This is the best song he's ever written. You can't even follow it, if you're used to being in a key. At the intro, a couple measures don't even tell you where you'll start at the first verse. Then, he goes off in a totally different key with the strings and flute before returning to the original key. But, if you're used to a standard dominant-to-tonic cadence, it ain't there. This song was really thought about a long time. This wasn't thrown together quickly. It's brilliant. I don't even like Paul Simon, typically, but this is one of my favorite songs. It's a masterpiece.

The sheer transformative nature of this song is astonishingly unbelievable. The production had to master and correlate with the intensely personal feel of the lyrics. A masterpiece with e ery note placed in as delicately as a newborn in a bassinet. It moves the heart whilst you feel you need to be still as death itself so as not to miss a moment.

The harmonic and overall intelligent content of this tune is at a super high level, especially for a pop song, and especially compared to what's out there now. As you allude to, coming out of the bridge with the strings, flute and then that perfect, soulful sax (Michael Brecker, RIP), the song takes you to another level. I'm glad you liked it so much.

“American Tune” has had greater resonance, for me, since 9/11/01. With tragedy and bad times,…you still need to carry on. America is not perfect, yet we are better at times than others. When I saw Simon & Garfunkel, Live, in autumn of 2003, Chicago, they did “American Tune” as part of their set. Silent reverence for Garfunkel, during “Bridge”. And, singing with the Everly Brothers! “American Tune”…honest critique

This Paul Simon fellow really is a genius and certainly knows how to share his emotions by writing songs we can all relate to. This song was very bluesy. It is this slow bluesy tempo that makes us feel the music. The slow speed gives us time to feel. It's true what you say that we musicians and music lovers are not like the rest. In a sea of three chord wonders, with loud screaming and fast fingers and all the trivial sensationalism, Paul Simon is the rescue ship with musical champagne and 4 different keys and jazz chords including fully diminished chords, unashamed to use a slow tempo and get a REAL message across about the human condition with well written music and lyrics that still has a hook. Many of today's listeners won't listen to this because the have been weened on musical garbage that speaks of the superficial that hides behind computerized sound effects that passes for music. Occasionally there is a real writer and musician that shines through the fake stuff.

Great song and award winning album. So many fantastic tunes on this album.
This is a song for anyone who has crossed 50 years and looking back on the errors and follies of youth and then gazing ahead at what could yet be if there's just a little more time to spare. It's wistful nostalgia and hopes of redemption and acceptance of the Big Inevitable.
The song still moves me as much (if not more) than when I first heard it.
Great song! Great reaction! I love Paul Simon songs, and I love that Dashiki.
Fender Rhodes ... perfect on this song.....
Loved your reaction to this. It's a beautiful song.
You would love Paul Simon's "Late in the Evening". Up-tempo with Latin percussion and horns!
I know exactly how you feel. I remember hearing this song when it first came out loved it then and I love it now. My favorite Paul Simon song of all time; pure perfection ❤🎵
Love this song! Thanks, Harri. 🙂
My song. I just got crazier. I had this album, played it to death. Great time to be young Harri.
YES this is a incredibly fantastic song.
Great Reaction Harri, My favorite Paul Simon song. I fear I might do some damage one fine day, but I would not be convicted by a jury of my peers. Great Words. Am I crazy or did I hear you say my Dad Paul McCartney.

Gary, after following Harri's reactions for a while, Harri is a huge fan of Paul McCartney. I think Harri has another Paul named Simon to be a fan of. He was already, this just solidified it. 😀 Thanks for stopping by!
Great request Imadrummin! So many of these wonderful songs slip from our memories and it’s nice for someone to remind us. Thanks Harri🌺✌️

Debbie, my pleasure. Your pick of El Condor Pasa earlier this month was brilliant. I have listened to it several times since you brought it back to us. Still Crazy is yet another gift brought to us by the great Paul Simon. 💖💝✌
This whole album is fire. Still Crazy, 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, My Little Town, I Do It for Your Love, ... No weak tracks at all.
The best version of this song is the one Paul did on Saturday Night Live while dressed in a chicken costume. It was fantastic and hysterical all at the same time!!

Harri: Never lose your enthusiasm, man. Love the reaction 💯
Such an incredible song---now THIS is songwriting! Just listen to the chord progressions, you don't hear anything like that today on the radio. And what a melody, with the chords following the vocal melody, or is the other way around? What a great composition, and great instrumental arrangement
If you haven't, "Loves Me Like A Rock" and Kodachrome" are a must to check out! Also with July 4th coming up, "American Tune" is a good one!
Michael Brecker played the sax on this song and album. He also did so on Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run LP and a few Billy Joel albums, among many other iconic works.
The way this song resonated with you is a thing of beauty. Thank you.
Great song! Paul Simon is a great singer songwriter. After his success with Simon & Garfunkel in the 60's, Paul Simon went solo in 1970. He has a huge library of songs such as "Mother & Child Reunion", "Gone At Last", "My Little Town", "Loves Me Like A Rock", "Slip Slidin' Away", "You Can Call Me Al", "Graceland" etc.

I wanna add AMERICAN TUNE, which is based on Bach and contains his best (IMO) guitar work ever. Such great lyrics to AT; it usually makes my cry.

Great reaction to a great song Harri, glad you enjoyed it so much. When I look at how much the world has changed in my lifetime, I sometimes feel like I am Still Crazy After All These Years.
I can’t over emphasize! What an amazing song! I remember when this was released. I wish I could give this 100 likes!
What a great tune!! Great suggestion. Great reaction.
Monumental album from one of the greatest songwriters of pop music ever. Interesting first track off that album. The band backing him up is the house band from Muscle Shoals (Aretha's classics were recorded there). Barry Beckett is on Fender Rhodes, Harri. David Hood is on bass. Roger Hawkins is the drummer. Michael Brecker was on alto sax. BTW, Ray Charles does an incredible cover of this, Harri. Thanks Imadrummin. Nice.
I got the whole fantastic, awesome album once, so long ago !! One of the best, drums the great Steve Gadd BTW.
Love to hear you react to Paul Simon and Phoebe Snow Gone At Last
Still have my album from the 70s. I think this was his best although Graceland is a close second. Thanks Imadrummin for bringing it to Harri’s attention. He sure seemed to like it. 😊. Thanks Harri for the great reaction. 👏👏🇨🇦

You might want to hear America Overs Old Friends from S&G's BOOKENDS album (1968) Paul Simon, by no fault of his own, is simply... musical
I love this song and the entire album!! Seems like only a few years ago, I would sneak into my brother's room and play his albums. This was always on deck. Somehow, he always knew I'd been in his room. Go figure. Haha...
Love this song!
It feels like half a lifetime since I've heard this song. This used to be very very popular. Everyone could sing along.
I always wonder what Artie might have added to the vocals on this one. Probably to most "Simon & Garfunkle" sounding of Paul's great solo catalog. Thanks Harri, you're the Best. (Next to Georgie of course!}

I ain't no fool for love songs that whisper in my ears....! I am glad to see you've discovered the genius of Paul Simon.
This has been a favorite of mine for many years
I love you and this song
The sax solo here gets me everytime regardless if it's this version or a live one. The entire album is probalbly Paul Simon's most jazz influenced ever and the solo is played by Michael Brecker (r.i.p.) on the greatest to ever play a horn!

Mm, same icon who did the "Auld Lang Syne" section on the end of Dan Fogelberg's "Same Old Lang Syne". Jazz players turn up everywhere, stealthily, hugely influential...
so good that it hurts a bit.......
Paul did a few really nice songs that I always felt were essentially jazz ballads, like this one. Another great one that will make your ears tingle is "Something So Right". He could write such great songs in an amazing number of different styles! Enjoyed your reaction to this one. 😊

@@scottgallaway8089 I don't think I can pick one greatest song ever, but I sure wouldn't argue with your opinion on this one!
Awesome reaction. I need to crack out my old CD of this (and get a CD player too.) Btw- you might like the video of Paul Simon doing about half of Still Crazy on the Dick Cavett show. He is noodling through the half unfinished song on his guitar while bantering with Dick Cavett. You can tell it will be a gem. (Cavettbiter channel). Also- KZread phenom Josh Turner does a great acoustic cover of this song.
You make me smile
The entire catalogs of Simon & Garfunkel and Paul Simon are eternal classics. Listen to it all.
Good choice Harri! Try paranoia blues. A Paul Simon song of the dangers of ordering Chinese food in New York!
I love the Small Pieman!❤
I had totally forgotten about this diamond...
I love how much you enjoy your job Harri!
I' gave you a like and another like in the comments
Harri, your reaction brought a huge smile to my face! Cheers man!
Your reaction was as beautiful as the music you reacted to. Not long ago I heard this track and my reaction was similar to yours. I thought: christ sake what a gem of a song. For us music means more.
Finest song, great song, thanks my dear friend :D
Great song and to top it off, the legend Michael Brecker on that sax solo . And 100% agree about the Fender Rhodes.
Nice memory 😇🤩🥰 Love, loved the song 💯❤ Havent heard for years 🤔😊Thank you Imadrummin 🤩😇 and Thank you Harri

Much appreciated Agnete. Paul Simon's gift to all of us. 👍
I just absolutely adore Paul Simon’s music. Please give a listen to his song One Trick Pony. It’s a song from a movie he was in 1980 of the same name. It’s actually a very good film. Highly recommended it.
I am 82 and this is my song ❤️
PLEASE, Harri..Try "Something So Right" and/or " American Tune"...more Paul Simon...
Ray Charles does a cover of this song that is Big Soul Amazing.
Thanks for the tunes... I'm 99% sure that Willy Nelson (Maybe "Willy and Waylon") had this song on vinyl...
you should cover, It's great to see you inspired by this.
This is a nice one.
You should listen to "I do it for your love", from the same album. Also a masterpiece if you ask me.
Harri, you like Karen Carpenter (as do I); you might be interested to know that she covered this song on her 1979-80 solo recording...
😊😊😊 Amazing reaction!!!
Just slip out the back Jack!
