hey, great job! Listen I wanted to ask you but if I want to do the same thing as you did, buying the kit to open it, a new processor, new ram and new 1tb ssd on a late 2013 Imac, you say I can do it and if I can you can update latest update?

Even when the internals become broken or obsolete, you can repurpose those old imacs into displays with a conversion logic board. Idk if there's a model already released for this particular model though.

I remember having to work on these when I majored in ad design and eventually went on to do logo design/printing. I'm a PC guy for my needs but these were a treat to work on. Great machines.

I was a PC guy, until I got my work laptop, a MacBook Pro M1. Since then I bought myself a MacBook Air M1 and I can't see myself ever going back to Windows as my main system. I'm thinking about getting a small format PC at some point just to have a Windows machine available when I need it.
Team fortress 2, on a 2012 27’ iMac 😳
Took the quick route, and used an external SSD to replace the internal hard drive. On older systems, the external is fast enough. There's no risk of breaking the iMac during the opening or upgrade process. An external drive is easy to back up, using imaging software; unplug it and pop it into another system.
love this channel; something very comforting about seeing once trashed stuff resurrected and used again
this video is one of the best tutorial on disassemblying imac, with lots of detailed steps. I'll bookmark this video in case I have to repair the imac 27".
one can clearly see why you have so many viewers top notch content. cheers to another 250k!
Good job, Nathan, hope that will be more videos next days. 👍🏻
Theres a quick and dirty method ive done which was to simply stick an ssd to the front of the og hard drive with double sided tape and move the cables over. This way you dont need to fully remove the screen. Theres enough clearance for the imac to be sealed up again without any issues.
Amazing video! Keep up the great work!
Amazing Video Nathan!
I have a 2015 27" 5k, I had to open it to replace a failed drive, I didn't feel like messing with adhesive so I just used clear duct tape to hold the machine together. Makes servicing so much easier 🤣
@psivewri

Not a bad idea at all! The new adhesive will likely be stronger than the original. Let's hope I don't need to open it up again!
great work mate
That was awesome to watch!
Wonderful work 👍
this was great to watch! I watched it on the hoome TV and stereo with a Raspi :D
wow new tools good restore!!!!
Great repair!
I will never be able to do that! Fantastic work.
Amazing stuff old laptops and pc tower can still be used in 2002 love older computer. true legend never forgotten ❤️
That’s awesome! I plan to revive my old 2009 Mac Mini someday. The hard drive and SuperDrive is dead. May swap it with a SATA SSD and maybe a second hard drive and don’t bother with optical drive since those are pretty much obselete.
This is one in a lifetime moment where a sponsor actually helps with my corrupted drive
great work
i got a 27 inch mid 2011 imac, upgraded from 4gb to 12gb ram, the hdd, to a 960gb ssd, honestly runs pretty well (10.12 sierra)
I have one of these which I have installed the apple ssd and a 1tb samsung ssd. Got it like this one with a broken hdd. Really nice bit of kit and much better in use than adding to the e-waste nightmare
YES A UPLOAD
I got a base 2011 iMac 27 inch for $20 at a yard sale with a bad hard drive, bought a 1TB hard drive with thunderbolt, formatted macOS to run off the external hard drive and boom! I got a iMac. It takes about 2 minutes for it to warm up and get going but for KZread videos and using it for my iPod, ds, psp mods it works great! And I’ve brought the drive to friends houses to boot their Mac off of it to mod their stuff.
fantastic job, sir
Thank you for good video :))

Great price, well done!😊
I love your videos, no other channel on youtube goes to the lenghts you go to repair devices.
Some good tips in the video
Great job.
I once received a nasty electric shock when opening a power supply unit, I thought that since it was not connected to wall outlet it was safe to work on. I was wrong. Those big capacitors can hold a significant amount of charge for quite sometime.
Thank you for that Video.
Wow very nice and done
Ver nice Nathan 🙂🙂
I'm still using an 08 iMac running Logic Pro X, and it still works and looks great. It's amazing that a 14 year old desktop can still hold up.
I was worried for a bit that there you be no eucalyptus oil used in the video. Thanks for letting us know about the drive recovery software. I have a 2010 iMac with a damaged hard drive and cd/rw drive which I will get repaired next year along with 3 other iMacs, 2 iAds and hopefully my 2 MacBooks. I don't know if my Ibook can be fixed.
It's always good to see people reusing hardware that has been designed specially so that it can only be thrown away after a couple of years. Keeps the garbage dumps under control... at least for a while.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Finally! I have this one as well but can never find how to videos on it . Mines sees to be working very well at this point.. (Thankfully because I would never be able to do what you just did)! I am wondering if there is a way to use it with a Ipad or laptop as a second monitor?
I have cracked the glass before on one of these trying to open it up without being careful enough. Lesson learned!
Lovely job! and thankfully no big creepy spider sitting on the stand this time... xD
Get this man to 1mil people!
My wife sold hers (identical year model) last year for 300 bucks and it still worked beautifully, except you couldn't update it. Cool to see some of them are still floating around!
I remember in 2013, my campus bought 30 iMac for us to study. and it's beautiful and powerful as well.
Eucalyptus Oil .... hihi, you use it for cooking too? Love your vids, thumbs UP!
Hey Nathan, in the future videos, can you do Bootcamp/Windows 11 on older Intel iMacs?
“I even forgot I had this” Yeh. This is what happens when you collect. I’ve only realized I have certain Macs after more than a decade of forgetting them in a box. 😂
10:20 love that cut 😜
Hi, do you have tutorials on how to make install MAC OS drives and if you have a old powerbook with no password? Thanks for the informative videos! Keep it up!
I'd recommend Monterey via OpenCore Legacy Patcher as this supports Metal
I've upgraded old MacBooks for myself and friends but never an iMac Watching this tempts me to pick up an old iMac and give it a try.
Could you just use Velcro stickers to hold the screen on instead of new double sided tape? Would be easier to access later on.
The Mac boot chime along with the synchronized bird chirps is a soundbyte i didn't know i needed

I have the same mac and still is my main system. thinking on the new 16 pro
5:01 if you need to touch the power supply maybe soldering etc. unplug the mac and press and hold the power button for atleast 40 seconds. it should clear the the leftover electric voltage. unless you need to do not touch that thing
Sorry I'm late, but I love the video!
I just added a new Samsung SSD to my wife's 21.5 Imac. Worth the speedy upgrade. Ifixit is a great resource for the how to as well
Excelente 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
super video
Excellent work as usual, I have one of these iMacs, so it's good to know it can be done. Only problem is it seems SSDs have a limited lifespan, so you might have to go back into that machine again some day… Hopefully not soon!… 🤔

Unless you write hundreds of gigabytes to the drive every day, SSD endurance isn't something you really need to be concerned about.
Every time i see nathan uploading a video i click it immediately and don't care at anything else.
Great video, almost a don't try this at home kind of a deal ! I as wondering if you upgrade the CPU with graphics on the chip and disable the logic board graphics?
@Simulation101YT
Жыл бұрын
The graphics on the CPU back then, was the Intel HD 4000, It was in fact worse than the one on the board (I'm assuming an Nvidia GTX 650-670), and even now, most CPU graphics chips have generally worse performance than that of an official graphics chip. Although the CPU upgrade itself would have been somewhat viable, it would have been more suitable to just keep the graphics chip on.
nice monitor
Best KZreadr
What type of watch do you have? I like it
No wonder people love the 2011 models. That adhesive seems to be a deterrent more so than AiOs are already. I'm Glad the iMac I found in the trash bin was a 2011 model.
I must be the only one who focused on the Keychron K3 rather than the iMac when it was on screen. As for the Mac itself... I am just amazed by how you landed that deal.
Awesome vids you fix many things, now we just gotta fix that haircut then we golden bro 🤣 no hate though keep it up
hey quick question, does the fans go crazy when you add a SATA SSD like the 2011's?
was that a nvme slot I saw at 7:33 ? Just above the usb slots?
I have one of these on my wirkbench - Speakers stopped working ages ago, but a bluetooth speaker continues to make all the noise. Considering its used as a circuit diagram viewing device it does a antastic ob as its role in llife. Tes they are a pig to get into!
3:40 this situation literally happened to me when repairing an imac
What version of MacOS can install on my MacBook? My macbook is a late 2008 macbook.
I would like to see if there is a different way to reseal these as that’s an hassle.
30 years later when the new imac is retro: today we are fixing this old imac from back in the day, it still has an m1 chip, i had one of these back in the day!
Gluing on the display was a bad idea from Apple. I can't see where my 2020 27" iMac is that much faster than the 2013 model it replaced. The biggest improvement that I can see is in the retenia display.
Can u do a detail review on the nvidia NVS 300 gpu?
I see that Todd hazelwood MSR mousepad! This years season wasn’t too good for him.
cool video
I wanna know if I buy I cloud macbook and remove old os and re install new os make its lock again?
My 2012 iMac is still my primary computer. The 27” display with ram and ssd upgrade is good enough for me. Looking to upgrade from Catalina to Ventura via Opencore next year!

Well, if you mainly browse the web and watch video content, a machine like this, even being ten years old, still does the job. That would have been absolutely unthinkable one decade prior. We live in really good times for getting decent usability out of dirt cheap stuff.
Odd question, But what is the name of the watch you were wearing at 3:03?
I have this exact same machine. The fusion drive failed and I bought the iFixit kit to replace it an SSD. Took it all apart, redid the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU, replaced the drive, put it back together...and it doesn't boot. Only one of the 4 diagnostic LED's on the MB lights up. I'm about to take it apart again, clean up and re-paste the CPU and heatsink, but I any other help is appreciated. I only want to get the machine working again to sell it but right now it's junk.
Hey, I have a 2013 iMac that I took the screen off and cant get to boot. Does it boot without bootmedia/os or a hdd of some kind. Is it possible to boot to an external display like a Macbook Pro? Any tips would be a big help
Can I still buy one at a good price you think and where I should look
Lots of hard work! I would have pulled out ALL my hair if I did what you did. I have a 3 TB “fusion” drive that is still working in my 27” iMac. Shortly after I bought the Mac a power interruption scrambled 25% of my data, which was unrepairable with the SSD/HD combination, so I formatted and religiously backed up ever since! Still a great computer even after 10 years.
@psivewri
Жыл бұрын
Oh God I hate fusion drives! Is it possible to use the flash memory on its own? I believe it is physically a different drive on the logic board itself.
@ronkemperful
Жыл бұрын
@@psivewri It is comprised of two separate drives - a small SSD and a slow mechanical HD. Sometimes with a Mac, the two drives can be formatted separately but the SSD is quite small - just a few GBs. The combination, when it works is for the user like a magic trick for the frequently accessed data is stored on the faster SSD giving the illusion that the whole computer is running off an SSD. But because data is spanned over both drives, conventional drive repair software cannot repair the data like a regular drive when there is corruption.
Buenas de verdad que suerte yo aquí en Venezuela deseando tener una así pero los precios son al rededor de 600$ mucha inflación y descontrol de precios excelente video.
when the 2012 imac looks exactly the same as my 2020
I got a 2017 21.5in imac with a 4k display but a basic i5 and 8gbs of ram for like 170 bucks, I plan on upgrading it later on to an i7 and 16gigs for my fam to use
What thermal paste used ?
