@ind0ctr1n3 The original actor that was replaced was Jean-Claude Van Damme, working in a very different predator design. The Predator was redesigned and Kevin Peter Hall was brought in to fill the suit. Director John McTiernan gave him the cameo as the pilot as he felt he had to let Hall get his face in the film after sweating in the suit without complaint for weeks during filming.

It's a minor detail in many ways, but I also like the ending of this movie. In most movies with big, tough action heroes, they just put on sunglasses and walk away, still cool and unaffected by the events that went down. But here, on that helicopter ride home, you can see Dutch genuinely fatigued and traumatized, just processing everything internally, and grieving for his fallen men/friends. Just an empty, tired man. It adds a sense of realism to the whole thing.

And I love this comment. And yet, in the end, Dutch wasn't defeated (and you do get the idea he'll survive this trauma) and you know he is going to pass on his knowledge of the Predator to the appropriate people. Things on Earth just changed massively, whether the military/govt keeps it a secret or not. I think some in the comments below are overthinking the effect (or at least the intention) of this movie. I don't think it's an antiwar per-se. It does seem to be saying there are worse things in the Universe than man and that we are lucky we fight each other, and not, say , these Predators. So yeah... War is hell. Esp war against extra-terrestrial hunters :)

Yes I always got the impression that the close up on his face was PTSD setting in. This was the mission in which he lost everyone. Contrast that with the action firefight at the beginning where he is making one liners after a couple of kills, and nonchalantly lights up a victory cigar. By the end Dutch has survived, but is broken. And it took an Alien to finally humble the great Arnold!

I totally agree about Billy and the Predator fight. He is a supporting character with a lot of backstory that is covered in the Predator novelization. It’s been over 30 years but I do remember this: Billy is only part Native American and doesn’t really believe in a lot of his ancestral mysticism. He doesn’t know he is descended from a long line of medicine men. But when the Predator something outside of our normal world shows up all of his latent mystic senses go into overdrive. That’s why he spends the entire movie kinda in a fog. The pouch on his neck was given to him by his grandfather to protect him in battle. Once again he didn’t really believe in this stuff. But he kept his promise to always wear it. Ironically you see in his last stand he takes it off and wraps it around his blade. I guess to make sure that he can get at least one good stab in before he died.

It scared the one that slew him, it warned his honorable opponent that bested him (which would be fitting with the Yautja's (Predator) character) and finally it conveyed his small victory of denying him the prize of a corpse and technology to prove their existence, not to mention avoid making the human civilization advance from the Predator's own failure.

"Cowboys and Aliens" is similarly undermined by its title. If it had been called simply "Absolution" after the town (and certain plot elements) it would open as basically a regular western with only Jake's curious wristband giving a clue that anything extraordinary awaits. Though from what I understand, the graphic novel that it's adapted from is far wackier and suits the silly title.

18:06 That was a really moving and heartfelt monologue by Bill Duke. He doesn't get enough credit for his acting in that scene. All the characters are so well done that I wouldn't have minded a prequel that showed some of their backstories. 28:45 Originally, Dutch was supposed to beat the Predator when they fought hand-to-hand, but it was Arnold who said that wouldn't make any sense. He said "He's a monster. I'm just a man," so it was rewritten with the Predator kicking Dutch's butt and Dutch having to outsmart it to survive. There weren't a lot 1980's action stars whose egos would have let themselves definitively lose a fight for the sake of a better story. "Predator 2" isn't as good as the original, but I still think it's very good. "Predators" is just okay and pretty forgettable. The Alien/Predator crossovers are quite disappointing but watchable if you've got nothing else to do. "The Predator" is not good. Your reactions are great, so watching you react to even a bad movie would be interesting.

This movie was in production hell. They needed a rewrite half way through shooting the movie, that's when they brought in Shane Black. Because he was writing the movie as they filmed, they cast him as Hawkins so he could be on set while writing. One night, in the hotel, Black was trying to come up with the ending of the movie. He had planned out this big cat and mouse fight sequence, but he couldn't figure out how Arnold was going to kill the Predator. After a few hours of suffering from writer's block, Black decided to take a break and watch some tv. He sat back and watched some Looney Toons, and there he got his inspiration for the ending. He killed off the Predator with a Wile E. Coyote gag. 🤣

At 7'2" plus the costume Hall made a very imposing creature. Actually Jean Claude Van Damme was hired to play the creature but was unhappy with the role and so he dropped out or was fired. So with a redesigned costume Hall was chosen to play the Predator. In the late 1980s/early 1990s there were a slew of tie-in books that expanded the concepts of the Predators and their culture. Due to us always seeing the Predators from human perspective in the movies most of it may not be canon. The Predators are a highly advanced space faring race that dominated all of the species on their planet and pretty much wherever they have gone. They view the universe as one big set piece of Darwinism - beat or be beaten, eat or be eaten. For them the hunt isn’t just for sport. For their young it’s a right of passage. For their culture at large it’s a way to reconnect with their ancient past. They see other species in terms of meat - soft or hard. A soft meat species is one easy to kill while a hard meat specie is one that is difficult to kill. Humans if memory serves me are considered soft. With this in mind I view the final square up with Arnold this way. From the Predators POV it wasn’t a macho/chest thumping thing to fight him with basic weapons it was a sign of respect. Arnold was clearly the alpha of the group. So the Predator killed all of the betas despite their attempts to stop it. Now with everyone else gone the Predator would now give Arnold somewhat of a fair shot at a fight. It was probably surprised as heck to finally encounter a soft human tough enough and crafty enough to survive. Hence if asking “What the hell are you?” The next movie is definitely worth it and adds to some of the things I’ve mentioned.

Predators, or Yautja as their race is known, are very similar to Aztecs when it comes to their kills. It isn't just about "the thrill of the kill" as you described, it's also the idea of the more kills you make, the more prestige you gain in their society. Most of their fallen opponents they just skin and leave the bodies hanging, but if their defeated opponent put up a really good fight, they "honor" that hunt by ripping out the skull and spinal column and keeping that as a trophy. However, they also have a policy of "never allow yourself to be captured, or our technology to fall into the wrong hands", which is why they will often program their wrist computer to self-destruct if they are defeated.
