    When I was notified by inteligent fixings that they had the upgraded version I hadn't realised it an upgrade - I thought it was a replacement, so also wider. Thanks for bringing that out on the video. Serves me right for not reading carefully enough! By the way, the £35 is less tax and shipping which brings it up to £50 for those of us who are hobbyists, which does look a little less of a bargin! Still might have to invest though as the loose tennon functionality would be very useful for what I'm doing at the moment.

    I had this crazy thought: the only connector the Peanut 2 Mini jig doesn’t do is pocket holes. Or. Does it? If you shim it on the back, so one side is higher than the other, making it sit at, say an 8 degree angle. Then you cut a mortise 90 degrees to how you would cut it for a tenon. Cut a jig to attach at 90 to the fence on the bottom that will hold the drilling guide to drill into the side of your mortise. Now you have a better pocket hole than the Kreg jig cuts for less than the expensive Castle pocket hole machine. Using a smaller guide bush makes a taller mortise w a flat side, ideal for washer-head pocket hole screws. Perhaps i haven’t explained it well, if you’re interested, I can send a drawing of how it would work.

    The changes made to the jig are excellent. And the peanut 2 short fixings look like the perfect, and only quick solution for some tricky joints I make on a regular basis. I'm going to purchase the jig as I think it's very reasonably priced, but will have to pay to have a 1/4 inch shank peanut cutter custom made (not cheap!). I still think it's a very odd choice not to produce a 1/4 inch shank cutter and IF could be losing some potential customers. Nevertheless am looking forward to testing it out. Thanks for the very informative video once again.

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

    @10MinuteWorkshop

    2 жыл бұрын

    I'd guess it's a couple of things; peanuts are a great connector, but they're ~4x the price of dominos, so as I say in the vid you could use the jig for dominos or dowels, and only buy into the peanut 2 when you needed a self-clamping connector. And I would guess that by associating themselves with the Domino, and Festool, then they may feel they gain a bit of credibility from it. But that's just me guessing! 🤷‍♂️ 👍

    Thanks for the info. I used your affiliate link when I purchased the peanut 2 👍🏻 I’m trying to dedicate one of my trend T4 routers to the peanut 2, so that it is always set up. The recessed base where the guide bush sits is quite deep, which only leaves .5 of a mm projecting into the jig aperture. Either I get a deeper guide bush or bite the bullet and consider purchasing one of these ultra fashionable battery palm routers?? Any chance you’d consider doing a video in-depth on the usual suspects?? Or perhaps you have a better suggestion? Trying to centre the guide bush with the dust collector fitted on the T4 is also very fiddly. Hence the dedicated set up. Thanks in advance.

  • @10MinuteWorkshop

    @10MinuteWorkshop

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Andrew. Sorry to hear this - though congratulations on the consistency across all ten joints! Are you using Birch ply or MDF? My first thought would be - and forgive if I’m stating the obvious - that you need to be referencing the jig off the correct face and edge ie the outside of the joint; the fence is fixed, so provided you’re doing this then there simply can’t be any variation in the jig position; if you’re referencing off the inside face of the joint though, then any variation in the material thickness with show up as a slight step in the joint. Sheet goods are only ever ‘nominally’ eg 18mm thick, and Birch ply in particular has more variation in thickness than MDF in my experience, which is why I asked. Re the third-party guide bush, provided it’s a 30mm bush with a snug fit in the jig, then that shouldn’t be an issue; if there’s any slight play in the guide bush though, then that could be where the variation is coming from. One final thought; did you centre the guide bush with a mandrel? This is an essential step, as the bushing must be centred around the bit accurately, to remove any potential variations. Let me know if any of those help, OK? Thanks, Peter

Understand completely about the excitement of the ‘shiny new thing’ - but centring the bush makes a world of difference to the peanut fitting. It was designed with chipboard in mind. Intelligent fixings have a lot of information on their website about independent load tests on the fittings in different materials - you’ll have no problem. 👍

    This seems to be a great product and I would love to buy it to be able to join mitres. I just wonder if it will work on 18mm boards (website says over 18mm). When you select the dowel inserts etc, it's also quiet expensive at €360 in Germany. I love your videos.

    Yes, the fence is reversible - one position for 16-18mm, the other for 22mm and above. Wow, that does seem pricey - is that through the German distributor? Might be cheaper to buy direct from Intelligent Fixings?

    Dictum sells it in Germany. From the UK directly is 240GBP if you add the 8mm and 10mm drill kits. In euro with VAT and import duties it will be close to €360 :-(.

    I will probably leave out the drill kits and just drill them out if I need to use bigger dowels.

    Hi Peter, do you think it would be possible to make my own modifications to my original mini jig to accommodate the loose tenon function by opening up the throat of the jig. Did look into buying modified face plate but thought £50 a bit too expensive. Thanks for the update

    Hi David. It's something I was going to ask the guys at IF about tbh - once their stock of the adapted jig bodies is gone, it'll be the only option for early adopters - but the bottom line I guess is that it should be pretty straightforward to do, but it's not something I've ever done. It's an HPL (phenolic) body, so will machine well with a router. Keep you posted on the outcome of the chat when it happens! 👍

    Totally off-topic: is this just an impression I get or does your table saw act mainly as a table and only occasionally as a saw? :-)

    @@10MinuteWorkshop The MFT & track saw combination can probably do most things a table saw is used for as easily. The only thing I can think of where the table saw may have an advantage is cutting long narrow strips.
