@@brettsiplesdrums I bought a brand new Pearl Reference. It's a total tribute kit to Eric, 13 pieces, 8 rack toms. I expect to receive it in about another 6 weeks. I'll share the link when I receive them. Eric is the reason I started to play the drums.

Thank god I still had a lauan kit from the late 1970s lying around. Redid the bearing edges, recovered it, put on new heads and cleaned all the hardware. Now I essentially have a $1,500 kit, but with one difference, mine is actually vintage. LOL, thank you Pearl for making the dark and thuddy sound sot after. :) Seriously it sounds just like this kit but I don't worry about it being damaged at gigs or during transport and it really does work with the music I am playing now.

I've had quite a few 60's and 70's luan kits. Normally CB700's or Apollo's. I absolutely love the way they sound. That being said, these new President's are AMAZING! The quality is top notch.

@@brettsiplesdrums yeah that sound kind of went out of fashion for a while, but it’s back. That being said, the new kits get you there but are way more reliable and have much better hardware and build quality. I just happened to have that old kit lying around already stripped. The new kits inspired me to put it back on the road. Hope you enjoy that new kit!

exactly. They told us from the old days these were entry level and subpar between their snickering and now they are "classic" and warm vintage sounding. Now give us 1500 bucks. hahahaha

From what I've been told by my Pearl sales rep, the only sizes are 12/13/14/16/20/22 and the 14x5.5" snare. I was hoping for an 18" floor tom, but might rock dual 16's!

@@brettsiplesdrums If you go through Pearl’s price list on its website, you can see what is available. Personally I would like 22x14 (X2) Bass Drums, a 10x7, 12x8, and 13x9 Rack Toms. Only Rack Tom sizes available by the way. And a 14x14 and 16x16 Floor Toms. And yes, these are the only floor Tom sizes available. And to top it off, an Ian Paice Signature Snare Drum to be front and center of this kit.

How effective is the damping knob is a gimmick or can it be a replacement for moon gel in the studio or something

They definitely work, but they deaden the tone of the drum quite a bit if you really crank them.

Moongels are a gimmick. They are disgusting in high temps, and in general tend to stick to things they shouldn't stick to. They don't look good nor professional at all IMHO. Those have been in use for decades and will be far after moongels will have gone down have a weird fad. Y'all sticking fluo goo to your heads thinking it's more professional than an internal dampening system... damn. And I'm 25 years old lol I just don't get it xD

I have been doing a lot of recording and rehearsing with my Session Studio Classics so these haven't got a lot of play time. I did swap the heads for Remo USA though and that made a nice difference.
Before it was: “That low grade; cheap furniture Asian mahogany . Now it’s: The world class Philippine Luan Mahogany!
Are these heavy drums?

They're not insanely heavy. The bass drum is pretty light for a bass drum. The rack and floor toms have a good weight to them though.

@@stevekimball7697 oh nice! Congrats! Straight out of the box it sounded amazing! I did swap the heads for USA Remo black dots and a Controlled Sound X on the snare and now it's even better. Enjoy it!
Do drum manufacturers have no place to go except the past.
Sorry but I think this is a nice looking kid but it's an inexpensive luhan shells That are overpriced and overhyped
