Two things I respect about PG: 1. He has the balls and the hand strength to play with gain levels that don't hide much (in other words, he doesn't hide behind pre-gain-laden overdrive that does some of the magic for you), and; 2. He has matured like fine wine in his playing. Where he used to shred and shred, he now plays with a really killer soulful approach and saves the speed for where it has the most impact. Mad respect for PG, and I'm not even a huge fan.

It was late 1985 early 1986 and my band was practicing at Hotdog Sound Studio in Arleta California. WE were taking a break from our practice set and a couple of guys poked theirs heads in our room and said, "what's up?" we talked for a few minutes, and they went back to setting up their equipment in the big sound room next to ours. We went back to playing until our time was up and we started breaking down our equipment to put it back in our lockout cabinet. It was at this time I heard music coming from the next room. I could not believe my ears! I had never heard such musicianship in my life! These guys were unbelievable! I asked the sound guy at the front desk "Who are these guys???" He said they are a new band called "Racer X", They just started practicing here a few weeks ago. We walked back down the hall and poked our heads in their door and noticed it was the same guys we had talked to earlier. The bass player said we could watch for a few if we wanted. We hung out for a few, but our presence seemed like a distraction, so we only sat in for about 1 song. Talk about a humbling experience ☹. After we walked out, we just kind of stood around and looked at each other in our practice room while we put the rest of our gear away. We thought we were pretty good until that night. These guys weren't even on the same planet as us! I am not a great guitar player; I am decent but nothing special. These guys had me asking myself "why am I even bothering?!?" They were that good! We saw them practice there a few more times but we knew they wouldn't be practicing at that dump for very long 😆

Thank you for this video. Paul takes the number one spot for me and is still incredibly underrated in the mainstream. People paint him as a super shredder who later went bluesy but he was still a young guy for the first few Mr Big albums and his playing and writing on those albums was fantastic. Not show off shred but exactly what each song needed to be their best and with great melodies. These days he’s making fantastic solo albums and has also become one of the best teachers you will find. His enthusiasm for all types of music and for teaching is infectious. Then of course he can still run rings around most player and blow them off the stage if he wanted.

I think I borrowed one of the Paul Gilbert REH videos from my friend, Billy, more than 20 years ago! He had all of these tablature books, Metallica, Malmsteen, Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, oh, can't forget about Surfing With the Alien, had that one, too...anyway, his dad wanted him to be a hair metal shredder but he was more into Radiohead and Modest Mouse, stuff like that, so, I was free to borrow all the tab books and instructional tapes (also, the guitar magazines). That was 20+ years ago, I barely knew, nothing, at that point, less than nothing, and here I was learning from the best. I still remember how to play most of my songs, that I can play, from that period and from those books. I didn't even know what to do with the Paul Gilbert REH, it was leagues beyond my skill at the time and it's probably, what I need to watch, currently. I do remember reading a Guitar World from the 90s (mid to late 90s) that had Paul, breaking down some of his picking techniques...I may still use those techniques or did for years and based my own picking techniques off of that section in GW and from the Mel Bay's book, Deluxe Arpeggio Studies for guitar by Art Orzeck and Al Hendrickson (I recommend you buy that book and study it, if you're keen to learn your Arpeggios and scales and how they relate to each other, etc) which has a detailed breakdown of picking in the beginning section. It's simple but it's also foundational. I never heard Paul's Racer X stuff, growing up, always knew he was in that band but pre-internet or emergence of the internet being accessible to me (2000-2001), I didn't have a way to come here to KZread and check it out. Talk about insanity, that dude was on fire in that era...fast and clean, not that he ever fell off, because he hasn't. Paul seems like the coolest dude and this was a great video, Guitar Meets Science. I'll hit the subscribe button and stick around for some more videos.

I saw Paul with Racer X a dozen times back in his club days in L.A. from '86 to '88. I've met the band too, all very nice people. I believe it became evident to Paul that Racer X was a limited platform for his talents, and the opportunity to form Mr. Big with Billy Sheehan, who was already a high name, was a better deal. Eric Martin had the look and the voice whereas Jeff Martin, a great singer, didn't have the pretty boy looks frontmen were required to have in the hair metal 80s. I was never much of a Mr. Big fan, but I always admired their talent and they are a good party band. Very upbeat music.

I really like your breakdown - that sums it up perfectly! It's cool that you had a chance to meet them especially back in those days. Seemed like a pretty cool bunch of guys. What was cool about Mr Big is that it gave One of the real shredders of the day an actual platform to build a career off of. Like you, I agree that a lot of their material didn't hit as hard for my tastes. But hearing that first album and how he integrated his guitar chops definitely was a treat. I think after that it felt like their production ran away with them and didn't have that immediacy. Kudos to Paul though - it totally took him to another level, and it turned out to also widen the reach of racer x when he reformed them.

Paul Gilbert is the "hendrix " of shred. Yngwie came first and is fast but he didn't embrace the shred like Paul did in racer x

I really don’t like his music, but I’ve heard Paul is one of the only guitarists that scared Yngwie Malmsteen. Watching this video, I can understand why…just…what? Like…human beings can actually do this shit?

Paul was doing all this at the same time EVH was getting all the recognition and people saying no one had ever done stuff like Eddy was doing. Eddy got the greater recognition because of the band, the flamboyant DLR, the tunes they wrote were outstanding, lots of girls liked Van Halen, while PG and Racer X was mostly admired by guy guitar players. But in my opinion, PG was a more technically proficient player and sophisticated. Although a couple of his songs like Scarified are outstanding, some are second rate musically compared to VH.

Pauls awesome,...but playes the same stuff he did in Racer X,....he hasn't matured or evolved,......look at Richie Kotzen,.....he could play all this shed stuff at 17,......but evolved into this blues singer song writer that has an ever evolving style,......paul plays scales fast then,...and fast scales now
