I have only flown First Class once in my life. 1968, I was in uniform flying from Pensacola, Fa. to San Diego for additional training from there to Viet Nam. A flight attendant asked me where I was headed? I shared with her what was ahead of me. She made no comment, just turned and left. Shortly before takeoff, she returned and informed me i had been upgraded to 1st class. When we landed in LA where I was connecting with a flight to San Diego. As I was leaving the aircraft, one of the other attendants shared with me that the lags who upgraded had lost her little brother just two months prior in the Nam. At 75 years of age, I write this with tears in my eyes. Every time I board a plane I remember the kindness I experienced that July day in 1968.

I returned from Nam in 1967. I was in uniform flying Oakland to Phoenix. Passenger next to me asked to be seated as far away from me as possible. I was reseated in the back row next to the bathroom. After not being served the meal, a stewardess said she would see what was left on other passengers trays. The 10 minutes being cursed at the Oakland Military Terminal, let me know the way things really were. In 2013, I retired and permanently left the US and ungrateful Government and People. As for Vietnam, all I did there was repair Microwave and Tropospheric Radios and Radar. As Sol Surviving Son of a War Wounded WWII Vet, my father dying less than a month after entering the Army, I shouldn't even have been in a combat area.

I joined was not drafted the military because I wanted to serve. My uncle Emmet served as a corps man (Medic) during ww2. He was a kind, soft spoken and extremely humble. Though he never went into just what he went through in combat, you could tell it wasn’t a pleasant experience. It was he who inspired me to join up. Something i have never regretted. 10 years ago my mother passed away and I received all her personal possessions. Included was uncle Emmets stuff. I went through everything. Long story short, I found in his military documents a list of his citations. The man was a medic trying to save lives. For his efforts, on 4 separate occasions, for his actions he was awarded 4 bronze stars. I was stunned. I got to his medals and there were many, I found the bronze star medal with 3 stars indicating he was a 4 time recipient.

@@JackSmith-jj3bi I joined at age 17. I had graduated High School and Community College at 14. My dad besides losing his left leg at the hip and right lung at nearly the end of WWII in Europe also had drug resistant Tuberculosis and was in the VA Hospital in Quarantine From before I was 2. My mother didn't want me so I landed in a orphanage at age 3. Flat out I joined for the education. And that I got. While in Vietnam I completed my Bachelor's Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison by mail. I left Vietnam soon after my 20th birthday as a Sergeant First Class. Simply because General Harold K. Johnson saw potential in me. I remained in the Army Reserves another 29 years (total 32) years. I was commissioned as a Captain after turning age 23 and by then had a Masters Degree in Physics. At age 29 I had a Doctorate. I resigned in 1997 as a Colonel 0-6. I was wounded twice in South America during Operation Condor.. And in 1972 had my arm crushed while working on a Minuteman II-B Missile in the silo. !! operations and 3 bone grafts, titanium rods, plates and screws. Doctor told me I likely would be able to only lift a cup of coffee. I know the limits of my arm, but can bench press 110 kilos. Nothing much horizontal though. When my dad died the only notice I got was a SS Check for $99 as Survivor. Since Retiring in 2013, I have teach Higher Math and Chemistry Pro Bono at the National Universities of Panama, Peru and Bolivia, a few years ago the National University of Ecuador as well. Mt wife is a high level University Administrator and Professor so I am prohibited from teaching in Costa Rica. Other than a Purple Heart for losing his leg and lung apparently my dad got nothing else. Life for me sucked from the beginning. But I have made the most of it especially in retirement where I have the money and time to help others donating to Children's Charities in 8 countries. Living good and seeing the world.

I used to fly a lot for business and was always in first class. Every time a person in uniform came onboard I changed seats with them. On one flight three soldiers fresh from the Middle East came onboard. I looked at the guy next to me and asked if he would consider changing seats, he was all for it. The guy behind me heard us talking and jumped at the opportunity to give something back to these brave men. We gladly crowded in to their seats while they enjoyed perks of flying 1st class.

About a decade ago I heard a phrase 'Birthday Project'. The project was do to a random act of kindness for every year you have lived. It should be anonymous and to a random stranger. I have done this for many years and have received much personal pleasure. Sometimes the acts are small things. Sometimes larger. One of the best was when I lived in a smaller community and the price of the matinee move tickets was $5. I printed up little notes that send Random Acts of Kindness. Then paper clipped a note to each of about 40 $5 bills. Gave them to the cashier at the movie theater and went on my way. About a month later I went to the theater and the cashier looked at me strangely and said, "You're Him". I said what do you mean. She explained that the weekend I did my thing, others were inspired and donated to the event. She explained that it was the best weekend of the staffs work experience and that most of the patrons had fun either receiving or giving. Loved how others joined in. Now at 60 I spend months doing my Birthday Project. I still have an amazing time coming up with Random Acts of Kindness. 🙂

If it is not anonymous it is not a gift, nor charity. Instead it is personal advertising or marketing, given with the expectation of the reward of publicity and effusive gratitude in return. This false charity’s main purpose it to raise the social position of the donor in the eyes of others of high social position, and to legitimate the flaunting of their relative wealth to those of us with lesser means. It is a monetary transaction just like any other, and if it does not generate the demanded return in publicity and attention, next time it will go elsewhere with the same expectations. Has anyone else ever wondered, when watching PBS, how many of the high rollers with their names emblazoned on the tv screen would still be making donations if their names were no longer put up for public display? The low rollers are never thanked publicly and effusively, and that is exactly how it should be. Pity the wealthy for whom that is not enough return, that their addiction to the acclaim, gratitude, fame, approval and plain old attention is all they have.

One stormy night in Seattle I was driving to the grocery store and stopped to help a man as his car was broken down in the middle of the street. After pushing it off to the shoulder he said he was an Uber eats driver and had a delivery. I told him to grab the food, as we had a delivery to make. After the delivery I drove him home. He wanted to pay me, but I told him the only thing he owed me is to help out the next person who needs it. Total strangers have helped me in the past and I was grateful for the opportunity to pay it forward.

I once moved a woman and her child to first class. She and her child were not sitting together and I could see the mother was exhausted. She had called me a racist but I knew that wasn’t true. When I asked her to gather her bags because I had 2 seats together in first class. She was so surprised. At the end of the flight she stopped me to apologize and thanked me. Her appreciation was thanks enough. We both felt good in the end. Niceness makes everyone feel good.

It's these kinds of actions that will save our Vets. Even when the politics were wrong, we still fought for you that's our job. This story is exceptional and rare. Sometimes it's the little things that mean the most. Most all of us followed each and every order to the letter. Ending our time of service with Honor. Yet we are crucified in court rooms, feared in public. If we got busted up. Well almost no one gives a sh!t. Stop and think, who exactly gave you the right to be that stupid? Did you step up? We don't ask for much when we come home. Some courts have used the excuse of training. Bu11$h!t! shut your mouth because they did it to me! Truth, I wasn't trained to leave a foe alive, I did that day. And still paid the price for it. Even today I'm called crazy. Today I don't have time for people. Your own blood survives a tour through modern day hell. Not one of you considers where you would be without them. Before all else when you see us could you please use the word "Sir." Yeah, It's that simple. Thanks for your service, Still catches me off guard at times. I took an oath even today I will stand by it. supported by years of stubborn duty, I've had the means to go rouge the whole time, never did. never will. Please take care of the Men and Woman who have taken this Oath.

I can’t speak for fellow vets, but as for me I will say, sitting in a cargo plane in a seat made of nylon webbing is first class travel compared to some of the things we occasionally have the opportunity to do. It’s all a matter of perspective. If the C-130 is flying back to the US, carrying you home, there are no words to describe the feeling of comfort. Any day the sun comes up in the East, and nobody’s shooting at you, is a good day. TTWKYK, thank you for the opportunity to gain this perspective; and thank you to the kind gentleman who shared his comfortable seat with someone who had similar perspective. For those of you who are so inclined, follow the man’s example. A small act of kindness to a random stranger is a beautiful thing.

A few years ago, I flew from Orlando to Minneapolis nearly weekly for roughly ten years. Being a Vietnam combat vet, I personally know the rigors and hardships our soldiers endure. That being said, whenever I saw a soldier in uniform on my flight, I would ask the flight attendant of my wish to give up my first class seat (and meal) in return for the soldiers seat. I only hoped they didn’t have the dreaded middle seat! They were always reluctant to do so, but I made it quite clear the issue was not up for discussion. With one exception, they were extremely gratified. One soldier was coming home from the Middle East to MSP for his mother’s funeral. I always felt that if I could make a soldier’s life better, even for three hours it was my pleasure. The flight attendants would always go ga-ga when this happened.

I myself have had to deal with alot of hateful comments and worry on if I would be attacked but not too long ago when I was near my breaking point a girl about 16 tops said something too me and having one headphone in I couldn't hear her and stopped turned to face her and despite my slight attitude and angry voice when I asked her what she said she with no fear or regret in her voice said I looked cool after i said thank you and we went on our way again. Her tone of honesty and kindness helped me realize I needed help and I went and got it. I wish I knew the kid so I could thank her again by giving her a thank you gift for making my day better and making me realize not everyone has something bad to say about me. It makes me happy too know there are kids who for whatever reason choose kindness and send out good energy in a world where there is so little.

Ive given a very pregnant women my seat in first class when i flew to las vegas a few years ago. She wasxdef struggling to sit in her seat and i couldnt let her be that way for the trip. I asked the flight attendant and she arranged it. The woman was extremely grateful and thanked me several times. I saw her at baggage claim with her husband and he thanked me also. It costs nothing to be a gentleman and be kind to others. Yes the economy seat wasnt as comfortable as the first class seat but i made a pregnant womans day a little bit better.

When I heard that the story hit the social media, I thought it would end as follows: "Someone recognized the generous and kind man helping that military officer, it was the kind man's boss. When the generous man returned to work, he found out that he was fired for supporting/rewarding the US military that was helping the Israeli military commit Genocide on the Palestinians." That's the way the story would end in 2024.

I frequently buy coffee or a drink for Soldiers and Vets. No matter the Country. Saying thanks for your service is meaningless. It takes a gift to thank. But giving up a Business Class Seat costing three times that of Economy would be more thanks than I can offer During the American Civil War it was common for opposing forces to greet each other before the fight. Even in WWII Allied Forces would celebrate Christmas together with the Germans

This story is a good example of how we as a nation and world should be living. But sadly it’s not a story of the true human nature of this day and age. But with GODS grace and mercy through salvation in CHRIST JESUS we can. Turn to HIM and trust in HIS plan for a better life today and for eternity.

Only kindness I was shown was when I was med-evac out of Viet Nam to Japan in1969 and came from Japan into California. From California, myself and one other guy, on stretchers, were put into a Lear Jet that a patriot business man used to transport wounded to hospitals in the US. Imagine what the cost would be to transport two guys to hospitals in a Lear jet with pilot and copilot.

These days I never try to get a better price from a trades person in fact my wife and I always round up their bill by 10%. People remember this when it comes to service . You will be surprised how people move heaven and earth to get to work for you. I feel people need encouragement in this sad world. A guy came to clean my furniture. He quoted a reasonable price, I paid cash. I said please count it . He said there is more than I quoted . I said I feel you are worth more than your quote.

Could enjoy these more if the same comments were not repeated over and over until you finally get to the gist of the message… I know he was full of gratitude, I know the seat was cramped, I know he appreciated the sacrifice the man made in giving up his seat… you only have to tell me once. Telling me 3 or 4 times doesn’t make it more so.
