    This isn't true though a pawn shop is not market value. The whole point of pawn shops is you get fast cash but it is less than what you would get if you sold on the market. That is why these people who go in and get mad that he offers lower than market value annoy me so much. If you wanted market value do what he always says and go to an auction. Then end up making roughly the same amount anyway after taxes and fees. You are also making them sound greedy when in fact he has been honest with sellers. Who offer something at a much lower price than what it's actually worth. And he stops them and says this is actually worth alot more

    Pawn Shops are a middle man. If you know what it's worth, sell it to a collector yourself since you have all the paperwork. Or go on Pawn Stars, get on TV showing off your verified piece, then sell it later. You know they are going to undercut the value by at least 33% so they get their margin.

    To be fair, there were a few people here who stood their ground, one even saying nah imma take my stuff elsewhere. Though from a business standpoint, I do understand the pawn workers' motto 'I take all the risk'. Yeah it's slightly condescending to say but the fact is that they are running a business. These people who latch onto the experts' appraisals and then want to immediately sell it for that price baffle me. The shop still needs to make money off the stuff so if they buy an item for its value and then sell it for that value, all they've done is waste their time.

    He is taking risk, the items could break, decrease in value, or just sit around for months to years. You’re sacrificing liquid cash for illiquid assets, although these items do have a lot of appeal but it’s not like selling stocks or something, he also has to pay for auction fees and commissions. Rick would go out of business if he offered much more than he does.

  • @GicN

    @GicN

    @@MattCurrieImprov He does not have to pay for auction fees or something like that because he just sells most items out of his shop. Also for things like breaking the item a pawn shop has usually some kind of insurance. Also a lot of people are going to see the show so if any fan of the genre sees the item he can sell it far more quickly. The most popular items were even showed at their website for a few years (that was also popular a few years ago). From what I've seen they always sell products for far more for what they say it will sell for. Making mostly double the money, which isn't bad if you buy an item of like 10k. In the end he is a smart businessman but he can't stop lowballing people sometimes.

    He is not stupid though. I do not care that him and his son low balls at times but for the most part wholesale wise, he is fare. He is not bringing the experts in to promote their business at all but he offers their promotions as a bit of a bonus they feel. Frankly Rick brings them in because it guarantees most products Rick buys, the experts come in and offers prices that they themselves would buy the items for therefore once they leave after they evaluate the cost, Rick calls these experts back up immediantly and have the majority of the items sold already to the experts immediantly without even needing to put them online or even on display in his shop. It's fast money for Rick and nothing more. The more experts Rick has the better off he is. If the experts don't want the items, he gets information to sell them on.
