When i heard this in Feb 78, just turned 20... opened up mind and heart to new world of possibilities. I had not heard this tune in so long. just yesterday came on a Pandora Metheny station i have while driving through the plains of s/e Colorado back to Denver) ... still fresh, and exciting, and joyous!

I am a progressive Rock guitarist, and i LOVE Pat! He rocks! Met him in 1992 NICEST guy ever! I always consider his music PROGRESSIVE JAZZ. Rather than jazz. Its alot like progressive rock at times! Different parts with different time signatures! Just a melodic master of the guitar!

I too think this is one of the best albums ever made. I consider Pat one of the greatest American composers of all time. I had this album on vinyl and wore it out. And almost 40 years later it can still hold it's own with anything out there. Their's an old saying I'm reminded of. Only quality lasts !!!

Richard Ballard - A lot of PMG compositions are joint affairs with Lyle Mays with Mays arguably being the slightly more dominant influence especially in this style and era of the band. So give Lyle his dues as well.

i was 20 when this came out. Pat was 24. Saw PMG at RPI Field House in Feb 78. Completely changed my view of everything! Saw band again in the fall of 78 in NYC. When the band used to jump off the stage at the end of the shows and come hang out with the audience, I told Pay and Lyle that i was excited i get to grow up listening to them play!! Got the biggest smiles from both!! This is beauty to be shared!

You did mean Pat and Lyle, didn't you? I sure would love to meet them both. I did try to guess in what musical time "The First Circle" was and had my twin sister, Maggie, write it down on a napkin and pass it to Pat. He was thrilled, and said I came the closest to anyone who tried to figure it out. I said 18 8 time. I was off by four; it was 22 8. He got a kick out of it, and I was all the way in the back, and when he mentioned my guess, I stood up. I was shaking I was so nervous. Pat does so much for people's self esteem, especially when he teaches musicians how to improvise.

How delicate is the last 1/3 of this song?! Can't stop listening. 7:00 - 9:15: Soulful, genuinely emotional part. It always gives me goosebumps. 9:16 - end: Piano becomes more intense, followed by the other instruments. I always feel like my mind is out of my head. 9:27 - 9:40: Drums make my heart shake with the rhythm.

Why is it with Pat's music...that you can hear one of his compositions for the first time...and know in your soul that you've already 'felt' it forever? You know where each note is going...before it even gets here. Deja-music? I guess you could say it's 'fun, hearing his music for the first time....again'. I'm not afraid of getting to the end of the internet...or getting to the end of life...I'm afraid of getting to the end of Pat's music.

Believe it or not, I have an answer for you. I watched a video of Pat talking about his playing style and he said, (not verbatim, but close): "When I am playing really good, I am not really thinking about anything. I am just listening. Playing is more about listening than playing. If I play one note and I really hear how that notes fits with what everybody else is playing, then there is a person inside of me that is a fan of me that is a listener. Then I just kind of ask the listener, if you are listening to this, which you are, what would you like to hear next and then I play that. So it really becomes the listening part of me that is the leader of the melodic phrase. I am really just kind of listening".

In DFW we had Q102 and The Zoo, both rock stations in 1978. In 30 minutes of time, you might hear some Pat Metheny, Van Halen's brand-new album, The Police, Kansas, Steely Dan, and Alan Parson's Project. People could actually learn about new music and artists, and it was a remarkable time to hear it. All of those artists were cutting some of their first material.

Para mí este álbum es una Obra Maetra., San Lorenzo, Phase Dance, Jaco, Aprilwind, April Joi uuff! Salvajes!!
