Thanks, I was having the same issue with the crossed out circle until I hit efi then restarted and selected big sur installer and then it worked.

Great video. Have you tried running your OS on an external SSD? Not sure if my HDD was dying in my late 2012 iMac 21.5in, but it was giving me read/write speeds of around 40MB/s. I just installed Catalina (not gone for Big Sur yet) on a Samsung T7 1TB SSD and run it externally. It's improved performance tenfold (literally!) - no beach ball on the System Prefs - its super zippy!

If anyone is having an issue with installation getting stuck even after multiple restarts. Try checking if csrutil is disabled or not. I rebooted in recovery disabled using csrutil in terminal. Then it worked like charm by clicking the Install Button. Just an add on. Cheers

After u pressed EFI boot, it allowed u to use the Mac OS Big Sur Installer. The EFI Boot was meant to shut ur iMac off, don't know why, but it was written that way, so basically this EFI Boot allowed u to access this Mac OS Big Sur Installer.

wait... did you make a copy of all your files and applications or they just saved natively on your computer?

I would recommend putting in a SSD if you haven’t yet, it makes a huge difference.

why doesnt my password work? It asks for Root Permission right before it erases the drive. I turned off root permission in disk utility and still doesnt work.

You had to EFI boot then it will shut down then you can boot from the usb.

i had issues with the catalina on my imac not sure why it was so slow i had to go back to high sierra this is very helpful i hope dosdued comes with his own

He said that he won’t be making one for Big Sur because most machines that would be “supported” don’t have Metal graphics acceleration support. Only computers from 2012 and onward do, or an older Mac Pro with a Metal-supported graphics card.

@@jwoolery99 oh ok what os needs metal support bc when i was running cat it was so slow now i think it needs a fresh install then work but not sure but it could of been that i was running it via usb via ssd not sure

High Sierra is the last OS that doesn’t completely enforce the Metal API for programs to run. Mojave and Catalina use an OpenGL Fallback kind of mode because the UI is primarily operated in Metal. That’s why for a limited time you could use Mojave and Catalina unofficially. Nowadays it’s not worth it because more apps are using Metal which will just cause more apps in Mojave and Catalina to crash. For basic use cases it’ll be fine but that’s about all you can do with it anymore, so if it was me I’d just stick to High Sierra (Mojave at the newest). It’s just going to run better than Catalina and apps, while older, will work at least.

You can upgrade the gpu to support the newer os versions

I have a late 2012 imac 27inch. It is running macOS Sierra. Can I ugrade to Big Sur direct or do I have to load catelina first?

Using this method, you MUST go to Catalina first. I would recommend going to Catalina anyway and installing any available updates first to make sure your EFI is up to date, especially since you mentioned you are running 10.12 Sierra, if it has not run a newer version of macOS since then, it is very important to do so. Going to Catalina will also upgrade your drive to APFS which is required to install software updates in Catalina's Software Updates preferences pane.

2011 is not recommended for Big Sur, best to stay on High Sierra with those machines because of their problematic graphics. Unless you switched it out with a Metal-supported graphics card, then that’s different.

I am about to do this to a 21.5 late 2012, but i'm also going to be doing an ssd upgrade. I'm hoping that will help with alot of the performance issues that you had.
