Hey, is placing a tongue shim only under the bottom cuff strap something that is sometimes done for big calf people? I often feel like that by the time my ankle is locked in place, I have to much pressure on my calf (upper cuff strap).

Sure that can really help to get a better fit at the lower leg and not rely on cranking your boots up as tight! Also really try to dial in all the buckle placement to get the right tension. You shouldn't need to tighten to the point where you are cutting off circulation or putting excess pressure on calves or outer side of your legs.
