Penang Street Food: Duck Kway Chap at Restoran Kimberly
►Penang street food at Restoran Kimberly, get more details here: wp.me/psd9b-5y0
Eating was my main priority when I was in Penang, and one evening my wife and I decided to go check out a Penang legendary street food restaurant called Restoran Kimberly, famous for serving duck kway chap. In Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia (originally from China), kway chap, a soup with noodle rolls, is quite popular. But the thing is, it’s typically made just with pork - it’s known as a serious pork lovers dish. So when in Penang, I was quite excited to try kway chap made with duck, and to eat at this extremely popular restaurant.
Restoran Kimberly is located on Penang’s Kimberly Street, a street that’s quite famous for its street food selection, mainly Chinese food available. I stayed not too far from the street in George Town, and there were many delicious things to eat and try. But even with all the street food and restaurants, no other restaurant came even close to attracting as many customers as Restoran Kimberly - this was clearly the stall that stood out as the most popular. Every night there was a line trailing into the street from the ordering station at the front of the cart. So one night, Ying and I headed to Restoran Kimberly early in the evening, about 5 pm, and luckily they were open, and they weren’t too busy yet. Restoran Kimberly has tables set up along the sidewalk as well as within the indoor section, but the food is served from a street food cart that sits along the road - so though they have an indoor section, it’s officially hawker style Malaysian food.
We ordered two bowls of their speciality, duck kway chap filled with all the toppings and all the goodies on top. It didn’t take long for our bowls of kway chap to arrive to our table, piping hot and fresh. The top of the bowl included pieces of braised duck, congealed blood, and some random pig parts - which I thought were duck at first, but I soon realized it also included pork. Underneath the meats were the kway chap noodle rolls, an egg that wasn’t visible until I ate half my bowl of noodles, and everything submerged in the dark flavorsome broth. I started eating this famous Penang street food dish by sampling the broth. It was rich and slightly oily, with a complex depth of flavor that tasted like ducks that had been braising for hours. It was marvelous.
The noodle rolls were slightly sticky, but very soft, just sort of melted in my mouth along with the broth. Then I started to eat all the goodies - the duck was extremely tender and juicy, and there were some interesting textured and looking other ingredients like pig’s ears and intestines. The intestines were delicious, especially when dipped in the sour chili sauce provided. The egg, braised in the same broth was also excellent. On top of my bowl of kway chap there was also a sprinkle of fried garlic and green onions to give it an extra touch of fragrance. The combination of all the ingredients in the duck kway chap at Restoran Kimberly was amazing, and I think it’s one of the top Chinese street food dishes to try in Penang.
If you want to visit, here are the details of the restaurant, and if you’re staying in the heart of George Town, it’s very easy to get here.

Does anyone remember Galloping Gourmet with chef Graham Kerr?? His cooking show way back when, I was very young then, reminds me of Marks expression when eating. Graham Kerr also has that same expression without the head tilt.

this is a late comment but basically laksa has a soup based of shredded fish, the whole soup is micro pieces of fish, and the reason it was sweet is because of the shrimp paste they added on your laksa, alot of people dislike it because of the same reason haha
He never blinks..ever
It's pig ear. They're really nice to go with braised duck.
Yeah! I am first to watch This video and comment!
