    I think the thing you have to keep in mind with direct damage casting is someone committed to it wants to see the big numbers regularly. They like that, its like the guy who picks greatsword. They like their guy to do the big numbers. Its not as fun if their guy incapacitates the enemy if the other characters are doing all the damage. Or they are afraid they won't make caster level checks for other things. To do the big numbers I think there are 2 prerequisites (not including shennanigans with Lich). 1 Ascendent element, lightning for spontaneous casters due to those bracers and then fire for vancian casters because there are more reliable fire spells that can be metamagicked. 2 Arcane Trickster. Sneak attack means a lot. The sad thing is this kind of high damage number caster only comes online towards the end of chapter 3. I think you an also get a lot out of the metamagic versions of scorching ray with ascendent and especially with trickster. You have a lot of those casts before you ever get Hellfire ray. And then you have a lot still left over for the grease/glitterdust/haste casts I did hear that Loremaster no longer costs you a spellcasting level so you could make up some of the feat deficit that way now. At level 8 I wouldn't sleep on Polar ray because it reduces dex. Those carnivorous crystals only have 1 dex. And you can see where this is going. Situational but it can make very annoying encounters a rug pull on the bad guys. Also Wail of the Banshee can be good for a trickster. It has a gigantic range and you can put selective spell on it for free. So it can be, I want everything that could conceivably be hit hit for 200 damage or whatever caster level is. Wandering around Iz having selective wail of the banshee can be nice.

    I noticed you didn't talk about too many transmutation spells-are they any good? I recently took spell focuses in transmutation because I wanted to cast stuff like baleful polymorph, disintegrate, and resonating word. Have you tried these?

  • @cRPGBro

    @cRPGBro

    2 жыл бұрын

    I wouldn't say they're bad - it's just that they're easily outclassed by other spells of the same level. Disintegrate vs Hellfire Ray for example (which doesn't have a save). Or Resonating Word which can stagger after a save the first round - but you could just cast something that already has a stronger effect on the first round instead of having to wait to stun + damage. Once again, this does not mean they aren't viable, with a proper party and strategy you can overcome anything so if the goal is to have fun with a certain playstyle or roleplaying, you sure can go for it!

    A random idea: what about guide for early game (ACT 1), especially on unfair? When you have no mythic powers, limited companions, only circle 1-2 spells and some scrolls and mercs that can be bought with limited money. In which order do you defeat early game bosses / clear locations? What scrolls do you use? Maybe you buy some mercs that are not used later but have some nice early game abilities/spells that can be game-changing? Or dip companions you don't plan on using later into classes that grant them immediate rewards (but not necessarily long-term viability)? Like giving Lann (who you don't seem to use much overall) levels in Freebooter or making him a second shaman (so that everyone has both fortune and protective luck hexes early game with enough chanting) or stuff like that. Etc. IMO, It's an interesting part of the game because of how limited resources are (as opposed to late game where you have pretty much everything).

    Great guide as always cRPGBro. I will have a kinda non-relevant question(but kinda relevant too), I can test it myself of course, but wanted to hear your opinion too. I just finished Gray Garrison and my party is level 6/mythic level 1. I am thinking on adding Nenio to my party with her replacing either Camellia or Wolfij. But since she is only good for casting spells and nothing else in combat, I fear that she may run out of juice fast at bigger maps(like Market Squire big). In your opinion, at around which caster level pure casters become viable to run full time in a party? Because of limited spell casting at low levels and this reason I like Ember far more than Nenio for example. She can spam her hexes at least if she has nothing better to do. Also Wolfij covered my Grease needs so far(and he hits like a truck because of sneak attack). :) But on the other hand I fear on missing Haste since it is an awesome buff and only Nenio can cast it currently.

  • @cRPGBro

    @cRPGBro

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi there and thank you! In my humble opinion there is not that much to be gained from pure arcane casters (unless the main character) as opposed to the "half" casters. Take Nenio for example, Woljif can already cover most of the best arcane buffs (and if you've noticed they tend to be pretty low level, for some reason the high level arcane buffs don't tend to be that great). As for Haste, Woljif even gets it at level 7! Two levels later than Nenio, but after that he can spam it just fine especially through Abundant Casting. I'd say if you want to go with a pure arcane caster that's not the main character, somewhere around mid level or Chapter 3 because by then they have enough spell slots, some feats to empower their spells through metamagic, a better spell selection and also that is when you can get the Devouring Lust Metamagic rod which highly increases their damage. It should also be when you get Hellfire Ray!

    My issue with them is the somewhat disappointing damage (Mythic/late game Demons have loads of HP) and the save. I think at that point you are far better off casting metamagic versions of lower spells like Sirocco (which also lingers & knocks down) for example instead of being one time only cast. Or casting Stormbolts for huge area, no friendly fire, 20d8 and also Stun on failed save.

    How is 15d6 for boneshatter "pretty great" but 15d6 for fire snake or cone of cold is "low dmg cap"? :D

  • @cRPGBro

    @cRPGBro

    2 жыл бұрын

    Well, first Boneshatter does untyped damage so you don't need Ascendant Element. Second, it also has a positive effect even if the enemy saves for half damage: the enemy gets Fatigued. And because of the way Fatigue & Exhaustion work, if the enemy is hit by the spell again and saves again, they'll now become Exhausted :) Third, because it targets Fortitude instead of Reflex, enemies cannot use Evasion to avoid all the damage. Also, it is a level 4 spell instead of level 5 as the ones you mentioned, so for the cost of a level 5 slot, you could Empower it for even more damage or use other metamagic to increase its potential 😃 But of course, the downside is that it is a single target spell instead of AoE like these level 5 ones.

  • @DJ-yo9oi

    @DJ-yo9oi

    @@cRPGBro Boneshatter is okay, but for DPS casters, I find elemental damage (especially fire) is generally much better than untyped. Both spells are 15D6 on paper, but with 3 draconic bloodlines, Ambrosial Attire..., and Mallander's Insult, Fire Snake caps out at a much higher 15D6 + 60 + 2D6 as an example. We can also easily make enemies vulnerable to fire with Treacherous Flame gloves or Flame Curse for another massive boost to damage. Evasion can be annoying, but I found my character easily beating those saves (might be harder for companions, though).

    Assassin seems pretty disappointing. Poison is the main ability - but the most common and strongest enemies in the game are immune to it. And you can easily have -2 STR or -1 CON without a save on every hit from Advanced Rogue Talents anyways (Crippling Strike and Wearying Strike). Except these are just ability damage effects instead of poison. Death Attack costs a FULL round action and feels useless too. The amount of damage you'll miss out is immense especially considering roguish types are probably dual wielding. As for Sneak Attack, so many other classes already have full sneak attack progression anyways + a bunch of other goodies like the Rogue Talents.

    I just figured out that you can turn the Nd6 of fire spells into Nd6+2N by getting just 1 level of sorcerer crossblooded and picking "Draconic Bloodline Arcana - Red" and "... - Brass", and then even Nd6+3N by also picking "...- Gold" via mythics. Those bloodlines give the special ability "Whenever you cast a spell with fire damage, that spell deals +1 damage per die rolled" and they stack. So a lvl 9 Ember shot Scorching Ray (2 rays) for 2x4d6+13 and it resulted in 31+27 dmg, ~45% of the dmg being from the flat bonuses. I find that pretty neat increase for such a small cost. Another example from the lvl9 Ember, a Burning Arc deals 8d6+24 ! It hit for 47 (currently biggest single hits from Lann and Aru are 73/70).

  • @cRPGBro

    @cRPGBro

    Ember can get an increase in damage indeed through the Draconic Bloodline like Red. I'm just not much of a fan of getting it early, because to be fair, Hellfire Ray is the best spell as far as damage for a single target, but it comes later and relies on high CL for damage, so I'd only bother with multiclassing after you get it to full power.

    Is battering blast a good candidate for demon casters with kalavakus? Maybe a wizard with Death's consonant? You could with quickened spell/rod and aspect of the colloxus use this 3 times per round. You might even go EK for the extra AB and weapon damage (+7 multiplied on crit from weapon specialisation and greater weapon specialisation). You would probably want mythic critical too, and school mastery to achieve 20 caster level in evocation for the 4th battering blast. Alternatively, spell specialisation as a non mythic feat. I believe that elemental specialists convert even force damage to fire (I know the phantasmal killer damage on a failed will be successful fort save is converted for example), and proc mallander's insult and ring of pyromania, and with 4 ranged touch attacks, this would stack up significantly. I would guess the baphomet robes would work as well, though debuffing with the gloves would likely do more. So compared to hellfire rays 45d + 21d6+15 from gear, battering blast could do 20d+ 28d6+20 from gear, but with 4 weapon attacks on top of that. An EK using death's consonant could easily do significantly more than 18d6-5 damage (average of 58 damage) in 4 weapon attacks, so this might be the strongest direct damage caster you can achieve. With Brimorak, I dont know if the extra 4 damage per dice applies to the bonus damage from gear or just the base damage die. If it does, then the bonus would still be 72 more per cast of hellfire ray than per battering blast, and 100 more per cast if not. Still, worst case scenario, the 4 attacks would have to do 158 or more damage on average, which is very achievable. And the spell is 3 levels lower, so you can devote far more spell slots to it with different metamagic combinations, and those combinations will be more powerful. Edit: thinking a little more, using elemental specialist to convert to fire probably wouldnt be the best bet. Instead, use 4 stacks of geniekind to add up to 20d6 divine damage per swing, and you would get up to 4 swings per cast of battering blast. This would clearly outclass even the 4x(7d6+5) damage you could get from stacking bonus damage on fire spells gear, and free up 3 gear slots too. Converting to fire damage definitely breaks geniekind interaction with ele barrage. Again, not sure if brimorak works on ele barrage, but it would be a nice boost if it did, an extra 80 damage per swing or 320 per battering blast cast. It is possible you can do both. The conversion is an instant toggle, and battering blast has a travel time, so if you cast, paused and toggled of the fire conversion before they landed, hopefully the battering blast would still do fire damage as it was cast with the fire damage toggle on, but the geniekind would be triggered when battering blast landed and the weapon attacks occurred, and the elemental conversion would be toggled off by this point. I dont actually know if you toggle of elemental conversion after casting but before the spell lands if it would convert to fire however, and it would be very fiddly regardless.

    I gave Battering Blast with Kalavakus a try but unfortunately it was only proccing the Bull Rush on a single sphere out of all the ones we can fire. On the other hand, that did trigger the free attack and the Bull Rush modifier was +115 (!!!) with my Demon Exploiter Wizard which was really funny. Battering Blast can certainly deal some good damage, but I suppose with Demon you can just go for Hellfire instead at the mid/late game.

    Cross-Blood + 2 Fire Dragons Lineage = (+2dam per dice), add spell specialization and DAM. On level 1 you go as High as 3d4+6 damage, with the potential of dealing 18 damage, having an average of 13,5. As a sorcerer at leve 3, with spell specialization your burning hand already do 5d4+10 AoE damage (Average of 20) At level 4 you can go for burning arc that will be 6d6+12 damage (Average or 33) and will jump to two others enemies for half damage.

    @@tiradentes4525 Personally I prefer the extra flexibility early of a fire dragon line and fire elemental line. The arcana allows you to turn all energy based spells into your preferred element, which of course you can increase the effect of through the Elemental focus feats, and ascendant element mythic ability, and lets face it, for any blaster caster the first mythic ability you are likely going to be taking is ascendant element. Its just too good not to. So given what your first mythic ability is going to be, and how early you are going to be getting it, going a firedragon plus fire elemental may lose a little damage, but more than makes up for it in flexibility. Chain lightning becomes a truly powerful multi target spell if its always converted into your ascended element. In fact I like it so much that I tend to dip Ember into crossblooded sorcerer for a single level as 6th level spells become available. I know most people say wait till level 20 to do that, but at level 13 you can go do Blackwater and pick up Stormlords Resolve, which acts like the Red Salamander ring except for lightning spells including chain lightning and stormbolts. It will affect her AC as Stormlords Resolve are bracers, but lets face it Embers AC is never going to be anything to write home about considering how many of her equipment slots she will be using to increase her evocation and fire damage/difficulty. She will be relying almost entirely on buffs anyway.

    @@cRPGBro No kidding. Early game, Cultist Evokers use it if you have Additional Enemy Behaviours set to On in the difficulty options. It's impossible to get rid of since it checks your Strength MODIFIER, not your total rank, along with a d20. So a Strength 20 character, which gives you +5 modifier, is then checked against a DC of, what, 29 or some shit? Pretty much impossible to succeed a save at that. And the effect lasts for several minutes! What the hell Owlcat! Only way I found to get rid of it is via the Remove Paralysis spell, and you can't use scrolls either because their DC is too low versus the DC that the spell was cast with. Man, fuck Icy Prison.

    @@cRPGBro Thanks. I have never liked the idea of direct-damage arcane caster though, at least not in D&D or Pathfinder where u have spell slots per rest rather than mana... just seems inefficient esp since enemy hit die increase at a faster rate than spell damage die... That's why I agree with what you said in your "best debuff/CC/damage spells" video. However, up to this point, I thought as a debuff/CC caster I would have to take Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot right away, since I would be mostly Greasing and firing my crossbow (and later using Ray spells). Martial weapon proficiency (might not even need that for longspear) and maybe Power Attack seems better!

    I tend to dislike debuffs because they are inefficient. They take an action away in combat and can fail. Buffs can be precast, and work 100% of the time. And although it isn't a spell, elemental ascendancy bear mentioning. Nothing is better than ignoring resistance and immunity, a a dip into elemental specialist can let you convert all elemental damage to one type, even divine spells, great for druids whose spells are all over the place.

  • @cRPGBro

    @cRPGBro

    I personally enjoy both: buffs as you said can be precast so you don't need to spend an action in battle doing it (besides some that are swift or free action like Mark of Justice, Challenge etc). Debuffs on the other hand can matter a lot either by reducing AC/saves or outright shutting them down. The idea is to first use debuffs that always work like Evil Eye, and then use the Crowd Control spells with saves that now have a way higher if not 100% chance of working. And thanks for the elemental tip!
