pen turning for beginners

Pen turning for beginners. Just my "spin" how I make a slimline pen. It's easy, and you can do it.

Nicely done, Mike. I have made many pens and given them as gifts often. The blanks available on the net make finding an appropriate choice for a special friend. (e.g., military blanks for all branches, school colors,,,etc)

I enjoyed watching you make this pen, Mike. I'd love to see you do other projects on the lathe that would be appropriate for absolute newbies like me. There's a lot of lathe videos on KZread, but most are for people who are experienced on the lathe. Thanks for the video.

Good job Mike! I've never had very good luck with using the pen mill to square the blanks up, especially with segmented blanks. I use a sanding jig from Turner's Warehouse, bought a set of punches from Harbor Freight and flatten the ends on the sander. If you want to turn acrylic blanks check out The Classic Nib under their "Classic Castings" heading. They're made with Polyester Resin so they turn great. Good people to deal with. :)

Can you cover a bit more of the actual turning the part where you start getting close to the mandrel. Like how do I still turn the wood down, and avoid the sharp edge hitting the metal. Also, maybe add putting the pieces on the mandrel. Good video, I have a few pen kits, but haven’t gotten to them.

Thanks for your feedback Scott. When I get close to the bushings I just carefully make real light passes until its really close, then I usually sand it even. But I must say. I'm no professional. I tend to buy a few sets of bushings and have been known to bump the tool into it a few times. Lol. Thanks for watching and your comment.
