Patrick Mahomes Is Already An NFL Legend...

Спорт

So we just saw Patrick Mahomes take the Kansas City Chiefs to glory as he won super bowl 57 and established the chiefs as a dynasty. So this begs to ask the question, through just 5 years is Patrick Mahomes already the best quarterback of all time? Anyway, if you enjoyed this video, then like and comment if you want, and you can even subscribe if you think I've earned it.
Now that Barry McCockiner has just made a video on Tom Brady and his NFL playoff failures, this is the time for the NFL highlights of Aaron Rodgers and Tom Grossi to shine. So with urinatingtree and KTO continuing to find the best quarterback through NFL news, we now know who the NFL goat is.

Adjusted for era, Steve Young from 92-98 was 1.33% above league average in terms of passer rating and ANY/A. Adjusted for era, he was the most efficient QB post merger. That’s the equivalent of a 119.7 passer rating in 2021.

Great video, TF! I had a similar kind of idea a little while ago, because I wanted to see what the best 16-game spans were in NFL history. This required me to create four era-adjusted stats: CP+, Rtg+, ANY+, and SQ. The first three are measured relative to the rest of the league during the span, on a scale where 100 is average and higher is better (like baseball), measuring completion percentage, passer rating, and adjusted net yards per attempt, respectively. The last is span quality, which is equal to (20% × CP+) + (40% × Rtg+) + (40% × ANY+). Patrick Mahomes has played 80 of what I call "games that matter," i.e., for quarterbacks, regular-season games in which they threw at least one pass attempt. I'm ignoring the playoffs because they don't count for career stats and because I excluded them from my sample of 16-game spans. In those 80 games, he has thrown for 24,241 yards (most among all 167 QBs with at least 80 games that matter in their first 80 such games), 192 TDs (most), and 49 INTs (T-6th fewest; Jeff Hostetler had 42 through 80 games), and managed a completion percentage of 66.3% (2nd highest behind Dak Prescott at 66.5%), a passer rating of 105.7 (highest), and an ANY/A of 8.05 (highest). That all aligns with this video. However, he is 64th in CP+ at 102.6 (Ken Stabler leads at 115.9), 25th in Rtg+ at 115.2 (Otto Graham leads at 140.5), and 16th in ANY+ at 129.6 (Norm van Brocklin leads at 159.2), and that adds up to an average SQ of 118.4 (19th; Graham is 1st at 141.2). That's not to discredit Mahomes from any of his accomplishments; in fact, it speaks to the vast improvements in the average performance of quarterbacks through the decades, that even in the most competitive and high-quality era of QB play, Mahomes still distinguishes himself from his peers. Among QBs who have played the majority of their careers in the 21st century, he is behind only Kurt Warner, Philip Rivers, and Aaron Rodgers in average span quality over the first 80 games of a career, and he blows them all out of the water with his career counting stats to that point. What Patrick Mahomes has done is nothing short of legendary, and as a Chiefs fan I sincerely hope it continues.

Before I say anything, i have to say good video, but out of the 6 categories, 3 are just are not fair to old quarterbacks at all. That being part 1, part 4, and part 5. Instead of just using those stats as is, you could compare those stats to the league average. For example, lets say a QB had a passer rating of 100 and a completion% of 65.0 over his 1st 5 years, and lets say the league averages over those 5 years were a 75 passer rating and a completion% of 55. Using the metric that u made the QB had a score of 165 and the average would have been 130. By dividing the QB score by the average score you could determine that the QB was 1.22× timer better than average QB in that category. This would account for era and it would make the video much more accurate. You could do the same for the other 2 categories. The other categories are fine though. Another thing could tweak is instead of a point system, you could just do average placement among the 6 categories.

I would say it would be more interesting to make that "passing yards" stat "passing yards above average" so you’re comparing Mahomes to Allen and Herbert, and not to Aikman and Steve Young. It would have been MUCH more difficult to do but would probably provide a more accurate depiction of skill. Also All Pros should probably be worth more than pro bowls.

As a Brady and Patriots fan, I wanna try to explain why Brady isn't in the top ten. For those who may have been expecting him to. Keep in mind, this video shows stats from their first 5 seasons. Brady sat out his first year, the year he was drafted. Now while he did win 3 superbowls over the next 4 years after, he hadn't developed into the passing threat wr know him as now. He was good, yes. But, no where near as good. He played the role Unitas and Manning did of being the field general and did that well, but didn't have the flashy plays or numbers yet at the time. In those first 5 years, his teams, imo, were so good because of their defense. Keeping in mind Belichick was a defensive coordinator for the Giants before this, it's easy to see how their defense was so dominant. We also have to remember that 2 of those 3 superbowls were won because of an Adam Field goal, and not a Brady drive. He hadn't proven himself to be as dominant as he we know now, so he played more conservatively than we're used to him doing and played more methodical football. Now, if this video had compared those qb's entire careers, Brady would be top 5 along with Brees and Manning and maybe Montana. But, it goes to show that not all legends started off as legends like Mahomes did, giving Mahomes just that little more credibility.

The NFL has a couple of Corvettes and maybe a few Mustangs, but there's only one Rolls and it's going to run all over you. Stop trying to rationalize it and just understand it's a force of nature you can't understand and certainly can't control. RUN IT BACK - EVERY DAMN YEAR

Anyone who looks objectively and honestly at the facts knows Mahomes is already the best QB ever. It didn't take 6 championships before people crowned Jordan the GOAT. We knew it when we saw it, and the more we saw it, the more we knew it. Although you're using the completely wrong stats to measure QB success, and you didn't weight the scoring at all, which means things like TDs and INT % are equally as valuable as pointless measurements such as the popularity contest and clown show that constitutes a Pro Bowl appearance...yet you've somehow come up with the correct answer anyway. Does anyone else get a feeling that Mahomes is going to get hurt and struggle to stay on the field in the coming years? He's still so young and is clearly the best QB of his generation at this point, but at some point it's going to catch up to him. He doesn't play in a reckless way like Cam Newton or Lamar Jackson, but with my nearly 4 decades of following the NFL, I've seen this sort of thing happen before. I certainly don't hope for that to happen to him as he is amazing to watch and incredibly gifted, but there is an element of his game that relies on his athleticism and few athletic QB's like him are able to play at that level for very long. The one advantage he has is he is a really great pocket passer too (this past Super Bowl a perfect example) and can pick apart a defense without using his legs.

The changes for the QB position throughout different eras, imo, aren't as different as say the NBA changing the traveling rule. It's not the rule changes that changed the game of football as much as it is the size of players. This era values speed, in turn resulting in smaller players. That's the biggest difference between the NFL today and the NFL in 1980

You count same categories double and triple while not adjusting for era (example; compl. pct + Rating, which already includes cmp pct)... Ofc Mahomes comes out on top then. Always loving your vids, but this one is really flawed. So here we go with real numbers (adjusted for era): Pcercentage above league average in passer rating per football-reference (random QBs chosen, min. 7 games played = at least 50% of games per "old" 14 game schedule): Mahomes 131 124 122 117 109 Rivers 127 126 120 115 101 McMahon 127 117 111 107 103 Marino 141 125 124 119 113 Unitas 135 127 125 116 106 Graham 149 142 134 120 110 Montana 134 124 123 122 118 You see the pattern? Mahomes is in the middle of random picked famous QBs in the history of pro football. Mahomes gets the benefit of the soft rules the NFL implemented for passers. People think he is the next "Jesus" because memory fades away. Yet every decade had its "Mohomes", or two, or three...

I'm fine with most of this, but Pro Bowl and All Pro are the most useless stats in football. Your list doesn't pass the eye ball test. Brady won 3 Superbowls with 3 SB MVPs but is number 13. Any stat that has McNabb higher in the first 5 years than Brady, Brees, Aikman, and Rodgers is a garbage stat. And total yards is misleading too. Although Peyton Manning was undeniably amazing, his teams passed much more often early in his career because the Colts sucked and played from behind.

@@theinternet4344 I would say just making it to multiple SBs like Jim Kelly is more impressive than Pro Bowls. Pro Bowls are popularity contests. Shaun O'Hara made the pro bowl after missing 10 games. TJ Watt missed 6 games and made the Pro Bowl. In 2019 Christian McCaffery somehow was snubbed from the pro bowl despite leading all rbs in receiving yards and having over 1700 scrimmage yards. The pro bowl selection is meaningless because it's a popularity vote.
