Patti Smith Interview: Advice to the Young | Louisiana Channel
Музыка
"Build a good name," rock poet Patti Smith advises the young. "Keep your name clean. Don’t make compromises. Don’t worry about making a bunch of money or being successful. Be concerned about doing good work and protect your work."
The American singer, poet and photographer Patti Smith (b. 1946) is a living punk rock legend. In this video she gives powerful advice to the young: "Protect your work and if you build a good name, eventually that name will be its own currency. Life is like a roller coaster ride, it is never going to be perfect. It is going to have perfect moments and rough spots, but it’s all worth it."
Patti Smith (b.1946) is an award-winning American punk rock musician, poet and visual artist, who became a highly influential figure in the New York City punk rock scene with her debut album ‘Horses’ in 1975. Smith fuses rock and poetry in her work, and has been dubbed the ”punk poet laureate” as well as ”the godmother of punk.” In 2007 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and in 2010 Rolling Stone magazine put her on the 47th place of their list of 100 Greatest Artists. Among her many albums are ’Horses’ (1975), ’Radio Ethiopia’ (1976), ’Easter’ (1978), ’Gone Again’ (1996) and ’Banga’ (2012). Smith is also the author of several books, including ’Woolgathering’ (1992), ’Just Kids’ (2010) - which won the National Book Award and describes her relationship to her lover and friend, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe - and ’M Train’ (2015).
Patti Smith was interviewed by Christian Lund at the Louisiana Literature festival at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark in August 2012.

Ironically, the most "punk rock" thing someone could do is saying "fuck you" to punk rock lmao. She really IS the godmother of punk. Iconic.
"Build a good name, do good work." Solid advice.

I applied every word she said to my line of work and let the words infiltrate into my heart. I have loved her since "Horses".
Amazing woman; I love how the interviewer just sits and lets her speak, soaking in her wisdom with the crowd,
I'm now going through a hard time in my life as an artist. This video really made me cry.

I want my 18 year-old daughter to see this. I wish someone would have given me similar guidance when I was "young". May have influenced me away from all the wrong turns I made.
Patti Smith gives such poignant yet simple advice to the young, but I think it speaks to anyone who realizes their potential in this world as a human being. This shining star of a human poet has lived.
I love her. These are the people who we need to look up to and admire. I love her spirit so much....

True artist. The work fulfills. Patti is saintly in her loving sincerity. In a world where everyone lies, she speaks the truth. A true angel.
Patti is incredibly grounded and inspiring at the same time.
I listen to this everyday. I'm an adult now but I was never given this advice - it was always that I had to look a certain way or do certain things to please other people in order to live a 'good' life. It's thanks to artists and writers (like Patti) who have shaped me and my world view. I was taught by them to be free and independent.
Patti gives the truth about life here. Life is shorter than most people imagine, A squirrel arrived in my garden this morning and gave me a big smile!
Patti is an angel. She's brought a lot of peace to my life in a mothering sort of way.
She has such an inspirational speech for who wants to be creative.
The very embodiment of raw unadorned honest punk attitude. No one deserves the title punk godmother more than our dearest Patti. She breaks my heart every time she speaks or performs and I love her to the moon.
She's so wise, I love her

such a positive person, and a true poet… when she spoke in Melbourne at her gig just as the GFC was happening, she was a healing balm
All those tears that have been stuck in anger, fear, self-harm, doom, for a year - probably 3,4,5... all those ones came welling down in the sea of words of Patricia Lee Smith. You've saved me from moments, tonight you possibly saved me from the worst - myself. xx

Love this. Tears. Required watching for any creative.
I have been reading Patti's books, listening to her albums, and studying her poetry and biography lately, and my respect and admiration for her increase as I go. And she and Robert Mapplethorpe had the kind of love I wish I could find.
She is amazing. So wise, so whole, so truthful. Gotta love her
I never had clear goals, dreams, just a knowledge that I have a lot of power and potential but I never knew what to do with it, and at times that made me feel so low.. I am currently embracing what she is saying about just do what you want and accept that life is a package of both joy and suffering.
What makes her so beautiful to me is the fact that she is real and honest in a time were people are fake and think that we should worship them. That is why I think she is beautiful
'ye know, my name is Smith'. she is so fresh!
Oh Patricia, you've always been my north star 🌟
During my Insomnia this week, I have found myself stumbling upon some wonderful (and some weird) KZread videos. This one last night stood out, and the content is just as relevant in today's world. I really love Patti Smith. 🖤 ps; I also re-watched Patti performing Bob Dylan's 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall', at Bob's Nobel Prize ceremony. Even the best of us still get nervous. Such humility and grace..and after a restart, she nailed it beautifully. The emotion was palpable. Bob was said to have laughed and remarked that 'nobody messes up my lyrics more than I do'. Definitely something to check out if you're a Bob and/or Patti fan.

We are going through such a shitty time in the world right now. Listening to her words really gave me hope. She's such a remarkable being.
This made me cry. Love you Patti
😭 Her vibrations are inspired ❤️
I'll feel thankful for the rest of my life for this advice. Thank you Patti❤
Patti provides encouragement to people who care about the truly important things. Her words: "People have the power to redeem the work of fools." It is important that messages of hope and inspiration continue to come from artists with integrity who have earned our trust and admiration.

Maria Chat I love Patti Smith and what she has to say. Too bad that the people who control communication technology also can control what is put on the net and also make sure things they do not want the people to hear,...... that they will not hear. or read.

James W. Barrett I was hoping that the Internet was that one place that people could upload information and search for information and be selective about it. People choose not to listen, that's my experience so far.

Maria Chat you can't listen to something you cannot hear because it's been removed and deleted from the artificial information network. Not trying to argue your point or say its not possible. it just will not happen on a government controlled and monitored network. or maybe you just don't understand the complexity of technology and how easily it can be modified or monitored. And the internet started as a military communication system for the sole purpose of realtime information sharing world wide for the purpose of..... well you ponder why the war machine would want to be on the same page we the same time..
I'm reading her book these days, the M Train, in which she's representing herself as she is, as a wonderful human being, showing her everyday life, with all the joys and struggles, ups and downs. She is true to the public as she is to herself, in this speech and in written word as well. A person to look up to 🙏🏻
This is great advice for anyone. Thanks Patti!
The wisdom of Patti Smith has inspired me since I first heard Horses. And just continues to inspire.
I love Patti Smith since she began her career and always followed her. She is so deep and philosophy in her belief system of life experience. In my humble opinion, she rises to the tier of a near Genius. Not only is she beautiful inside, but beautiful outside of herself with no inhibitions,of which she does NOT hold back. Lastly, boy what a true Artist of real ideals that are based on concrete life.
How wise she is. Her memoir ‘just kids’ was so beautifully written. A true poet
Fantastic personality
I've always LOVED Patti Smith .. ever since I heard the Horses album way back in the day! .. But, lately, I've been kind of rediscovering her for myself. Now I'm looking forward to reading her memoir books. .. and wow, this video, what she says here .. she basically says it all doesn't she. .. Such a pure, honest, beautiful spirit. I love her.
I shed a tear of happiness
Love Patti Smith. Lucky to have her accompany me thru my youth. Yeah! Turn it up.
oh god she's the light. This is so inspiring and strong that made me cry. Gave me that faith to keep going.
Great interviewer - doesn't interrupt her with lots of questions.

Yeah I wish there were moments like that on "regular" TV all over the world. Instead people are forced to half-ass their ideas out, no room for nuances, for real talk, for thinking out loud and giving time to let it sink in. That's one of the reasons we have so much hate, so much frustration and so many simplistic ideas flying around I think. There are many more wise "public figures" out there I'm sure, it's just very very hard to find them.
I could listen to this over and over and over......🌈♥️
Just ride with it, it's worth it ♠️ One of the most beautiful take on Technilogy, ut enabled everyone to express. 🖤
During quarantine I finally listened to her narrate her book Just Kids and she’s very intelligent. Kind person. It’s just crazy how many iconic people she’s had in her life.
She has been blessed and she is not afraid to share her blessings with us.
She might not want to hear this, but, GOD BLESS YOU!
Solid, real, uncompromising, loving,..
Love this talk from her. I love her. She really helps me as a struggling artist too.
So much wisdom in one person. In some ways it doesn’t even seem fair (I say that with the utmost respect and admiration), but the amount of experience you have to cram into one lifetime to have a mind like her’s would probably break most of us. Thank you Patti 😊✌🏻🇺🇸
"We are living in a time like no other in history...We can bring down these people and these governments that think they rule everything..." Thank you Patty. That is the truest and most important thing we need to hear and understand and act on.
She’s amazing ❤️
