Peek-a-boo boxing footwork tutorial: How do the Damato shift and the D'amato Shoot. You can practice this at home or at the gym.
This is a classic Mike Tyson style Footwork technique that you can incorporate in to your own peek-a-boo boxing style
The first Peek A Boo boxing footwork technique is known as the Damato shift. Named after the late, great trainer and inventor of the Peekaboo boxing style Cus D'amato.
The D'amato shift is a technique that is used to confuse the enemy, the way it works is while you're engaging with your opponent, you will twist your body and rotate your feet so that your back foot will move to where your front foot is and your front foot will go around to the side of your opponent.
If you've done it correctly, you'll whole body will be out to the side of your opponent and you will probably be in a reverse stance, either southpaw or orthodox depending on which side you shifted out to. This is also commonly known as the switch step because you're switching stances.
A great example of this peekaboo technique in action was when Mike Tyson knocked out Buster Mathis Jr Tyson shifted out to his left. Mathis for a second was confused as Tyson had just disappeared out of sight. The BOOM he landed 2 right uppercuts and that was it, he was out.
The second peekaboo boxing footwork technique is called a shoot. This one is similar to the shift in the fact that it is a technique to get you out to the side of your opponent. But with this one, instead of twisting your body, you're going to push off one of your legs to spring your whole body out to the side of your opponent.
The best example of this technique being used is when Mike Tyson fought Don Halpin. He used 2 shoots with the exact technique I explained and he actually did it on both sides, so I definitely recommend going and watching that figh
The whole concept of getting out to the side of your opponent is to "Put yourself in a position where you can hit your opponent but he can't hit you. That's what the science of boxing is all about" - Cus D'amato
There is a best time and situation to use either the Damato shift or the shoot and I give my opinion on the matter in the video. I hope you enjoy!

In my school of koryu martial arts we call this footwork Kaze no kamae. "wind movements" and one of the first movements you learn along with water movements or mizu no kamae. there is so much more to it than what you are showing, but very glad to see that its starting to get tracktion amongst fighters.

funnily enough boxers also started taking the pivot step or stepping method from many other martial arts into boxing cause it so useful to be able to circle your opponent. And even better unless they're highly advanced themselves they won't be able to easily figure out how you do it. It's almost as if you disappear from their vision entirely.

It only works in the corners or ropes. Boxers usually too quick to move and very hard to catch them with that type of approach. It works better in heavyweight where big boys are not that quick.

Peekaboo stance or a more squared up stance has the advantage of superior lateral ability. So you can close the distance but it must be done using angles and aggression.

You show everything! Why are you helping people... isn't it good for you and me to push them like this?! Why are you increasing your knowledge?! Looking at your views, it's not enough to make a living from this... we've only noticed that since you've been teaching, there are more and more test takers... but if you didn't talk, they would never have figured out certain steps, technical tricks on their own... why? ?? it's not good when every corner, every person hits like that...!!! You worked for it, I also worked for it, be lucky, don't teach! It's not worth it... just teach them a quarter of it, they wouldn't even see it, that's enough for them... you teach them too much... mistake... if there were only two of us, we could be more unique... so Tyson will be around every corner come face to face with us and we will become average!!! Don't wait! No one is paying us for this!!!
