If Rick just straight up read Latin into smooth english off the cuff like that, and it wasn't scripted, serious props. I get the sense he's a lot more intelligent/knowledgeable/intellectual than the show portrays

I honestly think Rick gives pretty fair prices. He tells you the retail price for the items and how much he is willing to pay. If you don’t like it then go find someone to buy it for retail. He literally gets the appraisal and has 40 employees plus is a business. He’s not saying to lowball the appraisal and then rip people off with his offers.

Not much of an investment if the value deteriorates after the "expert" handles an item without gloves. Ps. There is only one Great I Am. Pretty sure you are not Him.

While it may not happen on the show unprotected handling can have harsh effects on antiques over time.

I love how they talk about auctions, when we know, they know many people willing to buy all kinds of stuff from them privately. I would be willing to bet, they haven't put anything in an auction for years.

Rebecca looked so happy when looking at the page from the bible. She just looked like she was having a good time.

I dont really know anything about old books and I know they are the experts, but it bugs me how they treat some of them. Like, a $100k book just sitting in a shelf between other books and just a lock to protect it. I remember the first time I visited my college's library they told us they had some books that you could only read in a special room with gloves and a mask, and I'm pretty sure none of those books were "one of the few remaining books of the guy who realized how our universe works before telescopes were a thing"

If colleges treat the books as low value, students will treat it that way. An antique collector looking to buy is probably going to be more careful with the books by nature and if something happens to it by accident, the potential buyer can most likely pay that amount. Meanwhile, college students can barely afford tuition let alone thousands for a historical book. No reason to take the risk. Plus, if it makes you feel any better, I think a lot of colleges are only borrowing the books for a period of time and have to be extra careful since they don’t own them :p

its called advertising. He doesn't buy and sell these things, he is one of the "guests" on the show that is showing off his collection, getting his face and name out there. Many of the people are hired to do the show, doing educational segments, showing off cool items for entertainment. it's a reality show. He never sold those books to the pawn shop, they just did the episode, he got paid to be on the show, and he took his expensive collectable books back home with him.

Sometimes I wonder if the expert waits outside to make a bid on the item if Rick/Cory/Chumley/the old man don't buy it. In this case, Rebekah probably said no so she could buy it directly.
