This is what Pella was like during the 1950's. You could hear Dutch conversations everywhere. You could not get a job in a retail store before WWII if you were not bilingual. There were still Dutch church services at least once a month. My parents were bilingual. I had a grandfather that could not speak English, so I never had a conversation with him. Grandma had to translate everything. My generation could have been brought up bilingual, but wasn't. The reason for me was that my father (born in Pella) could not speak English when he started school and felt humiliated. A five year old vowed that if he ever had kids, they would not be taught Dutch. The result was that we missed out on being raised bilingual. My family is proud of its Noord-Brabant, Utrecht and Gelderland heritage. Six of our immediate family have also worn U.S. uniforms and three still do.

You could still learn Dutch if you're interested! While it's not common in Pella anymore, it still is in the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname! :D

@@ikbintom I'm very proud of my mom; she grew up in Pella but never learned very much Dutch, but now she's taken classes for many years and traveled to Holland and other dutch speaking countries to study. She even taught some introductory classes in Dutch in Pella when she was living there part time a few years ago. I hope other people in Pella learn to speak the Dutch of their parents and grandparents.

It's always interesting to me how different groups can have different origins! I have no relation to Pella, but my dad's family are Dutch Americans from what once was New Netherlands While my namesake actually comes from Amsterdam directly, most of the Dutch who moved to New Netherlands came from the far south of there, speaking Zeelandic and West Flemish dialects, which is likely what they ended up speaking until the language mostly died out (probably earlier in my family than in others since they converted to methodism, the Dutch Reformed Church being one of the mainstays tying the Dutch speaking community there together)

Voor wie hier meer over wil weten: er is uitgebreid studie naar de taal van Nederlanders in de VS gedaan, in Pella en andere plaatsen waar Nederlanders naartoe zijn geëmigreerd. Jo Daan van het Meertens-instituut dacht in de jaren '50 van de vorige eeuw daar een soort museum van Nederlandse dialecten aan te treffen. Dat viel tegen. Het bleek dat er heel veel taalverlies was opgetreden in de loop van de decennia en dat er geen aparte dialecten werden gesproken maar een lingua franca (of pigeon-taal) bestaande uit allerlei dialecten vermengd met het Nederlands van de Statenvertaling van de bijbel (die kenden ze namelijk allemaal). Omdat er dus geen zuivere dialecten meer gesproken werden veranderde het onderzoeksonderwerp naar taalverlies. Daarover is een boekje verschenen: 'Ik was te bissie, Nederlanders en hun taal in de Verenigde Staten (Zutphen, Walburg Pers 1987). Ik heb indertijd als stagiair bij het Meertens-instituut nog meegeholpen de vragenlijsten en interviews die daar afgenomen waren te coderen en statistisch onderzoek te doen naar correlaties tussen taal(-verlies) en sociaal-economische factoren. Die bleken er niet te zijn.

Ik vind taalverlies een vrij negatieve en puriteinse term. Als mensen in staat zijn om een organische nieuwe taal te vormen vanuit twee andere talen dan is dat nog steeds een verrijking ten opzichte van een gemeenschap waarin maar één taal gesproken wordt, op één manier.

Realised they were talking about me. So talked to them in German; 'Ihr hat recht/ You're right.' The look on their faces was priceless.

Ach ja .. bestaat het Nederlands in Nederland nog over 50 jaar ? .. zeker met internet/online video games zijn we als Nederlanders zo gewoon om engels te praten/mailen/chatten met elkaar. Ik ben zelf 53 .. geboren en opgegroeid in Nederland, nu wonende in België en ik zie iedere generatie meer en meer engels in hun vocabulair gebruiken.

@@antoinebeauman Ja hoor, het Nederlands bestaat dan gewoon nog. Taalkundigen zijn het daar wel over eens. Al die Engelse leenwoorden zijn straks ook weer weg, vervangen door andere woorden uit het Engels of welke taal dan ook. Zoals dat altijd al is gegaan. ​@@virgilioaarsbergen5889 Alles in het leven is aan verandering onderhevig, ook taal en cultuur. Jongeren hebben altijd straattaal gebruikt, dat is van alle tijden. Mijn ouders zeiden "te gek!", Wij zeiden "wreed", de generale erna zei "vet" en nu zeggen ze "tantoe lauw". Ik vind het juist wel mooi dat taal zo vormbaar is.

Dit is niet een of ander Hollands dialect, dit is Zuid-Gelders! Al gebruiken ze wel "je" in plaats van het "ge" dat algemeen is in dergelijke dialecten.

Met Zuid-Gelders bedoel ik in ruime zin het gebied tussen de Maas en de Nederrijn, alsmede het zuiden van de Achterhoek nabij Emmerik (ten noorden van de Rijn). Veluws ligt daar net ten noorden van, maar in principe gaan dialecten geleidelijk over van regio tot regio, dus het is niet gek als je gelijkenissen hoort.

As a Dutchman in the Netherlands it makes me proud and honored that these people still pass on their family's legacy including the language. Not too long ago my family had a complete family gathering in a church in the town here we are named after... Beilen, because of family name is "van Beilen" (van meaning from). We had people from all over the world including the US, Canada, Caribbean and so on. So it would be great if you pass on your native language because you never know when you'll be invited to a huge family gathering, and it's nice if you can still communicate with one another. That said I also am proud that these men say they are American and I wouldn't want to see it any other way, because whilst heritage is important I feel that you should integrate within the culture you live in, especially when you're brought up in it. Which is sadly not the case here in the Netherlands anymore with the pushed and promoted multi-cultural aspect the country today, as each person with foreign heritage seems to cling to the culture of the land they originated from... Turks and Moroccans feel they are more Turkish or Moroccan than they are Dutch. This sadly causes a lot of friction within this country. So please be a proud American but I also hope you pass on your heritage, because don't forget that it's the Dutch who made America great. Donuts are Dutch, Independence declaration is almost identical to the Dutch one from the Spanish (Plakkaat van Verlatinghe), Stock Exchange is Dutch, Capitalism is Dutch, etc. So there is definitely pride and honor to be had in both! America first... The Netherlands second? 😉

@@tb9087 That is only later. Please dive into your history about the Pilgrim Fathers. You can still visit their lodge here in the Netherlands by the way. The Dutch created the foundations to make the USA great, but the other countries indeed build upon that and made it even greater over time.

Funny to hear these old sayings. I still know them for some reason but almost nobody in the Netherlands knows them anymore. I could understand almost everything they were saying. At some point I thought they had a bit of a flemish accent. Most of the time the accent was exactly the same as that which my family who emigrated to Canada in the early fifties had.

It is only weird to people who are able to speak only one language. Most Europeans can easily switch between languages.

Aroynd 1975 I knew an olf gentlemen in Arlington VA , born in Pella. His mother cam from Dordrecht and moved to Pella in the 1860 and his father also came to the US ( also from the Netherlands) somewhat later. Bill Rhijnsburger was his name . He always used to make me laugh saying "Ach toch " often . Sometimes he would say other things in , for me, oldfashioned Dutch and could not really understand being a young girl from Holland. He was a great guy and I am glad I can mention his name and remenber him. 😊

Ik versta hun toespraak alleen omdat ik vloeiend Nederlands en Engels spreek. Deze kennis geeft mij de mogelijkheid om Afrikaans (Keuken Nederlands), Duits en, in mindere mate, Jiddisch te begrijpen.

Ik ben daar geweest, maar het was daar helemaal niet gezellig. Alles zag er weliswaar erg typisch Oud-Nederlands uit, maar de mensen waren totaal niet geïnteresseerd in Nederland/Europa. Erg in zichzelf gekeerd superconservatief religieus stadje.

Wel leuk dat je daar geweest bent! Het is natuurlijk wel logisch, want we hebben er niet echt onze meest gezellige mensen heengestuurd, haha. De conservatiefste lui gingen daarheen om een 'beter' (d.w.z. meer religieus) land te stichten. Een deel van mijn familie is zo rond 1800 ook daarheen gegaan. Dat waren toen degenen die 'gereformeerd' nog steeds niet streng genoeg vonden. Als je van zo ver moet komen duurt het natuurlijk eeuwen voordat het eens een beetje progressiever wordt, de wereld met een open blik bekeken wordt en je geinteresseerd bent in anderen. Jammer. Ze vertegenwoordigen ons land toch een beetje.

as a speaker of modern Dutch I can understand these men fine, but I can imagine if I use modern Dutch sentence constructions and difficult words that they do not understand, but do not have the impression if someone just uses simple sentence constructions they just understand contemporary Dutch it is also a matter of just doing it

Klinkt een beetje als Veens :). T lijkt net of ik een stel oude ooms hoor praten.

Ja dat gaat al over in een halve eeuw. Ik bekijk KZread en zie dat van alles en nog wat, dat nu in Nederland woont. Ik ben nu met de corona virus helemaal los, ik mocht dus niet eens op vakantie komen. Dat geeft dus niks ookal krijg ik me geld ook niet terug van het hotel dat ik al betaald had. Die lui hebben mij dus een dienst bewezen nu wil ik het niet eens meer. Fijn naar het land waar mijn vrouw vandaan komt, daar zijn we tenminste welkom.

Ze zijn ook niet Nederlands, maar amerikanen van Nederlandse afkomst. Groot verschil.

Zuid-Nederlands, maar zeker niet Vlaams (Vlaams = ten westen van de Schelde en de Denderstreek). Bovendien hoort Vlaams ook bij het Nederlands taalgebied. Het dialect van deze mannen komt van zuidelijk Gelderland (Zuid-Gelders) en de dialecten daar hebben onder andere een "zachte g", ge/gij (deze mannen toevallig niet), verkleinwoorden met -ke (teske/jeske/menneke) en woorden waarbij de t/d aan het einde wordt weggelaten (da/wa/nie). Dit zijn allemaal typisch Brabantse kenmerken.

@@hisss Vanuit linguïstisch perspectief is Zuid-Gelders Brabants. Dat is Noord-Limburgs bijvoorbeeld ook. Vanuit geografisch/historisch perspectief worden de dialecten echter niet daartoe gerekend.

@@willemf9885 maar waarom moet iemand zich verbonden voelen met maar één land? Natiestaten in de betekenis van vandaag de dag zijn een relatief nieuw concept, dus in die zin is het onlogisch dat men zich verbonden voelt met een natiestaat. "verbondenheid" met een land is een politiek middel, zodat leiders onderdanen aan zich kunnen binden om op die manier in hun eigen belangen te voorzien. Nazi's voelden ook een verbintenis met hun land. Zo diepe verbinding zelfs, dat mensen van een ander "ras" maar massaal moesten sterven.

I'm a American with dutch roots no that's a lie .

You see this Dutchies? They live since the 1800 in the US and they STILL speak Dutch! If that happened here with like Turkish or Moroccans (the last one definitly won't speak their motherlanguage 'cause in homes most kids especially the 3d and 4th generation of Berber decent already talk Dutch to their parents because they can't speak Berber/Riffian) speaking their ancestors language the Dutch (okay some Dutch not all of them just to be clear) will get a stroke for sure. But they do LOVE this; old Americans with Dutch ancestors living in a village established by the Dutch in the 1800's still speaking a older version of Dutch but still very very understandable, celebrating Dutch traditions etc. That's okay but if this happens in the Netherlands.....🤷‍♀️

Wat is nu eigenlijk het punt dat je probeert te maken? Dat Turken en Marokkanen in Nederland geen Turks/Arabisch/Berber meer kunnen spreken, of dat als ze dat wel doen de autochtone bevolking daar van opkijkt? Allebei onzin namelijk, maar mogelijk heb ik je compleet verkeerd begrepen en probeerde je een heel ander punt te maken...

Different times, different places, different circumstances. If we were an immigrant society, a "Moroccan" village on the once-barren Veluwe tracing their roots back to the 1800s but ascribing to the dominant culture in every significant way would probably be considered part of the national heritage. The marginalized descendants of the Hunebedbouwers might disagree.

@@hisss maybe you're right only time will tell but fact is there are already fourth generations of both Turkish and Moroccans and more generations of Surinams etc and unfortunately there are still white Dutchies (just to be clear) who do not concider them Dutch cause they don't look like a typical Dutch person. But only time will tell.

@@ansibarius4633 you are right. The only difference with the US and the Netherlands is; the US was and is always been a stolen land (from the Indians) so even English is the language of the occupier. If the Dutch didn't trade New Amsterdam for the ABC Islands and Suriname etc the main language would be Dutch and not English. It would not be the language the Indians speak even though it is their land.

Their accent is more flemish than dutch dutch to me actually. So belgian dutch in fact. They don't say 'jij' they say 'gij', their whole speech is more flemish than dutch actually. At the end one of the guys says 'dat zal ik wel doen' in a way only flemish people do.

The people who settled Pella are from Zuid-Gelderland. I grew up close to Nijmegen and this intonation is normal to me. So it is in fact not Belgian Dutch, you can find this easily on wikipedia as well by the way. I do get a lot of people from the randstad asking me if I'm Belgian...

@@sisqonum1 Het oosten van het land of wat wij in het westen noemen "boeren" hebben dezelfde boerse uitspraak. Als je het nederlands van 100 jaar geleden wilt zien lees dan eens de nederlandse literatuur van die tijd. Kijk dat je bijdehand wilt doen is prima, maar met een naam als Rosaria gonzales verlies je wel elke vorm van credibiliteit.

@@ShannaNL zoals I'm al zei onzin! Plus wat is er mis met mijn NAAM? Ik dacht dat we het hadden over het filmpje.. Of kan je niet tegen dan een Portugees je op je plek zet omdat het niet juist is wat je uitkraamt. Het klopt gewoon niet wat je zegt, ja ze zijn geen 100jr toen ze het filmpje opnamen maar dit is zeker wel een oud Holland accent! Dat zeggen ze zelf in het filmpje (opletten) zoek het op! Lees je literatuur nog eens. Daarnaast heb je ook zoiets als, spreek en schrijftaal 2 verschillende dingen. In iedergeval, I rest my CASE. nu mag je strx ook weer een comment maken over mijn huidskleur. Dan is het cirkeltje rond

@@sisqonum1 Meid, je hebt geen idee waar je het over hebt. Je bent een goed voorbeeld van een falend onderwijssysteem of binnengewappert en denkt dat je dan enige creditibiliteit hebt om te oordelen over iets waar je geen weet van hebt. Leuk dat je van de andere kant van de wereld bent gekomen maar nu eens door Nederland reizen. Diegene die wel door emigratie een vorm van 100 jaar oud Nederlands hebben zijn de Zuid-Afrikanen. En in zekere vorm zelfs de Belgen. Maar dit... Is boers Nederlands. En om je verdere "rest my case" te beantwoorden. Verlies je BLM niveau van slachtoffergevoel, want ik wordt er niet warm of koud van. Deze idiote pogingen om iemand de mond te willen snoeren was misschien politiek correct in de jaren 80 toen er alles mee gemoeid was zoveel mogelijk naar binnen te halen om de lonen te drukken, maar wordt nu niet meer getolereerd. Ga lekker op de Dam staan.
