Much respect to Paul for the Steve Gadd shout out. One of the top beats of all time.

Exactly...and of course Howard's not aware of him up until that shout out..Steve Gadd IS New York.! Ya can't miss him if you were a fan of music in the 70's..

i love paul but i don't respect it - gadd has no writing credit on the song so he doesn't get royalties on "one of the most sampled drum parts"

Session musicians don't get writing credits
50 Ways is one of the best songs ever written. So unique, so smart. Somehow it seems so obvious, but if you gave me 50 million years, I couldn't have written it. Unlike almost all people called "musical genius", Paul is the real deal.

Love the mention of Steve Gadd. One of the greatest drummers of all time.
One of the great songs of all time
When the musician (in this case drummer) adds something to a song (someone else wrote) that becomes an iconic part of how that song is heard and experienced by the public. This is a good example.
Paul teaching Howard about Steve Gadd is awesome.
You have to hand it to Stern and his crew. I’ve listened to several shorts from this interview and the number of samples they had at-the-ready to “illustrate” the part of a song Paul Simon was speaking about was impressive. Especially being able to find that specific sample and play it when needed.

Stern also has very, very good sound technicians and mixes for musical performances. It must be a steady, well paying job in that field.
Steve Gadd soooo good on Aja by Steely Dan

One of the greatest session drummers ever. Russ Kunkle's awesome too.
To have this level of talent. I’m always in awe.
It's my favourite groove of all time. Written and performed by my favourite drummer of all time. I'd recommend all drummers learn it. It unlocks a whole bunch of cool ideas.
In my top ten (maybe even top five) of Simon compositions. Paul Simon is monumental.
Thank you for recognizing the great Steve Gadd for his iconic riff. The song was already great but his back beat lifted it into the stratosphere.
Love his self grown guitar picks :)

Recall reading of the rivalry in the classical guitar world and flamenco between those that used finger nails versus fingertips. Sharp against a softer sound.
Any chance we get the whole interview? I’m a huge fan of Paul Simon!

Steve Gadd... perfection.
Simon is a great, underrated, acoustic guitarist.
Had the pleasure of seeing him at a small venue in Chicago after his big show sold out.
Definitely top ten most important drum grooves it all time.

That's highly subjective there's so many great drum tracks - Paul has another one the obvious child that's amazing 😍
50 ways to leave your lover was the inspiration to a few of my breakups
Stuck in boarding school wearing uniform Terylene grey trousers with the backside shined glossy by the wooden desk seats, listening on a tiny shirt pocket sized Grundig 9 volt transistor, I thought Paul was singing "You don't need to be corduroyed." I thought "Please God, yes I do!"
A most delicious song! ❤
50 ways to leave your lover is a perfect song
Great artist
Those are great chords, obviously baroque.
one of the first 45's i brought. happen to at wainrites about 2 blocks from simons childhood home
I want to see the rest of that interview
Amazing
I loved Steve Gadd drumming on the One Trick Pony album 👏🥁
Credit where it is due, always. (And Paul resembles another Paul--Picasso--with every passing year!). 😊😊
Steve Gadd is great, a huge inspiration to another great drummer Gavin Harrison!
Happy to hear Robyn. Love her.

Triple union scale used to be nicknamed "Steve Gadd money"
I was wondering why his guitar sounded so great. Then I saw five built in guitar picks on the tips of his fingers.
Big jazz drummer that's how he is underrated.
The chords in the verse of 50 ways seems similar to Just the 2 of us by grover washington jr.
Remember Howard fantasy about the Olson twins when they were underage?

Bob Dylan or Paul Simon? I'd say more would say Paul Simon. Now Paul Simon or Paul McCartney? That'd be interesting as a poll........
@andyscott5277

That’s a tough one. Lyrically I’d give it to Dylan, but musically to Simon. McCartney inches ahead musically, but would put Simon ahead lyrically. Hard call on all, though, these are the greats.
Steve Gadd’s drum part IS the crux of the song IMO
I came here to see him play that specific chord

Still can't believe Lennon referred to Paul Simon as "the singing dwarf". Seems harsh.
Steve Gadd is the GOAT.
I'm a Super tall handsome Retired Saudi basketball player 🏀 🇸🇦 and I don't have kids because everybody is in my business.
Well, I was folding my underwear and a song fell out that earned me millions of dollars. It's a curse.
I find his songs really hard to play. Sounds simple turns out not.
No doubt Paul wrote a lot of great songs!......This isn't one of them!
Howard is worried about what his fans will do to his body once he passes. 😂

I would love to know how the guests that go into the studio really feel about going there when the host doesn’t even bother to come in. Or that he comes in for certain guests but not others. He could come in for Demi lovato but not Paul Simon?
