Generating parametric patterns has never been easier thanks to the plugin Parakeet for Grasshopper. This plugin is free to use and it allows us to parametrically modify characteristics of a pattern so that we can create many different pattern iterations in no time.
In order to construct a pattern, we need two components: grid and pattern genotype. These two ingredients are essential and on top of the regular patterns, we can also use attractor points or lines to get more dynamic design iterations.
In the extended version of this tutorial which is available on our Patreon page, we are going to cover a more advanced example where we will be using multiple attractor points which will be the centers of our circular columns at the same time. In the end, we’ll create a bigger structure based on our initial point distribution.
Chapters:
00:00 - Intro and Basics
03:38 - Example with Attractor Point
07:04 - Example with 2D to 3D projection
10:20 - Growth Algorithm
10:25 - Flow Path Algorithm
15:06 - Extended Version

Hi! is there a way to morph the pattern on the SubD? to avoid the elongation of the pattern that happens when using "projection"

  • @HowtoRhino

This is pretty straight forward, just use SubDCylinder command, and delete the top and the bottom. Scale down the bottom part and you have a column with subD :)
