Hey kids! Its a brand new installment of Weekend Wankshop with your good buddy, Uncle Ben Eller!
Ever wondered how Paul Gilbert plays so clean and fast?! The secret is, its not ALWAYS his alternate picking powers you're hearing... its his brilliant combination of lightning fast picking combined with strategically-placed legato for a shred bonanza!! And you're about to learn exactly how he does it!
This lick uses his signature trick combined with the A minor scale; it starts off across the bottom two strings (ala Technical Difficulties by Racer X), then ascends up a big 3 note per string scale pattern. Its surprisingly easy and sounds SICK!
In this lesson, you're gonna learn the secret sequence he uses a lot, a super cool lick to help you practice it, plus all the Troy Grady/Cracking the Code downward and upward pick slanting benefits you're gonna practice as you learn it, plus a bunch of other tips and tricks to help you shred HARD today!
Playing my Suhr Modern Satin into the Fractal Axe FX III. Lovely rig.
Thanks for watching! Who else has shred secrets you wanna know about next? Let me know in the comments!

Uncle Ben... you're not the hero we need... you're the hero we deserve.
On top of his killer playing, Paul also seems like a super cool and well-grounded dude. Thanks for the lesson!
Are you having "Technical Difficulties"?!?
Anyone can play like Paul Gilbert. First, you just have to be Paul Gilbert.

I took three private lessons from Paul before he was famous. Early 1980's Emulating him too much might cause unnecessary anxiety. His pinky is about as long as my index finger. He also seems to have alien biomechanics allowing his fingers to just move beyond the speed of light with perfect accuracy. Watching him play up close feels like entering an alternate reality.
Ben, wanna know just how good you and your channel is? I haven’t picked up a guitar in years with no intention of restarting. Yet I watch all of your episodes. And there you are.

U dont need big hands at all. Hes not ever stretch in 99 percent of what he does.. guitars are built for normal people.. if big hands mattered at all u could simply play a smaller guitar.. slit of people think long fingers are a necessity.. nobodys doing alot of crazy reaching.

Uncle Ben. Thank you... I applied your economy picking exercise to a major scale pattern I have been teaching my oldest son, and I found I do some upslant picking. Turned this into that sweet 4 note ascending scale pattern we all love but I could never do it before at metal speed. It’s been 22 years since I started playing. Awesome. 👏
Watchin uncle ben is like eating healthy and gettin a tasty snack. Nutritious knowledge, and tasty tunes.
”No joyriding” 😂 I really liked that.
Uncle Ben the man with a great sense of humour and great teaching skills. Thanks Ben been watching you for years now and love all the quality content you provide!
Excellent lesson!
Thanks for learning us uncle Ben!
Nice lesson Ben! Thanks!
Very nice. Thanks for the lesson!
Great stuff, as usual, Uncle Ben. The pick end position, along with the muted rhythm demo, were my golden nuggets out of this one. Thanks a bunch!
Thanks Ben you rock!
This is a awesome technic to play lines fast with groove. It doesnt sounds as boring as just picking every note . Thank you for that Ben.
Step one: have a 7” pinky.

@@johnadams2063 Fucking hell..some people think every comment on the internet is serious. IT WAS A JOKE!!! That little South Korean girl could shred Govan when she was like 9 or something...so yeah, it's more about application and talent than physical limitations. Although my crooked pinky fingers present actual physical issues when playing...there are also advantages to them...
Thanks uncle Ben 🙏
great lesson!!
Thanks🎉. Can't wait to try it out!
Your lessons are just great!
Awesome video thanks!
Thanks for the guidance!
Ben Eller is a great instructor. I love the easy to understand discretion of each technique used that he demonstrates. Thanks Ben.
Ben... great video. Always a pleasure, never a chore to watch.
Met Paul Gilbert a few times many years ago when I was a student at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, and when I was a Luthier apprentice at Carruthers Guitars in Venice CA. Really nice guy.
Thanks Uncle Ben!!!
Great stuff Unca Ben... been taking lessons from Paul for 2 1/2 years...this lesson was instantly recognizable....and spot on man! Finally got to meet him this summer at a meet n greet. His show got cancelled, but his crew contacted all the VIP folks and they met us at his hotel suite for a 2 hour storytelling/playing show. Just a super swell cat that loves to tell stories, chat and play.
Good stuff Ben Thank you
The end of Technical Difficulties is the ultimate example of that concept. Great job Ben
Great lesson
Awesome content again, Uncle Ben. Especially the hint to isolate the right hand is a game changer. Thanks a lot.
Very good material. Thanks a lot!
Brilliant thx Uncle Ben
5, 7, 8 are three of my favourite notes. Great lesson!
Troy's stuff is awesome, made me way more aware of what my picking hand is doing.
Yeeees, Paul Gilbert is a beast! Love absolutely all his stuff. Thanks for the video, brother
Very cool and helpful mr Ben , keep em coming
Bless you Uncle Ben ! I've just discovered that I've been an ineffective "inside picker" for yrs; switching this to "outside picking" instantly improved my timing and attack... Thanks !!!
Thnx for the tips Ben. Always great to get knowledge from you
Very clear and easy to understand..Thanks uncle Ben
you are such a great teacher. I am leraning your lick right now
Awesome job explaining this! You're a really great teacher. Keep it up man!
Simply wow. Thank you very much for this incredibly enlightening video. I really appreciate the amount of details and different explanations / examples for every concept (camera angles also help a lot). Keep up the amazing work.
Grazie ! Chiaro ed efficace come al solito.
Wow, that was a value packed lesson!! Thanks!
Uncle Ben, you're a total badass! Thanks for taking the time to do these videos!

Thanks Uncle Ben, some good tips...
You are such a great teacher. Dig your humble attitude and screamin' chops.
Congrats on the new place!! Clearly the lessons haven’t suffered!! Thanks again dude-great video👍
thanks Uncle ben
Thanks Uncle Ben...PG is my #1 guitar G-d. Loved the piece towards the end on isolating the picking technique only.
This is a fab lesson 😇😇
Great, great video bro!! congrats on the picking! Thank you so much fo the info
Very informative video with good clarity in your explanations. Good stuff!
Heavens. This was actually useful in my attempts to pic up some speed. Thank you sir.
Paul’s solo on the Neal Morse song “Momentum” is incredible.
Awesome 👍
WTf finally usefull example for pickslanting! Thank you ver much need moooore of this!
You are very knowledgeable and a great guitarist! Great channel!🎸
Always excellent stuff to learn. Not a shredder bur still massively useful cheers.
I was stationed at Ft. Polk, LA. during 1987 and walked into a music store in Alexandria and some music was playing in the background. I asked the manager who that was playing ..Racer X Second Heat. Gone too far was my first attempt at a Paul Gilbert solo..excuse me Mr. Gilbert.
Addicted To That Rush is a great song to learn. Paul is stellar in it
Uncle Ben your awesome
So cooooooool!
Always loved "Skit skat wah" Racer X or "Get out of my yard"- no other guitarist on the planet could make only 3 strings sound that mind blowing.
Good stuff!!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
I have Paul's DVDs. His personality is a plus. Kind of teacher you want
I love you uncle Ben!
Paul Gilbert’s speed is so well show cased in Will My Screen Door Stop Neptune on Fuzz Universe!! Some wild stuff!!
I can not say this enough but thank you for all your great lessons Ben
NICE,,, pick slanting have to try it
I took some lessons from Paul Gilbert when I was a kid. Street Lethal was out but that was all. He mostly did alternate picking and swept the arpeggios. He was actually faster back then. He started to incorporate the hammer on picking combo later on. He also changed the way he holds his pick. He doesn't focus so much on shredding these days but still can as we all know.

@@robbrant9145 That video is slightly after judging by the guitar. He is around 20 years old there. He was playing the guitar they based that one on an Epiphone Coronet. Super lightweight. Then Ibanez built Paul that one and a green one for Bruce.
Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Eudaimonia Overture is my fav Gilbert song. The ending part is such a ride
Ben thank you for taking time to teach. Undoubtedly you could be on a world tour with someone whenever you chose to do so. I would enjoy knowing more about your history and any recordings you have released, and tracks you may have done with people in the studio. I place you right in there with all the monster guitarists. And yes Troy Grady is a monster too!
Great lesson! Thanks Ben. And thanks for the heads up on Troy Grady's picking lesson.
Thanks Ben. My picking has improved immensely since using your techniques. I cant wait for covid to be gone and try it out.
Detailed explanations 👍
Woah Gritar I love it 👍 Thank you so much you clearly covered a couple important aspects of the picking which is helpful as I can apply the principles you point out 👍 God bless you real good
Like the way you break down each step and say what is important that mindless babble I hear other guys over complicate. Great job man. Going to practice your techniques.
Cool, I'm a decent player and reasonably comfortable with alt picking and hybrid picking (not mega fast) but this is something I've not tried so kudos for putting out something 'different'. definitely learnt something new to try tomorrow! Cheers.
This a phenominal speed tip! I had already experimented with 3 note per speed licks by alternate picking once or twice on a string then legato to repeat giving the picking hand time to move up or down to the next string, especially if you are skipping a string. It's easier to alternate pick up a scale than down and adding legato really helps!
All natural man made "hair gel". Thanks for making sure we get learnt. We appreciated it.

He's the best at explaining things. As an example, have you seen his video on pinched harmonics? He puts a texta mark on his thumb to show people exactly what he is doing. I thought it was brilliant. Even though it's not something I needed, I stole the idea when teaching a friend. If his videos were in a slightly better order of progression, he'd be the best teacher on KZread. I'm already happy with my playing, but when I remember to come to this channel, I see there is so much more I could learn.
Ben, u are my fav uncle! :)
Always inspired to get back on the strings after watching these vidyas
Troy Grady has helped change, for the better, the way I and a few of my friends play the guitar. He is a revelation. Very glad to hear you mention him on your own channel.
Pauls solo on Zero Hour on Tafollas "Out of the Sun" album is stellar. Then again, most of his solos are :) Cool lesson man!

Pretty great video Ben. My pick hand is extremely weak, this exercise broke it down nicely, thanks and keep it up.
Hey Ben , I have been watching many of your videos and I have to say they are some of the best , the content is unique and many things I never thought of , or at least I never looked at from your point of view , special thanks for the frank Zappa video you did , also shows your diversity , I played for 30 years and unfortunately had to give it up due to illness , but I still look at videos for information , that may sound strange given my circumstances , but I guess the reason is because I do miss playing , anyway , thank you and keep on with your quality videos !
ben cracks me up 😂
Another slice of awesomeness.. And for some reason, this one fits under my fingers fairly nicely. Thanks Uncle Ben. The part that slows me down in my freaking stretching SUCKS. Perhaps a lesson on that would be nice to see. Thanks!!
