PB&J Micro TRD (Home Made) for Big Bluegill - MDC Pond Fishing

Спорт

In this 15 April 2024 outing, my plan was to use a Z-Man Micro TRD in PB&J. Since I had most of the other colors, but not PB&J, I used cut a Z-Man Finesse WormZ to size and made a lure that worked really well. The lure was a roughly 1.75" section of the WormZ, sliced in two for a thinner profile, and rigged weedless on a 1/20th oz Micro Finesse Jig Head.
Several bass joined in the fun as well. Some of the BG were as large as 9.5 inches.
Rudie Tootie, everyone's fave Papillon, was very helpful in the making and critique of the home made Micro TRD.
Shout out to my friend Dave R "Mr. Finesse" from Lansing KS.
Enjoy the show!

Thanks, Bill. In a few days I'll begin checking out how the big rains we are (thankfully) getting improve my mud puddles and other places. Everything should be full pool and hopefully the fish didn't drown 😂😂. Have a great week, Don

Thanks so much for your kind comments, 1sr Dumbledore. This adventure didn't show off how good the panfish are in this small body of water but after the rains of the past weeks, it is probably filled up and should be great later this year. We love fish tacos and there's nothing better than bluegill and crappie! Have a wonderful week and thanks again for stopping by. Don

Thanks, Eric! Improvisation with Elaztech usually works great. I've given my scissors a lot of work in the past but the new line of Micro Finesse lures has basically eliminated the need for scissors/super glue. Our ponds and lakes should be in good shape after the recent rains so I'll probably switch to "combo" mode and use more bass lures (as well as panfish stuff) as the season progresses. Have a wonderful week, Don

@@Winkiedoodles Yes I will agree, The elaztech as well as others have come a long way, finding them all, say in the local store is another, let alone the particular style you happen to want. I recon I'm going to have to start ordering direct from them if they'll do that. Some will only sell to distributors, or to the stores directly. Sure glad for the rain, just didn't need all the wind and lightning bolts flyin' around. Good luck on your adventures, and I'll be waiting on the videos...

@ericpierce4510 tackle warehouse.com and discount tackle.com sometimes carry quite a few Z-man baits. I still order a number of things directly from Z-man. Those guys have revolutionized the industry. The rain was plentiful but I also don't miss the high winds and the noise. Hail missed us this time!

Yes, I have been watching you long enough to remember all of your creations, trying to make the perfect bait for both panfish and bass. You did great work making them. We are in a rain cycle right now, and it will last until late today, so fishing in southeast Iowa will be affected for some time. It will take several days for the waters in our area to get back to where the fish will be biting. Have a great week.

@@dennisstewart7849 Dennis, Same rain cycle thing happening right here (Johnson County, MO). I have yet to check out the improvement - or damage - to the local mud puddles and larger lakes from the last three days of deluge rains. I'm sure it will take a while for things to settle down for several of the local faves. I've got a vid I'm working on from last Wednesday where I figured it would be a panfish fiesta.... but the place was insanely low. I managed to catch 10 decent BG, some dink bass and a channel cat...but just one tiny crappie. I'll check it out again in a month or so. All the best, Don

Yesterday I fished a micro TRD for the first time. I have not purchased any of the new ZMan Micro finesse TRDs since I already have so many of the regular TRDs. I took one of the regular TRDs (Coppertreuse color) and cut off about 1-1/2" from the tail end and fished it on a 1/32 oz Mule Fishing jig. In a little over an hour I caught 20 bluegill, 2 red ear sunfish and 5 bass. I will definitely be throwing this more often!!!!

Great comments, A&T. That's a very interesting story about creating smaller TRD mods from your supply of regular TRDs. I've also enjoyed making various types of Elaztech mods as well. It is so much fun when they work great. Catching nearly 30 panfish in about an hour is super! I have a big stockpile of ZinkerZ in lots of different colors and need to get my scissors snipping! Thanks for the idea, and have a wonderful week. Don

Eric, my friend Barry (Sparky) lives in Strafford and sent me a photo of the flood of the James River by the old launch ramp at L. Springfield. It was bad. I've also got my eye on the additional round(s) of rain due in next week. "When it rains, it pours" sounds OK except when it doesn't stop. The grass and garden veggies don't seem to mind though. 😁

Hey, Rick, howdy. We survived that multi-day round of wind and rain ok here in Holden. I drove around yesterday and it looks like the ponds and lakes are at full pool now...for the first time in years. More rain on the way, and afterwards I'll see how the fish adjusted to water levels they haven't had for a long time. Have a great week, Don

@rickbrown7067 ha, we are both waiting on environmental, scheduling and distance issues. It isn't as easy to get together since we moved here from Jefferson City and she lives there 100 MI +/- away. I'm hoping we can coordinate a trip before it gets too hot to fish. Water levels shouldn't be an issue so that's helpful. RTR!

Howdy, Eric and hope all's well with you. I certainly remember that ice breaking vid... and don't have any plans to do that again! This pond was a different place but, ironically, the video I just released was at the ice-break pond. I went there about a week too soon and it is probably at full pool now. So basically I'm waiting for the rains to subside a bit so the ponds will settle down. Have a great week, Don

Thanks for stopping by, Dave, and I'm also glad you enjoyed the show. No, There's no limit on the size of BG. When there's larger than average gills (like in this pond) I just shoot for 9" ones. In my next video I catch quite a number of 8.5" range, chunky BG. Although the pond is bigger and has a great population of BG, 9s are rare. I think the presence of water weeds has a lot to do with the food supply for BGs. Ditto for crappie. Have a blessed week on the Cape, Don
