    Oh no!! I’m so pleased and literally screamed when I found this video. As a one of amateur baker in Japan, who has been obsessively watching British bake off over and over again, just so glad you visited to us! It is also great to know that the classic bread and pastries from other countries we see and eat on a regular basis is comparable to the original one. We always welcome you again. With lots of respect from Japan!

    I absolutely loved watching you in the bakery. I lived in Japan from 1984-86 and bakeries were abundant in Akasaka area where we lived. I wasn't a fan of the bean paste but had so many treats for our meals and the breads were delicious. The Japanese are perfectionists and everything was just delicious and well presented. Thanks for your Vlogs. I enjoy so much.

    It’s ridiculous to believe that no one else in the world would eat bread. All cultures travel, learn and bring ideas home from other countries. They’ve been doing that for 1000s of years. Where do think we ever got the idea to eat rice.

    Young people are often narrow minded and he did say he thought this at academy. He obviously doesn’t still think Japan has no bread otherwise he wouldn’t have traveled to Japan for his show. The internet would have still been in its infancy (for general use and knowledge gain) and people in the 90’s were not exposed to the changes in cultures around the world as they are now, unless they managed to catch a documentary perhaps on a PBS type station. Also, 20+ years ago the population of Japan would have been more old school and still had rice as their bulk preference. I read that bread has gained considerably in popularity over just the last several decades in Japan, and only in the 2010’s has bread gained equal popularity with rice. The ridiculous thing isn’t that he thought that there was no bread in Japan, but that he didn’t jump at the chance to go to Japan for that job, lol. He probably would have learned a lot and had a great experience. I love anpan.

    All that you said is true. It is also true that in general, the further east you go, the less bread and the more rice they eat. Bread really wasn’t a thing in Japan until the Portuguese brought it over in the mid 1500s, and in the grand scale of things, that is rather recent.

    It really was not really a choice of but necessity of enough supply to feed the masses. Japanese were very closed off and could not depend on trade due to ego/pride or some delusional moral authority so it could not rely on domestic grain’s production for much of its history.

    I doubt Paul will see my comment, but I would like to share with him that Costa Rica is desperately in need for him to visit here. The bread here is also called, "pan" but it's nothing like the yeast bread we know. Which, by the way I have been making my own for years. It's dificult to find different types of flour here, so I use the most common all purpose flour. So, Paul... if you see this comment and decide to venture here... Please bring some dark flour, malt vinegar (mainly for chips) and someone to open a decent Pub!!! 💕

    Have they done a Japan Week on British Bake Off? If not, they should do anpan or melon bread as the technical challenge.

  • @JustAnotherPerson4U

    @JustAnotherPerson4U

    They did do a japanese week. But uh, it was criticised because in some of the challenges like the steamed buns signature the bakers chose either western ingredients like burger steamed buns or chinese ingredients. Melon bread sounds doable as a technical challenge but I think Paul has to make a recipe for it himself and see if it's possible in the time allocated for the bakers. The anpan sounds like it'd take too long to make based on the fact that it needs 60 hours to make.

    The people commenting here don't think that the British are a nation of only polite gentlemen in silk hats or James Bond, and they know that they eat more than tea and scones. But the British seem to think of Japan as a country full of ninjas and samurai who eat nothing but rice and noodles, and they don't seem to have the education to know that Japan is a gastronomic country with top-class cuisine from all over the world.

    Ohh, Japan has a very varied diet. And many Asian bakeries are fantastic, even in the U.S. The cakes and pastries tend to be very light. Most Japanese supermarkets have wonderful breads with things like cream, chocolate or, for a more traditional Japanese taste (as Paul saw) An-pan. An pans are very popular there. In the U.S. in Japanese shops like Marukai, Toyko Central and even Daiso, you can find delicious bread snacks. OMG jealous!! FRESH baked an-pan!!

    Whats amazing about Japan is it still has a thriving craftmans industry from pottery to baking, however, it still has diminished in the last few decades. In the UK and US, it was effectively eliminated from the 70s to the 00s but is making a comback but at super premium prices to the dismay of normal people. I like anpan or sweet bean break, good for breakfast for a big kick of protein to fill you up a bit from the mash azuki beans. My favorite are melon pan or melon bread. Best comparison is its like a bread like a concha and it has a thin cookie crumble layer on top, its not overly sweet at all like much of japanese sweets. No melon in it what so ever.

    I lived in Hawaii and found this Japanese bakery inside of Shakira's Dept. Store. They made the BEST pastries I have ever had. This is where I discovered Tiramisu and fell in love with it. Now, dummy me, had never heard of Tiramisu before, so I assumed it was Japanese, right? Hahahahahaha Many years later when I returned to the Mainland, I found out it was Italian. To this day, that was the best Tiramisu I ever had, bar none. One of my favorites at that bakery was the Anpan filled with red bean.

    There's a chain of Taiwanese bakeries around here, which have some really fantastic breads - many of them buns with a filling in them, like he was having there. My favorite bread that they carry is their Japanese Shokupan, which is so nice and light and springy... mmm, it is just amazing. I really need to make a batch of it for myself, the main challenge there is that my oven is struggling so badly these days. Still, we've got a new oven ready to put in, we just... need to re-do the gas and electricity to where the oven goes... yay...
