The Armor Auto is fantastic. Plastic yes but very thick plastic. It seems really durable. We’ve done a lot building with it.

Thanks a lot for this really informative and nicely done video. I have a Milescraft pocket hole jig that has worked wonderfully for some years, it has the same form factor as the Kreg k3 jig but smaller in size and less expensive. After experiencing that jig I was convinced I don't need to spend a lot on those Kreg jigs, they are way overpriced. Now I'm looking for a pocket hole jig to make it fixed in a base, like the ones in this video. I really like the Massca M1 and M2 models, they seem to be well constructed and cost a lot less. Also there's a brand called Howod that has a nice all metal pocket hole jig at an excellent price. I guess most of these jigs are made by the same manufacturer in Asia and then rebranded.

The massca is built like a tank and I love it. I totally agree about the cheapness of the latest Kreig jigs. I really like the original one, the ones after that have progressively gotten flimsier

Yeah, the original 1980s Kreg is an all metal, little beast! It is a bit crude in its design and construction, and of course no vacuum capability, which is really necessary in production use, but I have had it for about 40 years, I think, and it's indestructible!

Awesome video and summary, Mike! I've been using my 720 Pro and have generally been happy (I'm also one of the weirdos that uses it in the 90 degree rotation for narrow, but long, pieces). I'm not thrilled with the drop in plastic quality vs. the K5 (quite disappointed, really) and the unit is just so big! If I were to buy one right now, I think I would go with the Massca M2, just as you recommended.

Thanks Cole. I remember seeing your review where you used the 720 for panel sheet goods. Like I said everyone's shop and neefs are different. I think if the 720 was built like the K-4, K-5. It would probably have been my choice. If you interested in the Massca M2. I would reach out to them. They are a wonderful group of people. They also love to work with creators like yourself. Just got the auto-jig. Excited to use it. I feel like it’s east of use is underrated. I think it’s the closest thing to the K5 in regards to build quality. I want to agree with the masca being the best choice here but there seems to be too many moving parts for me. I just want something that gets me to making pocket holes quickly and accurately.

I’d buy the M2 because of its durability unless I were making cabinets, then I’d buy the 720 because of the closer two-pocket holes option the other two don’t have. I would have liked to see the pocket holes cut into different materials other than construction lumber. I’ve heard the 720 makes the cleanest, splinter-free pocket holes because it clamps tight with downward pressure as well. Thank you for the video!

Hands-down it would be the masks jig Once again love your videos keep it up

Good job Mike! I'll stick with my K5 for now as it's still working just fine. If I had to replace my K5 I think I'd go with the Massca and replace the hold down mechanism with the auto-adjust from the Armor. Someone (can't remember who) did a video on it and I believe you can change it out. :)

Good video, good information, and objective. One difference with the Massca, is the angle of the holes, they are more vertical, provide a pulling force that is more straight down. And not as much pulling the wood in.

@@coppulor6500 when you tighten the screw very tight, like over tightening, it can pull the wood further, missing you line. Look at Shara Woodshop diaries, she has a good video on pocket screws.

@@coppulor6500 haven’t tested one to say yes or no. I have an old Kreg that still works.

Been using a Kreg K5 for many years. One feature I like about it is that it has two storage compartments that slide into dovetails on the drilling base that also function as support extensions for longer material. I keep the standard drill bits and related items in one compartment, and the micro bit in the other. I wish it had the locking mechanism of the 720. If you do a lot of face frames, the drill spacing on the Kreg makes its simple. If the Massca had this feature (don't see why Massca can't modify a future model) I'd replace my K5 with the Massca. One drawback to all it seems is the screw length for what passes as 3/4 plywood nowadays...always need to jack with the stop collar setting to keep the screw from popping through the backside of the material...reat PITA.

Awesome video and I do love my Massca M2 as well but no experience with the other two. Sure seems the Kreg could be built better at that price. Great video.

How is the wear of the numbers on the M2? I returned my m2 after the first use because clamp started scratching paint and I didn't see the numbers it lasting, also the collar adjuster seems easy to lose, and having to deal with all the screws was a pain. I got the Armor portable model and it's flimsy like a Kreg, but has better plastic. If I was building something more important than a chicken coop I would probably not use Armor's portable jig because of the flex.

I've been using my Kreg for over 15 years. I use it a LOT. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the new model has but it has worked just fine for me. Perhaps all these features contributes to making it seem flimsy? Perhaps today''s jig quality has drastically fallen over the years? I don't know, but what I do know is that my jig has served me well over the years and there is no sign of it wearing out. I'll be using it for many more years to come.

Thanks Bobby, I like all the pocket hole jigs I've used. I have a Kreg K4 and still use it as well. It's a much stronger plastic. I know Kreg moved to being made in China. Where before it was made in the USA. All and all, I use them equally. And the performance is very similar. I hope you get many more years out of your Kreg jig. Good review but I'm wondering why you compared the kreg 720 instead of the Kreg k4? The k4 is still available and seems like it's more compatible with the Massca M2. The Kreg 720 is a very different machine. I'd love to see a clean review of the M2 and the K4. I'll keep looking!

Mascca I bought one on sale for $90 and took the kreg to the pawn shop and got $50 for it and it works great. Like it a lot better no flex higher quality and only spent $40 for the up grade. Mascca makes a 3 hole block for about $40 and thier X jig works better than biscuits

The drawback to the Massca is that the clamping lever is on the backside. With a large panel you simply cannot reach it. And I do not want to disassemble the jig as a solution.

I agree. That would be the number one reason to not buy anything with a rear clamp.

would be kind of hard to use the massca on the big sheet of plywood. the clamp is on the wrong side of the jig. should be out front where you can use it. good enough for face frames, but i use my kreg for drilling counter blanks to attach hardwood edging

I like the idea of the ease of use of the armor tool. I'm waiting for reviews to come in of the armor mini jig before buying one though. The clamp on the masca looks to be a pain. I will be avoiding kreg...

Even though the mini supposedly "launched" like 6 months ago, I haven't seen a single review or report from someone who has one. I don't think you're alone in not receiving it...the price is low enough to make me want to hold out though to see if I really need a bigger pocket hole jig or if it's enough to get by. Thanks for your videos though, really enjoy them!

Do all 3 jigs cut the pocket at the same angle? I've considered the Castle because it cuts a longer but shallower pocket so the screw is driven more directly into the opposite piece. So, do any of these jigs do something similar to the Castle?

Hi Earl, great question that I never addressed. Yes, the Massca jig is at a slightly straighter angle. It uses the same screws as the others but is definitely at a different angle. Hi, I'm late to the comments here, but I have a question that you don't address in the video. You perform a large panel boring function in the video, which I do often with a late 1990s or early 2000s original vacuum attachment model Kreg, and the orientation of the clamping lever allows this one-sided operation. I like the construction and quality of the Massca, but do they make a jig with same sided clamping and drilling/ boring? Of the four Kreg jigs I have, going back to the original all metal 1980s version.. they eventually converted them to same -sided clamp and drill. Seems like a big miss if Maasca doesn't offer any model like that.

I've seen several reviews of this Kreg jig and they all make comments on the material not being as good as previous Kreg products.

The Harbor Freight pocket hole jig is exceptional. It’s all aluminum construction, sturdy, accurate, and affordable.

If you were upgrading from the Kreg R3, like I am thinking of doing where the Massca advantage would be moot, would you pick the Kreg over the Armor?

Hey Bill. I think I would go with Kreg at that point. And Armor seems to be out of stock for a while now. Not sure what's going on there. But. Like I said, I like pocket hole jigs in general. I like the Kreg720 for the 3 hole spacing. The other 2 don't have it. Or in Armors case, need to be setup. Keep me posted if you upgrade and how you like it.

I was originally thinking of the 720 pro but figure that I can make a couple of boxes from plywood to take the place of the wing containers since I will most likely be fastening the jig to a plywood base anyway. I'll let you know how it works out.

Love the dust collection of the Massca even in portable mode! I hadn't realized and it's super lame that Kreg removed the dual functionality of the pocket-hole jig like the k4 and k5 had, that were also seemingly built much better. I have the k4 and the k5 fixed any of the issues with the k4 and this new one just appears to be such a step backwards. They massively downgraded from the k5. A lot of their crap is just that, cheap crap now.

I never owned the Kreg K5. I hear is great. But Kreg canceled production as the 720 hit the market. I do think, long term, the Massca is a better investment. It really seems to be built to last. Of course, this is just my opinion. Thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate that.

Great video! The massca pro m2 is going for $120 right now and the Kreg k5 for $120 or the kreg k4 for $99. Would the messca still be the best option? I never use a pocket jig but looking to invest in one.

@@Woodcraft716 one more question. The kreg has 3 holes at the top for the pocket is that for skinnier wood that the tye 2 outer holes are too wide for? If so how do you use the massca? Do you just have to tap one hole then move it over alittle bit and that the other?

@@mikeganard6751 so the Kreg720 "short" holes are for 1 1/2" X 1 1/2 . When I use the M2, I just drill and bump it over. I am a big fan of the 3 holes, but it doesn't take long to move it over on the Massca. I prefer the quality of Massca over the plastic Kreg. So for me, it's worth the time. Again, I do like all 3 jigs. It kinda sounds like I work for Massca. Lol. Good question. Sorry for the long answer.

The M2 handle is on the opposite side. Making large sheet goods a bit hard to handle. But, the M2 does come apart for a portable pocket-hole jig. So, if it was my only jig, I could take it apart and use it on a large sheet. At least, that's my thoughts. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment Bob. 👍

No matter what I do with the masca m2 it causes tear out like crazy as others have mentioned. I even called customer service for a new bit… but yielded same results. This is on plywood, and solid lumber. Great that its metal but not designed properly. I’d go with the kreg… seems like they figured out the angle properly.

I never did care for the plastic of the K4. I keep waiting for it to break or crack. It's been nearly 20 years but I know that one of these decades it's going to fail. If my grandkids inherit it I'll have to warn them in my will.

Lol. I have a K4 as well, and I think its close 20 years old too. The only issue I have is the brass pin on the height adjustment has dinged up the plastic on the guid block. So, I'm assuming you will have to worn the grandkids in your will. Haha. Great comment.

I have a Kreg. It’s okay, but I will be getting the Castle 110. By far better than these, but more $$.

I just messaged Armor Tool. Anthony over there , said they are out of stock until next week. For what it's worth.

Kreg is overpriced garbage with a cult following. I don't get it. Some of their traditional more simple jigs were fine... but I can't believe the prices Kreg commands for such cheap, plastic crap.

I have the Kreg K4 and when I bought it, it was basically the only game in town with the exception of some cheap Chinese knock offs. I bought it so long ago that it came in a nice rugged plastic case, an instructional DVD and a bunch of plans for building things. It was real quality. Now unfortunately, it has moved it's manufacturing to China (of course) and the newest iteration is pretty flimsy plastic. It works okay, but just does not have the build quality of the K4. The Armor Tool jig is rock solid, and has a real nice heft to it, it is also designed really well. I don't have the Massca yet, but I am sure I will pick one up soon.

You can text mascca and they will get right back with you for upgrades. I did and they called about 3 minutes later. They are all about upgrades.
