobile chases either and the practical effects were far better executed than in this cartoon of a movie. Notice how Schumaker cuts to a close-up whenever a gizmo deploys from the Batmobile, because the gizmo isn't really there.

2:57 that look is very intimidating. Keaton is a badass batman

This is my fave Batman flick. I dig this aesthetic so much. You get the feeling that the whole town is a circus, and BM is just another kooky character.

This has to be one of the best remasters I've EVER seen!!! This looks, no joke, like a modern movie. Unbelievable. (I'm aware it's received a blue filter, but it looks actually pretty wonderful)

The Gotham police in these movies where really bad at their jobs lol

What about the Gotham police in the 60s Adam West series? Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara dread the thought of Batman and Robin being unavailable and having to do the job themselves. XD

Keaton understood Batman the best but the writing captures the character. Batman is a introverted, mysterious kindve mythical character . A figure of few words but he demonstrates thru action what he’s thinking

When people say Pattinsons batman looks dark & gritty, Keaton just shits on him and all of them.

I wouldn't say that Keaton's Batman is dark but much more fantasy fairy tale world-based. The reason people see Pattinson and Nolans Batman as darker is that they feel like the real world which is normally darker than the fantasy comic book world in feel.

Out of all the actors that portrayed Bat Man/Bruce Wayne, Michael Keaton was the most spot on.

The val kimmer batman would've been perfect had they just focus on 1 main villain 2 face would've been perfect but they had to include riddler

Max Ketchum I so agree! But Clooney didn’t make it any better, and you’re so right! It was too many villains, Bane was all wrong, making him a muscle bound imbecile, then on top of that, adding Poison Ivy! It was much too jumbled up, with really, really bad casting!

I forgot how legit Michael Keaton looked in the suit.

The moments where you see the Batmobile roaring towards Gotham were always the most powerful scenes for me. Batman has always been about the power of how one man can make a difference, and its in these scenes that you wonder about the psychology of this man who charges towards battle every night without concern for his safety or wellbeing. Only the mission matters. He is a warrior on his steed - a quintessential "Dark Knight" indeed...

Can’t wait to see him back as the Bat!

Wow, talk about beautiful visuals. These 2 burton films are timeless masterpieces. Keaton is the best Batman, that glare he has. He speaks with his eyes. He wastes no movements in strength. This is just gorgeous Now this is film making. This is live art! This is comic book Batman. I’ve loved it since it came out. Michelle pfiffer is the most well acted catwoman to date.

I'm all for different interpretations of Batman (the hero is decades old), even Batman &Robin (once every 5 years :D)... But 1989 and 1992 are my favourite for exactly the reasons you mentioned. Michael is awesome as Batman. Jack, Danny and Michelle as the main antagonists. The music score. The atmosphere. The batmobile. And so on... I wish Tim & Michael did another one in the 90'. But WB were not crazy about the kinky direction :D

Considering most of this was shot for real, it looks all the more impressive. CGI has been both a curse and a blessing for blockbuster movies lately.

Bale got that voice down pretty good in Batman Begins. It makes sense in the context of the story since he communicates with people he knows personally, but it's not too goofy or anything. It's gotten progressively worse with each future installment, so there's that. Affleck didn't have a bat-voice, and Pattinson was just, I don't know. I couldn't buy him either as Batman or Bruce Wayne. He is a Twilight Batman, as a Batman was made by a 13 year old emo girl.

It changed my life when I worked on it. That was my first time ever being on a movie set - I was hooked since day one and have pursued a career in film ever since. I've been an actor for several years; have an agent; had my first supporting role in a feature film in 2014; currently training at Playhouse West but also have a Master of Fine Arts Degree in TV/Film screenwriting - but it all started with THIS movie (also, my boring "day job" is at Universal Studios).

I agree, I worked on this movie and one day while we were filming on New York Street they brought the ORIGINAL Batmobile by and parked it right next to the 1992 version - no comparison. The new one looked like a jet with wheels.

And he's back. June 2023 can't come fast enough.

Man I can't believe I saw this movie 30 years ago at the movie theaters with my sisters.

The music from Burton's Batman movies is a big part of their greatness. And let's be honest, Keaton created the voice and movements of Batman in the movies, so...

Love or hate this film I think we can all agree it has an amazing score along with its art direction and production design.
