I am a 48 yr old American male. Paddington 2 is the exact type of movie I wish would flood this country. A real hero with real impact upon the people around him. And a villain that is completely human and still just plain wrong.

One of my favourite things about these movies, is that the original books were pretty nakedly about the evacuation of British children from major cities during WWII. Often with little more than a name tag and a suitcase, 3.5 million people, mostly children, were evacuated. They were usually separated from their parents and taken in by complete strangers. By taking this event, of which most Britons are justifiably proud, and tying it to the plight of foreign children, who need a home and safe harbour, Paddington makes this deft and persuasive political point. My own grandfather may not have survived the war had he not been taken in and kept safe from Nazi aerial bombing during the blitz, and to see rich countries turn away children who face the same threat, it's abhorrent.

Well said, Alex: completely agree. We are proud of the evacuation efforts conducted in WW2, and there are millions of us who are horrified by the continued rise of anti-immigrant hysteria here in Britain in the 21st century.

As a Brit, I love these movies. What, I’m partial to movies of my nationality. I also love the magical feel of this movie. It presents London as this delightfully offbeat place, just filled to the brim with all these quirky characters played by great British actors and/or comedians. Films like these are... well British. You can see this film... and you’ll think Britain. To that effect, it’s to kids movies what Good Omens is to comedy, which was built off Christianity, but it’s really just religiously English.

But the answers is in fact Paddington 2, most the time they think i'm joking because i'm such a film buff going to see every new release, but that's the honest answer. Such an amazing movie.

I am British, allow me to explain the coconut thing: In British funfairs we have these things called a Coconut Shy - You get a couple balls and you throw them at coconuts to try and knock them down, for the chance of winning a goldfish or something. We do not throw coconuts around, don't be daft.

Funnily enough I once won a huge bear the size of Paddington bear, at a coconut shy, when I was a kid. It was because I managed to crack the coconut, which was harder than just knocking it off, and you got a better prize if you did that. I've no idea where that bear has gone, but it was 20+ years ago now.

These movies are literally the quintessential family experiences and the best part is anyone can enjoy them. The comedy, style, setting, tone and acting is all exaggerated but still kept small so you can feel immersed in this world. All of the characters have a brilliant dynamic that you RARELY see in kids films or really anything nowadays so it's really BRILLIANT that something like Paddington exists for children and adults. Also, the greatest scene in the second movie has to be Paddington and Knuckles meeting for the first time and their relationship. If you haven't seen it already, what are you doing with your life???

I haven't seen the Paddington films, but fondly remember the 1970s TV series. Those bits with the pop-up book look like a nod to the TV show, in that Paddington himself was an animated furry model bear, but all the human characters were animated cardboard cut-outs that looked like they had come from a pop-up book, and the backgrounds were done in similar style.

Holy F**k. If there’s an equivalent of a Roger Ebert doing a Dark City dvd, you’re the multimedia version of a dissection & comparison & passion and always wanting to do more. You, sir, are one of the most respected opinions on the Internets. And you’re relevant & your parents are a national treasure.

Glad you appreciate one of our national treasures, Paddington bear. The audio books read by Stephen Fry are golden and come with a high recommendation.
