At one point I had $44,000 in credit card debt. (Thanks, college) I have been credit card debt free since June 2017. I did it by going without. I drove an old 1998 Ford instead of a new car. I lived in an apartment instead of a house. I worked two jobs for a while, then worked the overtime shifts on Saturdays that no one else wanted. I paid as much as I possibly could each month, and it took years. Now I have a new car and a house, and zero credit card debt. There's no shortcut out, you just have to power through it. But it can and will happen.

I started on the debt snowball and after the first few credit cards were gone, I could really see the progress. However I had a lot of large amounts in high interest debt, where most of my lower amounts were low-interest/no interest. 55% of the money being put towards debt was getting eaten up by interest payments I shifted gears and started attacking the highest interest first (with the same motivation) and from my calculations it will save me 8 months in my debt-free journey. I still agree with dave's method for the majority of people, but once that motivation is there, I recommend highest interest first.

I think of myself as a logical person. But I know, like everyone else, I am emotional, because I am Human. The debt snowball is a great way to reduce debt. Because Dave is right, getting rid of debt is about hope and about building momentum and about reaching short term goals. Hence the success of this method.

I’m so glad my mom drilled “never borrow money” into my head when growing up. Once you’re hardwired in the brain to not have debt, you can think about debt in a more objective and unbiased perspective. And you can actually get a loan for good reasons and manage the loan well (e.g. for buying a house)

Getting one debtor after another off your back must feel great and I'm starting my snowball rolling.Thank you x I also look at things this way: the large debts I'm still winning cos I have their money and they don't have it. If I die before its paid off the debt dies with me. Win:win. Make the people who want to make most money out of you wait longest to get their money back.

Been using this approach to pay off my student loan debt, having graduated in 2017. Only one more loan to go, which I've projected I can have paid off by October at the latest (though I'm hoping I can push for September for no other reason than that I figure the sooner it's done with, the better)! And no other debts. Fortunately, I was never fooled into signing up for a credit card. And the two cars I've ever bought were both old beaters that I paid for in cash immediately. My student loan debts have been my only debt and I have to say, it'll feel _weird_ not having a hole to throw all my money into after October...

Paying the high interest rate one first can work, if you're enough of a math nerd to perceive (and hate them for) the hurt they cause on your finances and family. If you HATE it with enough of a passion, you'll attack it. But Mr. Ramsey is right, you have to be passionate and focused about it. Getting out of debt isn't just about math. It's about what psychologically is going to WORK! What is going to make you continue and want to do it and do it fast. Lets say you have a cc that is your highest interest and that it's 10k even if you pay 2,000 a month on it it's still 5 months before it's paid off. Almost half a year! Your not going to want to continue doing that! But say you start with your smaller card and your some loan or you just pay off some of the smaller payments and you start knocking out a line item every week or 2. All the sudden you FEEL like you've done something and that gives you motivation to continue. Not to mention when in 6 months you've paid off 10-12 line items and all the sudden you can attack that card at 2,500 or 3,000 a month it's gone in 3-4 months.

I have never had debt other than a few hospital bills which none were over $1,000 and together they only equate to maybe $1,000-$1,500. I don't have a credit score because I haven't done anything to build a credit history. I just made it to the 1st step and now on my way to tackling my tiny tiny debt. I tried this method years ago and it ended up backfiring for me. While paying smallest debt with double or triple payments, I was paying the largest debt with minimum payment. 6 months into this, the company with the largest debt contacted me and informed me that a minimum payment was not "satisfactory progress and considerd it a risk", and as a result they doubled the interest rate. I immediately stopped using the debt snowball and started doing 0% balance transfers for large chunks of the debt. Worked like a charm! Paid off over $28k in two years and saved $1000's in interest!
