There’s nothing more awesome to watch than live bait fishing! I caught my PB Largemouth of 8.24-8.50 LBS a month and a half ago and I think that’s your best bet to catch a fish that size if not bigger! It’s fun to watch the bluegill being chased, and the line running when a bass swallows your bait. Also, I think you should use giant golden wild shiners instead because the bass are a lot more aggressive at shiners than bluegill. Also, you can’t forgot about those spikes on the bluegill. I did catch my PB on a bluegill that was several inches long! 👍

Most good rods are way stronger than you’d expect. I charter in saltwater, and Ive seen crazy stuff, including an eight foot tiger shark on St Croix Triumph musky rod (7’ MH) with 50lb braid on an Accurate 2 speed lever drag, with a 2 foot steel leader and a flutter spoon. Palomar knots. We cut the line as soon as we saw it wasn’t a tuna or marlin (we were fishing for striper, but we knew it wasn’t that), but we fought it for about 9 minutes, and cut it loose with about 200’ of line out. Tldr: QUALITY rods are extremely strong, and will power through fish they clearly weren’t designed to catch as long as you use drag effectively.

Hook them at the top basically at the bluegills widest point. This gives the hook the most access but at the same time gives you the chance to set the hook before the hook gets in the throat of the bass. Obviously, you want to avoid that. Don't wait too long to set the hook (tops 4 seconds for big bluegills. Less for smaller). Occasionally throat hooks happens anyways and if so I just cut my line. I think the digestion system of the bass will get rid of the hook safely over time.

Use size 10 baitholder hooks with 6 inch leader. Tie leader with size 10 baitholder with no bobber or no hook in shallow water. Before you cast line with worm slap worm in the water that's on the baitholder with leader 2 to 3 times. Then cast worm in the water. Using small baitholder hooks on 6 inch leader is good. Then, get size 1 or 2 baitholder on 6 inch leader tie to main line measure 18 to 20 inches of line then put bobber 18 to 20 inches.
