LOL Who else but Paul would answer his critics about him writing too many love songs by writing a song about love songs.

This was a huge hit, which must have given Paul immense satisfaction given he wrote it as a tongue-in-cheek riposte to snobbish critics (including a certain Mr Lennon) who complained that he only wrote lightweight love songs 😉

Paul McCartney is recognized as one of the finest bass players in the history of rock and roll -- and yet somehow he's terribly underrated as a bass player. You never hear enough people recognizing how amazing he is on that instrument specifically. He could do things like this song, where he basically played the bass as the lead instrument yet never stopped serving the song. It just leads the way on the musical journey. (I'll also say that if you listen to Band On The Run you will NOT be disappointed)

  • @TheReaperMan275

For the life of me, I can't fathom how Paul McCartney was able to sing over *that* bass line! The vocal and bass lines are so different from one another, you almost have to have two brains concentrating on two different things. The answer of course is a tremendous amount of talent and practice, practice, practice, until the bass line becomes muscle memory and you can fully concentrate on the vocals. I give you Sir Paul McCartney, folks. Appreciate him while he is still with us.

Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five is a much underrated deep track. It should’ve been a hit. Other great songs seldom discussed: Hi Hi Hi, My Brave Face, Another Day, and Maybe I’m Amazed. (That last one was a big hit, but still not as well remembered as it deserves to be).

There are so many gems to choose from but "Maybe I'm Amazed" is an incredible masterpiece declaring his love for Linda whom he credits with saving his life when The Beatles were no more. Of course "My Love" is another under rated work of true art expressing the depth of his love oh so wonderfully.

"Silly Love Songs" was a gigantic hit back when, quickly topping the charts to become the song of 1976. I heard it on the radio so often back then that merely reading the name can start the song playing in my head even now 45 years later -- that bass line, the melody, those harmonies, the horn riffs, the disco string arrangements. The first vinyl album I bought when I got a few years older was Wing's Greatest Hits, in part because of this song, as well as the others like "Band on the Run", "Live and Let Die", etc.

Listen to what the Man Says is, once again, pure genius. Just a wonderful, wonderful song. Paul is THE MAN. His melodies, lyrics and pleasure are unbelievably infectious works of a true master of music and lover of love. Let Em In is another wonderful piece of art that expresses his love of family and family get togethers. Can you imagine how fun it must have been to celebrate Christmas with the McCartneys ... He's a genius, a true romantic and truly loves his fans. Later songs like "New," "Fine Line," "Young Boy," "Fuh You" and many others are just amazing. He's much more than a great writer, performer, etc. ... He's magical and a truly decent guy and great father. I have loved Paul for all of my 60 years ... Even before I could walk or talk. That's why when I suggest a song for them to react to, I tell them to play the original studio release. That way they get the real feel of the track. In the early '80s, there was a restaurant called "Mug & Muffin" right in the middle of Harvard Square. It has since been replaced by a bank, sadly. But in the Mug & Muffin restroom were some apparently memorable graffiti in one of the stalls which asked the question: Q. When did Paul McCartney write Silly Love Loves? A. 1961-1981. I think people beat him up because he survived, and John didn't. As a fellow Southpaw, I have a soft spot for Paul, who was and is a great human being and artist. Great review, thank you. All the best to you, and the continuation of this important and delightful channel.

McCartney was a hit factory for sure. His Wings stuff was great. It wasn’t a lot of pointed socio-political commentary, and it wasn’t deeply cynical stuff like Lennon was making in the early part of the 70’s, but Lennon ended his career with a couple silly love songs; Woman and Starting Over. Another great PM & Wings song you should cover is Arrow Through Me… a gem!

Hey bro loved this reaction and to me this is genius. And it all started a few years after the Beatles split up and John Lennon was criticising Paul McCartney for writing too many silly love songs. So PMC is like ok I’ve got a title for a song and I’ll put a love song in it!! And it was a huge hit for him and his new band Wings. And you’re right the bass is sublime (PMC was the bass player, he’s maybe overlooked in that area) and the rest of the the musical arrangement too is sublime. I think the Beatles producer George Martin continued to work with Paul post-Beatles and he was a classically trained composer before he ever worked with them, and those strings would have been a proper orchestra, no synths or digital tricks available back then. And the female vocals on this were Paul’s first wife Linda an American photographer and musician, his wife from 1969-1998 until her passing away from cancer. The perfect pop song really, glad you enjoyed 😊🇬🇧🇺🇸

Yeah!! Loved this 🖕 you to Lennon's statement about Paul Doing Nothing but Soft Lil Love songs all the time! That's because Lennon's Relationship with Yoko was a Bit ROCKY at That time! But yeah, if That's Paul on the Bass, then He was Cuttin up!!🎶

Checkout some of their live performances. His band was flawless. Kind of like Elvis’ band, who were flawless as well. When you’re that big of course you’ll attract the best of the best. Paul didn’t need a bassist or pianist for recording of course. 😂

GREAT TUNE!! I remember seeing him perform it on TV around the same time NYC had the electric go down and nobody had power. Your "strike" situation MIGHT be because you don't stop and comment during the song and I have heard that is what the BIG BADS don't like. 👍✌✌🖖🖖🖖

...well: Paul McCartney IS a bass player, so....! [ 😜😜😛👍👍] (A multi-instrumentalist, really ...he DOES seem to "play everything" -over his lifetime, I mean. - ...Regardless: man's a musical genius.)

I agree. Love Paul, hate this song. (and not because it's sentimental, it's just lame!). Seems to be a lot of love for it, tho. P.S. I like your "name", Chauncey, great movie!
