Actually this is something YOU TUBE can find a solution for as it is for sure an old Problem like many problems are.

It's a piece of music I can truly call a masterwork in every shape and form. Furthermore, I would love to know what was on Metheny's mind at all the different transitions, background sounds, and that haunting and breathtaking final chord at 19:56 with the sound of children playing. Truly an extraordinary work

I was riding in a friends car and asked if he had any Pat Metheny to listen to. His response was a bit odd but I pushed for it anyway. “Just one weird and very long one”. Oh, I didn’t even try to explain it to him but I certainly made him sit through it. He focused on the road while my soul was filled with all that is wonderful.

I did not know nana had passed. sigh life is so fleeting. was just thinking about this epic piece the other day. I recall 1981 or so when i really dived into joni, jaco, weather report and PM. even though prog rock had virtually dried up post 70's...the prog jazz and windham hill filled the void. And was this disc along with joni's shadows and light and offramp/travels were probably my fav 4.

Nearly 40 years ago I had the opportunity to interview Pat Metheny after a concert. I asked him about the meaning of the spoken numbers on this track (around 14:47). He said that he’d heard a lot of theories about what they meant, but all of the theories “are a lot more hep than what they really are-and if I told you, it would probably ruin it for you. Do you really want to know?” The other music journalists at the table leaned in. “No,” I said. Pat leaned back and smiled. Those other guys were so pissed. 😊

@@michaelrandall9034 okay, here’s the spoiler, as I found out years later: he was calling out the seconds on the clock in the studio as the second hand swept by. That’s it. (See, not nearly as hip as the theories!) My big regret in that interview was not talking with Lyle, but he was engrossed in a video game (Pac-Man, maybe?) and I didn’t want to bother him. Too bad I missed out on that. But Pat was very cool and down to earth. When I asked his advice for young jazzers, he basically said to go get into a good school and see how you measure up. Probably pretty solid advice.

I had this cassette tape playing in my 1986 Honda Civic hatchback in a field south of Fort Worth playing loud while tracking Halley's Comet in 1986. What a great soundtrack to a once in a lifetime event. Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays were a once in a lifetime collaboration. I saw Lyle Mays at the piano in his senior year concert with the North Texas State University One O'Clock Lab Band in 1975. All the compositions were his except for his arrangement of "So What" by Miles Davis. Brilliant! I was happy when he and Pat Metheny paired up for their stellar career. Lyle is missed; Pat continues to plow fertile soil.

Getting ready for short trip, stopped in store to pick up a cassette to listen to enroute. another fellow browsing, asked him if he suggested any jazz albums? He just handed me this album, and nodded. Driving the Parks highway to Denali Park, fall yellow leaves, pale powder blue Alaska Range in distance, music on, emerged through this portal into Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays otherworld. A magic and deep album, I revisit often, and 35 years later, return to that day like a movie.

I got to see this tour too. sometime in the early eighties at the pavillion theater in highland park, suburb of chicago. A mostly outdoor lawn area surrounding a small pavillion. I've never sat in the pavillion. Too much fun on the lawn. I'll never forget that. Some friends and I had just discovered a source for these funny mushrooms that were bigger than your fist. A few shavings and the world was one huge tapestry. Pat Metheny was the conductor. Lyle Mays spinning atmospheres. Nana Vasconcelos nuanced with foreign meter. Those were days of outdoor concerts, beach parties on Lake Michagan, Long summer nights of adolescent dreamscapes.

I bought the LP As Falls Wichita,So Falls Wichita Falls back in 1981 when it was first released and its one of my most treasured Albums and I eventually bought the CD. I felt so fortunate for this Album to enter into my life. Its an uplifting and equally tragic feeling of love and abandonment all thrown together in such a beautiful Album. They toured the U.K. and I was lucky enough to see them both perform this track amongs others and the title track from the Album...I still have my concert ticket inside the LP. I've beeen a Pat Metheny fan ever since. I found out about the passing of Lyle Mays here in KZread a few years ago. He died aged 66 in Feb 2020 and was the co founder of the The Pat Metheny Group. An incredible Pianist. His synthesizers gave depth and color to the ensemble’s sound. He soloed gracefully on grand piano. And he helped write many staples of the group’s repertoire.

Hi thanks for the comments! I was very surprised about all what did develop here. The Video was more a test because it was blocked. Out of this reason I will repost it soon with a Text and a Video added to it. Because of this all the Comments up to now will be lost. I’m sorry for that! Actually this is something YOU TUBE can find a solution for as it is for sure an old Problem like many problems are. Hope you don’t mind to much and still keep having fun with the music and all what is happening around it. Greetings Hawk the Cat

I do own a copy of this record and think it is the best ever colaboración the late Lye Mays did with Pat Metheny. As another person wrote: a true masterpiece. Hope one day, he will be invited to be a part of the yearly Panama Jazz Festival.
