Pelvic Floor Physical Therapist Top 3 Stretches to Manage an Overactive Bladder (OB)

Clinic Director Lindsey Fonacier, PT, DPT is back with 5 exercises 🧘‍♀️ you can do if you have an overactive bladder (OAB). OAB is when you have a frequent and urgent need to urinate 🚽 that can be difficult to control.
If you feel like your bladder is taking over your life😅, pelvic floor physical therapy can help. 33 million people in the US suffer from OAB💔. This number may be higher because many do not seek treatment, due to feeling embarrassed, fearful and/or feeling alone. 🚨🚨YOU ARE NOT ALONE🚨🚨 Our pelvic floor therapists, create a safe space to receive non-judgemental treatment and help facilitate difficult or stressful conversations. At Foothills, our #1 goal🥅 is to help you get your life back.

    If have OAB, with even a tight pelvic floor as I have both of these; then the stretches will help. Id recommend everyone get the book "headache in the pelvis" and you may even need a urologist for OAB medication (Tolterodine) which will also help. This is a marathon not a sprint.

    from what i'm reading bladder issues tend to affect women more but after years of doing a very intense abs workout, age caught up with me, apparently. gonna try these stretches to see if they can solve what the doctors couldn't. once u start down this path, u find there are lots of articles out there regarding abs/core workouts causing extreme tightening of the pelvic floor muscles, for men and women alike.

    Michelle Kenway has some really good exercises that work directly on the pelvic floor. I've started with that a few weeks ago. She said that it takes 5-6 months for results to show, so you have to be patient. I think the exercises shown here might help but to me they seem very indirect? And I cannot physically do them either, hihi. I'd say check out Michelle's vid. She is totally great and very thorough with how to do it, how to do it right, how many repetitions etc.

    That's awesome!! We need more people to spread the word and be advocates in this area! If you don't plan on going to school, I would follow pelvic floor physical therapists on KZread and Instagram, such as the Vagina Whisper, Pelvic Floor Experts, etc. Our Pelvic Floor Therapist take advanced courses, but you would need to be a PT first.

    Lindsey's general recommendation is to hold stretches between 30 and 60 seconds for 2-3 sets. It is always recommended to follow up with a medical professional as there could be multiple factors that contribute to OAB.

    I do stretches all day long . I also am able to put my legs behind my head . Yet I still have issues from time to time but I also drink water all day long . I have been doing s lot of one legged standing trying to build balance back up . I have seen that it has been getting better since I have started working out all the time which my workouts are gymnastics stretches mixed with dance and boxing I also added in plank like standing muscle clenching threw out . Also I have been doing little muscle contractions to build muscle because what can be clinched is being worked out . I am proud of what I have been able to change about my body . It's been hard work and will be for the rest of my life . I will never be able to go time without working out or I will gain to 215 again and I refuse . I do take days off but it's reluctantly but I do not want to gain back the 65 pounds I have lost . So I put in today what I want out tomorrow and keep on keeping on .

Every time i laugh too hard i would have a whole explosion and every time i would try to hold it it it would still come. Do you know if this exercise would work or not? I really want to get rid of it before i go into high school where it gets even more embarrassing.. thanks!

    Hello ! I really reaaally suggest that ( if you can of course) you go seek help NOW ASAP. Just like you I started having problems with my bladder, I went to an urology doctor ( I don't remember what he told my mom ,we didn't do anything about it) *FAST FORWARD* now I'm 26 AND THIS IS HELL suddenly it got worst... I wake up like 5 times every night to pee just a little, I visit the bathroom like 13 times in a day. So K went again by my own , turns out I have overactive bladder and there's a bunch of foods that you shouldn't eat so you can take care of the friking bladder and guess what? It was basically almost everything I eat (chocolate, tea, coffee, spicy food, citrus fruits) I'm doing the changes now but if you start to take care of it now you won't have to feel the way I do when you reach my age. Good luck!

    @Scofield I do pelvic floor exercises mostly because I leak now. It takes about 2 to 3 months of exercising to fully strengthen your bladder to stop leaking from what I know. Doing these stretches for about 4 eights should help:)

  • @isabelawyeong3777

    @isabelawyeong3777

    @Scofield Hmm how much I pee actually depends on how much I drink usually but to answer the question only about 8 to 9 times a day. Another trick to healing OAB is to try to hold your pee in for around 2 hours before going to the toilet.

  • @isabelawyeong3777

    @isabelawyeong3777

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Scofield if holding it for 2 hours is too long, try one hour. And don't drink a lot of water at one go, it's actually not recommended at all. Try taking 2 to 3 sips at one time and just drink periodically throughout the day and try to finish 8 to 10 cups of water. If you start to stop drinking water, it will be worse for you because over time you will see the need to drink water more and more and that won't help your OAB.
