FUNDY ROSE is a ferry currently owned by the Government of Canada. This vessel has been in service with Bay Ferries since 2015, providing a vital connection between Saint John, New Brunswick, and Digby, Nova Scotia. The FUNDY ROSE took over from the PRINCESS OF ACADIA, continuing the legacy of maritime service in the region.
The history of the MV FUNDY ROSE extends beyond Canadian waters. Originally known as the BLUE STAR ITHAKI, this ship was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for Greek shipowner Strintzis Lines. Completed in May 2000, the vessel was operated by Blue Star linesand used for routes from Piraeus, Greece, to the islands of Syros, Tinos, and Mykonos.
In 2014, the ship was sold to the Canadian government and rechristened as the FUNDY ROSE. The name was chosen in tribute to both the Bay of Fundy, where the ship now operates, and Rose Fortune, a woman who escaped slavery and found a new life in Annapolis Royal near Digby in the 1780s.
FUNDY ROSE measures 123.8 metres in length, with a beam of 18.9 metres. It operates using four Wärtsilä NSD 9L32 engines, giving it a service speed of 24 knots. While initially designed to carry approximately 1,500 passengers, the ship has been reconfigured for its Canadian service and can now accommodate 1,317 passengers. With this blend of history and functionality, the FUNDY ROSE is a significant component of the region's maritime infrastructure.

    It's actually really disturbing to see the current state of the Fundy Rose for us, Greeks. It used to be flawless when it was in Greece, without rust, for sure. I travelled on Blue Star Ithaki more than 30 times and they haven't changed almost anything in the interior, according to the footage. The big question is, though, isn't it required by Canadian Law to keep the vessel to a presentable condition? Doesn't anyone care? Ithaki was one of the most iconic vessels in Greece and it wasn't that old when it was sold.

    I've been on this ferry and will again soon. Not as big it's 2 predecessors and you really feel it walking around. The trip across the bay has always been fun, that one time it was also a bit scary. The drive out from Digby to Brier Island is also scenically one of the best I've done.

    Very nice coverage! Fundy Rose has a big bellow. I like her interior, still clean and well maintained. Good timing as well because it was a clear day during your trip, most of the time Saint John, NB is hammered with fog. I love your videos most specially the ferries that plies NB and neighboring provinces.

Happy watching! 🚢🌊🌞📹

    Thank you very much! BC has definitely been one of my dream destinations for years and is high on my wish list. For me as a German, however, it unfortunately takes a lot of time (and also money) to travel there, which is why such long-distance trips are rarely realistic at the moment. I have just experienced Canada now (I could already go there again, I really love it with all my heart), which is why I suspect it won't happen until 2024 or the following years. But I will travel to BC, that's for sure!

    Nice work as usual Carsten. Certainly the turning circle of that RAM you had wasn’t the best. Is the weather there particularly harsh? Many of the Canadian ferries seem to be rather rusty looking…. Oh and finally a cheaper meal onboard! Still getting over the Moby prices. Haha

  • @JustFerries

    @JustFerries

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you for the kind words, Mitchell! Yes, the turning circle of that RAM was a bit of a challenge. As for the weather, it can be quite harsh in this region, which might explain the appearance of some of the ferries. The saltwater and weather conditions can certainly take their toll on the vessels. And about the meal onboard - yes, it's always a pleasant surprise to find a good meal that doesn't break the bank! The Moby prices are indeed something to remember. Thanks again for watching and sharing your thoughts.

    Was the video aboard the FUNDY ROSE shot off season? The public rooms looked quite empty. How many nautical miles is the crossing from Saint John to Digby and how long does it take?

  • @JustFerries

    @JustFerries

    This ferry trip took place on 27 May 2023. The times (e.g. departure, arrival) can be seen in the overlays in the video, here the departure time was 09:10 (local time) and the arrival 11:16. The distance is approximately 70 km. Why does it look so empty? Because I always try to film in such a way that only a few (better nobody) can be seen in the pictures. Either I wait until the area is (mostly) empty or I board very early so that I am at the locations before most of the others.

    It's incredible to see such strong interest, especially from Greece, which makes up 15.5% of the views since the upload (it is the biggest group of viewers). The connection with the FUNDY ROSE's previous life as BLUE STAR ITHAKI certainly seems to have resonated with Greek viewers. While I was on board, I strongly thought of my Greek audience and their connection to this vessel.
