I don't think most people realize how difficult to impossible it is to have 2 vocal recordings match--never mind 6. It has to be the same recording that is played at each concert.

Ehhh...maybe, but actually I always sing and play about the same as I rehearsed. Not because I'm good, but because I'm a very limited player. The more rehearsed the more it sounds exactly the same. I actually can't sing a song differently, once the muscle memory is there it always comes out the same. It's also why the beatles could sing the song the same five times over to double track the vocals before they developed the double tracking trick they used later. You could easily do this (in the video) to me and...i have literally NO reason to be using any backing track. Also, you really can't hear yourself on stage most the time, so its all muscle memory especially at a big show, its very confusing. You do it blind, basically. Some people are different, but people like Kiss definitely do the same thing I do.

@@FromTheRoomOfLittleEase sorry, but it seems you know nothing about music, singing and recording. But you just CAN‘T sing something identical two times. That is exactly why you do doublings when you record. You WANT the micro differences, because that is what lets your vocal tracks sound big.

@@lutti7238I agree with you. Not only that but unfortunately Paul hasn't sounded that clean since the first farewell tour. And it's highly documented that this is a band that recorded Kiss Alive went into the studio re recorded portions and songs and adding the crowd noise back. If they can't release a live album without re recording I sure wouldn't put it past them to use a vocal track for a guy that hasn't sounded this good live in 15 years.

I saw Kiss in Atlanta around this time. I’m a professional musician and was looking for some signs of trickery. My verdict: Paul definitely lip syncs some of the time and he definitely sings live at times also. Was I disappointed or felt robbed? No. My daughter who was 16 at the time had never seen the spectacle of a Kiss concert and she had a blast!! She didn’t know the difference and had a good time with her Dad. No harm / no foul Also: I agree he lip syncs on Psycho Circus. However, I have no doubt that Eric Singer is playing to a click track on EVERY song and every song they play is the same tempo every single night. Why? The lights, pyro, video, etc are all synced to the click track.

It's just a sign he's not capable anymore, and is still giving his current 100% which happens to be a much lower percent of 70s Paul's 100%. This is one of the various reasons why I wish the band called it quits after their initial reunion with Ace and Peter. To me, ever since then they have been tarnishing the memory of their very awesome 70s Kiss which I grew up to and holds a dear place in my memories.

“Now it’s time for me to take my place” is such a unique phrasing in this clip(s), it’s something you’d just throw out one time if you were feeling confident (“my pla-a-ace”), not every single time perfectly like that. But I’m a little confused why we’re bagging on a band like Kiss “faking it” when the whole thing was kinda built on artifice to begin with (& I like them). You also don’t want Paul to show up with his authentic hair either 😉, & you absolutely don’t wanna pay those prices for his real voice.

I am a die hard Kiss fan and I love this video. It has great evidence pointing to the fact that lip syncing/backing tracks are being used. This channel has been the one to try and do it's best to bring that to everyone's attention, even when it falls on deaf ears. What is upsetting is the utter lack of people more upset about this. 30 years ago, they took away a Grammy for lip syncing and people lost careers. 15 years ago, it just became the norm for pop singers. Now we have rock bands who play instruments who are faking it during so called "live" shows. Where does it end? I just think people should be told what they are paying for and should be warned beforehand that some "sweetening" is going on so they can make an informed decision before spending a large sum for concert tickets. Just my opinion. Well done, great job, brutha. I am glad I subscribed.

As a pro sound engineer it’s fairly common to have a backing track playing with a click track for the drummer. As the engineer you can fade in the backing track vocal and mix it with the live vocal if needed. Sometime if the vocalist is struggling, you can use 100% track vocal. Sometimes the vocalist doesn’t want any backing track vocals at all. They just sing 100% live. It just depends. Same with instruments. Extra keyboard and guitar parts are often added to the back track. It does happen and it’s common.

Even with ear protection your ability to keep time would be ridiculously impaired by all the bleed from the sound bouncing around the walls later than you're actually playing it. I was thinking the same thing at the last video of all 6, I'm a singer as well as a drummer and the drums sounded exactly the same, same nuanced hi-hat accents, everything. I honestly don't think a drummer other than a programmed one could play exactly the same every night for a whole tour. So he's either extremely disciplined or there is at LEAST a backing track for them, if not a full on drum or instrument track.

Wow! He's the most consistent singer in the history of vocalists! 😉🤫 But yeah, you can hear differences in everything else, especially the drums. In the recording studio, a great many singers double themselves to sound thicker and fuller. It's done with guitars almost all the time in every genre. The reason is because it's 100% impossible to repeat a performance exactly the same, regardless of the instrument or singer. It's the subtle differences in timing and pitch that create the thickening effect. If the vocals weren't the exact same recording every time, the combination would create that thickening effect. This is basically what the "chorus" effect is emulating. It's taking the sound going in and manipulating the pitch and timing to mimic the sound of more than one performance occurring. That effect isn't happening in these examples...because its the exact same audio just layered on top of itself. In the recording studio, we can do this to make a vocal louder...but it won't sound any fuller or thicker because the two audio tracks aren't interacting with each other. You are spot on with this video.

I just saw KISS a few nights ago in Irvine CA and I had a fourth-row seat. I was unaware that there had been a Paul Stanley lip-syncing controversy going on for years. I seriously had no idea. But right from the very first song, I knew he was lip-syncing. I mentioned it to the person I was with and after observing Paul through the second song that person agreed. Whenever Paul was at the mic singing I couldn't take my eyes off of him and I can tell you with absolute certainty that he lip-synced every song he sang that night.

I’ve heard Geddy’s voice crack or be out of pitch several times. I rather hear the mistakes than pay $200 to listen to a CD. 2 years later, they're using the same tracks. There's a video titled, "KISS 8/18/2021 Full Show Front Row Mansfield, MA "End of There Road Tour" 4K 60FPS". Psycho Circus starts at 58:04. My guess is they use tracks for the tunes that are in the higher register and are the most difficult to sing now. In the end, it really is about the entertainment. I'm glad I saw the original reunion tour in '97 with the 4 original members and all live, excellent vocal performances. It was my only KISS show and it's the only one I need. They're still the band that made me want to play way back when I was 4.

Wow, really sad if that is the case. The instruments are live for sure since they sound different in all the clips, but the singing sounds identical. What is sad is that Thayer and Singer could probably sing a few songs that Paul would usually sing to at least make it more believable. Paul wouldn't allow that just like he wouldn't invite any of the og members to play a few shows to help. Complete disgrace and a cash grab at this point. I guess this is the result of Paul destroying his vocal cords after years of singing and not preserving his voice. These dudes burn through so much money and they need to tour to make up for it. Look at guys like Hagar, they can still sing at 70+, which is because they preserved their voice. Why would Kiss even tour if they are going to use backing tracks? I see zero point and would be against it regardless if they had a disclaimer on the ticket. Way to piss away their legacy of greatness!

  • @GeeVanderplas

When you double track a vocal line (i.e. sing it twice and overlay it), no matter how close they are, the tiny differences will create a big chorus sound. If you pan the tracks left and right it will create a huge stereo sound. When you simply copy paste the same track it sounds small and center in the stereo field, which is exactly what I hear here. Clearly the exact same track. But you don't even need this to see his faking it, last time I saw him live he was out of breath and raspy in his between song banter, and then suddenly his voice is crystal clear on the songs. I've also seen enough KISS shows to know that Paul is quite sloppy live, and NEVER sings a song the same way twice. They should call it quits really, it's getting embarrassing....

I have been into Kiss since 1976 and it is so sad to see them miming (well, more specifically Paul miming). He should have called it a day some years ago and gone out with dignity. What Kiss will unfortunately be know for is being a great band but went out with a 'squib' rather than a BANG. Let's be honest, there has only ever been and only will ever be on KISS, but this kills that off. I saw them in 1980 and the last time I saw them was in 2010. I was going to see them at the o2 in London in 2019 but just didn't want to see the lip syching and I thank you for your posts because you saved me some serious money. I met KISS when they did a signing at the Virgin Megastore for Creatures of the Night (Paul, Gene, Ace and Eric), a very special moment in my life. This latest tour however it is disgraceful. It would have been better just to have meet and greets because basically this is all the latest shows have become 'Come and see KISS arrive at a venue.......that's enough isn't it?). They were a great band, their albums are wonderful, but paying money just to SEE them in person is not enough.

And yet, the blind followers are following the marching orders like good little boys & girls.... sad. “I have a problem when you charge $100.00 to see a live show and the artist uses backing tracks. It should be on every ticket. You’re paying $100.00… and they’ll sing sometimes, sometimes they’ll lip sync. At least be honest. It’s not about backing tracks, it’s about dishonesty.” -- Gene Simmons, March 2015 The PERFECTION of HYPOCRISY.

777zippy777 I appreciate everything you stated including Simmons’ quote. I’m not arguing with you but find it humorous that even when they go against their own statements, they’re making a sh*t ton of money! It seems they can’t lose, how does that happen? I saw them last in 2014, driving 5 hours so my son could see them. I honestly said that was my last show. Paul’s voice was on the down turn and the show had become so predictable. Heck, I barely even listen to their music now! My wife heard about this tour and asked if I was gona go. I said, “prolly not, but I’d consider it if they came here”. What do they do? Come to my home town! They haven’t been here since 98 or 99! So I told my wife, “dammit, they’re coming to town”! Then my wife says, “you should invite your brothers since they took you to your first KISS show”. SHE CAN’T STAND KISS! How the hell did KISS get in her head to say that? Ugh, they got me! So I buy three of the nosebleed seats for $100 and after all the “Convenience Fees”, I dropped $455! I took it from every angle didn’t I! So yes, as much as I don’t want to admit it, I kinda became one of those “vapid fans”! Feel free to judge me! On a side note, look at 2019’s top 25 concert tours, I’m not a music expert but I count maybe six artists that have been around less than 10 years with the likes of a Elton John, Cher, Metallica, Aerosmith, Bob Seger..yes even him, included in this list! Add in the latest hair band tours announced recently, It seems to me that concert goers have a lot of nostalgia in their minds. Maybe there’s something to that, not just KISS fans being off their rocker?!

@@MrAdrianarellano1 Yes, KISS is making a shit-ton of money... and they deserve all of it for no other reason than for creating something from nothing and making it into a band/brand that has lasted for almost a half-century. Good for them. They earned it. For me, it's the hypocrisy coming from Gene and Paul. And their constant rewriting of KISStory regarding Ace & Peter-- facts be damned. And their blatant narcissism and hypocrisy. How sad is it that they slammed other artists for not being honest about backing tracks and lip-syncing... and then they won't even be honest about Paul's obvious lip-syncing? How sad is it that they constantly slammed Ace and Peter for being "subpar"... but yet, Paul hasn't been able to sing well for YEARS now? I would never tell a KISS fan to not pay to see KISS... but me, I just can't support them anymore. I have a thing about liars, phonies, narcissists, hypocrites and back-stabbers. Not a big fan of those kinds of people. And that's Gene and Paul in a nutshell.

I agree. No way in hell they use omni-directional mic’s live. It would be way too difficult to control feedback and bleedover. Another way to tell this is a pre-recorded vocal is that the echoes are exactly on the same time.

  • @m2svirtual384

Do you have a favorite movie that you've watched more than once? Do we insist that movies be acted out in real time for each audience? No. We agree that recorded performances can be enjoyed more than once. No verbiage on your concert ticket suggests a guarantee that every aspect of the performance will be live in real time. Many bands trigger MIDI parts and background vocals with pads etc. What really is the difference?? KISS is an experience. They are performers that are a small percentage 'live vocals'. Light show, fireworks, makeup, choreography... there's so much more there that is still worth the ticket price. If you are going to insist that Paul sing every song live and in real time, well then don't buy a ticket and stay tf home. I'd rather hear parts, that are challenging to someone his age to sing, be triggered and lip-synced than to hear something grossly out of key and mangled (yet I still might desire to see the rest of the 'KISS spectacle'). Maybe you deserve $1 back on your ticket because Paul didn't sing some or all of his parts directly into a live mic. I know I surely wouldn't care. I also know I surely wouldn't spend 1 minute doing some complete BS 'investigation' over it. LMAO you really need to get a life... and while you're at it, show us what talent you actually have that doesn't include being some sort of KZread professional KISS fan/critic. My opinion of Paul Stanley over the years of interviews and media is, he's a complete douche. But you have come off as a douche nozzle. You absolutely own every hour you wasted doing some CSI investigation. Oh, and also, take down all of your videos. You are now only allowed to livestream each topic, hypocrite.

Easiest ways to verify lip singing 1. Lips move off of track (not seen here) so he's good. 2. First word of each sentence is either same tone or has the exact pronunciation and there is a line he says "And Its" and that sound exactly the same. And others do too 3. Do what you did case closed. Wow Some comments though here that don't prove, you can sing a song in the identical note/key many times especially if you are a tight band, now Kiss is playing 50 years so. But you would not breath and have the exact timing like they did here... this isn't even a backing track, I think the whole band is recorded 😮. A+ here.

Great job investigating. I get it, and I'm cool with it. That show is so much fun, it didn't really bother me. Paul isn't the Paul of the REVENGE era. This comes with time. It's a natural part of getting older. I'm not going to bash him, because I couldn't do at 22, what he does now, or what he did when he was 42, LOL. Great job for putting in all this work. Your videos always dive deep, and that's what makes them so good. Lip Synching or not, I may have to say that the END OF THE ROAD show is my favorite KISS show of all time (Granted I never saw any 70's shows, and my one Reunion Show was in the nose bleeds), but THE END OF THE ROAD is simply, a 100% FUN KISS show (aside from lineup, debate etc...) PURE FUN. Thanks for taking the time to create this and share this. Have a good week.

I totally agree with you. This was the 7th time I've seen Kiss. The second with this line up and this was, BY FAR,the best KISS show I've ever attended. Every Song had some sort of pyro, lighting effect specific for that song or thematic part to it. Incredible concert,HUGE production and got our money's worth and then some. People saying that they feel cheated clearly have the wrong outlook. Because at the end of the day the show still rocked and was incredible and certainly gave your money's worth. Paul's voice isn't half of what it once was and it's not going to be. The fact that the guys are out there doing a two hour plus show and no stopping just pure performance. I was in awe on how they pushed the pace and didn't slow down, they just kept kicking ass. To put aside all of the positive and exciting aspects of the show to denouncing it because Paul uses a vocal track at nearly 70's years old speaks for that person's pessimistic outlook and nothing more. Father time always wins and rather nitpick and down things I'd rather be happy I got to see them one final time and was able to see them for the first time on this tour with my son, wife and my niece and her husband(all of which whom never seen the Legend that is KISS)and had a time we all will never forget!
