Honestly, the guilt Bruce feels over being happy in this movie is some of the most complex and interesting emotion work I've seen in a movie bar none. It's actually crazy. How does a team of writers make the decision to make a character whose whole thing is misery, miserable because he is happy. It's both true to the character and a complete inverse of the expectations of that character. Seriously one of my favorite lines of all time.

I never feel as connected to an animated figure as with an real actor. I can never really sink into this world. I know, it is my problem and most people don't feel like this but it is the truth. Btw. it is the same with Game-characters. It is too unreal. Too wooden. I still enjoy a lot of games and can also watch an animation film and have fun with it, but I could never put any animation batman over one of the Nolan or Burton movies. No way. Sorry.

Yes, if the video mentioned Conroy being the best Batman I would have included that on the list, though I think that statement is less controversial since none of portrayals of Batman are nearly as well regarded as Heath Ledger's Joker. And yes, Justice League Unlimited is one of my favorite shows ever, cartoon or otherwise. Almost all of the DCAU is worth revisiting.

What you know now that the new Batman movie will adapt some parts of Batman ego and the director of that this movie Matt Reeves is now currently developing new Batman animated series along with the main architect and visionary of Batman mask of phantasm and entire DCAU in general Bruce Timm. I'm definitely sure Matt Reeves would have discussed with Bruce Timm regarding some story elements of The Batman. Finally after so many years, we finally going to see some form of adaptation of Batman the animated series in live action. Nolan's Batman movies are also great, they belong in totally different categories compared to Batman the animated series vibe.

I kinda love that Mask of the Phantasm is ultimately a tragic love story before it's a superhero story.
I think TAS Batman is the best incarnation of Batman. Not only did they do an excellent job of developing Batman but they gave him a depth of empathy and compassion rarely seen in other interpretations of the character. TAS Batman genuinely wants to help everyone, including his worst villains. Because Batman understands how just one bad day can ruin someone's life, he wants all the criminals and villains he fights to have a chance to overcome their trauma, so they can one day redeem themselves.

It’s tragic because whenever my friends ask me “what’s your favorite Batman movie” I always say “mask of the phantasm” and they always are like “what’s that”
what I also love is how the subtle way they make the Phantasm a part of the DCAU by showing her in the Justice League Unlimited episode Epilogue, as the assassin that was hired to kill Terry McGinnis' parents after they left the theater, only for her to refuse.
This film has the best score in any Batman anything. Hands down.

Dude, you're speaking my language. The animated series is one of the best animated cartoons ever and It's aged like a fine wine. Also, this movie is a masterpiece and I'm glad it's getting the attention it deserves.
Bruce's guilt over being happy is my favorite thing ever done with his character. The Nolan movies show shades of it but not in the right light. The sadness, grief, and all that entails as the driving factor for his origin is almost a choice. It's comfort, it's familiar. Sometimes pain is the only thing a person has, or what they cling to the hardest. Letting go of it means that you truly lose everything about the loss. Not having the pain means they aren't with you anymore. Wasn't really a fan of the movie "Manchester by the sea" but that exact thing is one of the ideas explored in the movie and this kids movie did it in better form and in a much more compelling but equally somber way. Wholeheartedly agree. Hamill will always be my favorite. I think because it's a cartoon alot of people can ignore specific things about the animated character but that joker is truly the most terrifying to me.

Imagine the move without it. The fight has just barely started, and The Joker just lodges this cleaver deep into the side of Batman's ex's head. I imagine there's a moment of silence as Batman and Joker just stare at the collapsed corpse, spewing blood and fragments of skull all over the floor. You can tell they're both just thinking, 'holy shit. I can't believe that just happened. That went bad so fast.' Then Bruce falls to his knees, mourning the fact that from the moment they both became obsessed with the deaths of their parents, their love was on a slow moving train with this as the only destination. Bruce doesn't go over to her, just stares at the ground and weeps. As the screen fades to black, we hear The Joker start to laugh.

One of my favourite scenes in this film is the mugging that Bruce attempts to stop during his date with Andrea. The moment he meets an oncoming motorcycle with a focused, icy stare is chilling. No utility belt, no body armour, no costume, and he's still about to take on a chain wielding goon on the back of a bike. One of the moments in the film that just affirms "My god. It's good to see another love for this movie. This movie up until know is among my top 10 best superhero movies of all time. I even dare to say this movie triumphs all MCU movie imho. Just that scene at the grave where Bruce is confused on how he should live his own life is just tragic.
"I didn't count on being happy" my favorite batman line of all time. glad to hear someone else sing the praises of this movie!
"This Joker is probably the best version of the character ever. Even better than (beat) the Jared Leto one." /sips drink and waits for several seconds You can cast that line all you want, but I know bait when I see it.
Best part is Alfred being genuinely terrified by Bruce in the Batsuit for the first time. Like I know that had more meaning to it, but rly he’s just witnessing a guy dressing up in a bat costume
More needs to be said of Shirley Walker's score. It's stunning. And I think it's the finest use of Elfman's theme and motifs AND it's use of the Russian choir is so damn inspired. Genius!
The part at the World's Fair where Bruce finds the car that he makes into the Bat-Mobile has stayed in my mind in such detail since seeing the movie in Cinema's as a child all those years ago, such a great part

I've been preaching this message for well over 20 years - I once threw a party where I made my friends sit and watch it. Totally flew over my head as a kid but I can't help but wonder who was approving their content back then!

I bet you're really happy these days.
"Batman is better than you remember." This is so true. About a year ago, after two decades and a couple odd years since I'd last seen it, I came back and rewatched it from start to finish on a whim. And the first thing that struck me was how much depth (and style) it has. My family would watch it together, and I never understood why. It isn't simply a kids' show, but it wasn't clear to me then.
The graveyard scene where Bruce is talking to his parents’ gravestone is why it’s still the best Batman movie

Just saw the movie yesterday... how haven't I seen this in my 21 years of life? and hey this video was posted on my birthday!
The Batman movie where Bruce Wayne apologizes and feels utterlty guilty for feeling... Happy. Absolutely genius and it always puts a lump in my throat. "I never expected to feel happy." Great analysis, very well produced. I am subscribing.
All the points you bring up about The Dark Knight are spot on. I've always felt The Dark Knight is a great thriller...but not such a great Batman movie. I've always thought Batman Begins was much closer to capturing the feel of a Batman comic. And yes, Mask of the Phantasm is brilliant.
Wow I just literally watched this yesterday.
Thank you Patrick for making me revisit all those wonderful emotions that swept over me even when I first saw it as a 12-year old! For me, it was the already first 5 seconds of Shirley Walker's score as the camera moves through Gotham that made this movie feel special beyond expectations! I love that you made a this movie about how great Mask of The Phantasm is! Thank you again!
You have struck Gold with this style of review or retrospective. Please keep them coming
That scene when he puts on the mask gives me chills every single time.
i want someone to explore the implications behind the reveal in jlu that someone dressed as the phantasm is responsible for terry mcginnis actually turning out to be bruce wayne's biological son
Love how you incorporated your parents in your video at the end. Legends of the Dark Knight and the Detective comics were some of my favorite on-going storylines. I am also a fan of the movie Batman: Mask of the Phantasm and Batman the Animated TV Series. The art, voice-over casting choices, the emotion in their voices, the music, the writing -- by far one of the best animated shows I have ever seen. To me, Kevin Conroy set the standard for Batman's voice.. and Hollywood should look at the Animated Series as something to emulate and adapt to the big screen for a live action film. Not mentioned nearly enough, Dana Delany is a fantastic voice-over actress for Bruce's love interest, but she also did the voice for Lois Lane in Superman. I also like the character style and voices of Batman in the Arkham games with new guy Roger Craig Smith, and Tell-tale series games with Troy Baker as Batman's voice. In my opinion, Baker did good as both Batman and the Joker, but it's a hoot to watch Mark Hamill do his Joker voice-over lines live - he is so animated himself. As for the live actions movies, I prefer fins on the bat mobile too, it just looks more like a "bat" mobile. However, I think the military pod fit into the concept that Chris Nolan was going for - realism rather than feeling comic book-y. I like Batman movies that are comic book-y, just not campy. The Tim Burton's movies were very well-done, even though the setting was not modern-day. As far as the feeling of a Batman movie, I like realism with fantasy that has a noir feeling, but not too much, where the bleakness of the environment overtakes the heart and soul within the hero. What I am not a fan of is the campy 60's Adam West, and the Batman and Robin movie. Though many people think of Adam West as the original or the standard, Batman actually began in the forties with Lewis Wilson and Robert Lowery.
As a child of the late 80s and early 90s, I must say that I watched A LOT of The Animated Series. I absolutely loved it, I remember watching the Mr Freeze story line and thinking, "Wait, why I am kind of on his side and bit Batman's?" while also just loving the visuals of the snow and the ballerina. O man, things are getting nostalgic!
I feel like they could have done a similar story of this for the dark knight rises

Just seeing the title of the video made me extremely excited. Grew up watching this movie! I just know this video is going to be freakin great.
