Alanda: "Please don't let it be a child." Everyone watching: "Um, about that."

The chief’s scar seems to be from having his appendix removed. He’s with two guys telling these badass shark stories and getting these battle scars and all he has is a “wimpy” scar from an operation. So he decides not to say anything. It’s a nice detail that adds some depth to an already awesome character.

"Can somebody please wait their turn to speak?!" hehe that's Spielberg's charming signature; to have overlapping dialogues... I really like how it adds to the realism in his movies... 🙂

Several decades after the filming of Tiburón (1975), Lee Fierro, who plays Mrs. Kintner, walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich". She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago. The owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They had not seen each other since the original movie shoot. This is one of my favorite stories, sadly the actress passed away last year due to covid.

Indeed. Stephen Speilberg once mentioned that "I read the book, and by the end I was rooting for the shark to eat everyone." That's one of the things he changed for the adaptation.

Robert Shaw's monologue about the U.S.S. Indianapolis is legendary. The cadence of the delivery made it ever scarier. Shaw ended up taking the script for that scene and rejigging it after two others had a go of it. It's even scarier when you look up video interviews with real survivors of that incident and you can see it still effects them

@Mike Cappello To be fair, I don't think most realize it is based on a factual event lol. They just assume it's part of the story. But I love how it perfectly encapsulates Quint and forms the basis for every decision he makes in the movie. Also understated is the reaction to when Quint says what the tattoo was. The subtle grasp of the arm to let Hooper know it's not a joke, and Hooper goes from giggling to dead serious in about half a second. Which is foreboding in and of itself. Because if you don't know what he's about to say, unless you know some WW2 history, you know instantly it won't be anything good

Yeah I remembered the name U.S.S. Indianapolis from school but I definitely thought they added the parts about the shark attacks to give the character clearer motivation/depth of knowledge. When I was reading about it after I finished editing I was... aghast. I mean absolutely horrific. I can't imagine that something like that would ever stop affecting a person.

“At first I thought he was self-assured, but now I think it’s a death wish.” I can’t express the pleasure of enjoying a movie with someone who gets the character beats and where the movie is going and is there for it. This was a wonderful reaction. And this is my favorite film, so I am obviously prejudiced in its favor and picky about reactions to it. I loved this. Thank you.

"Are those flares or comets?" Heh. Stephen Spielberg often comments about how lucky he was with that shot. They'd just set up to get that nighttime shot of the Orca (that's the name of Quint's boat) floating in the moonlight when two shooting stars flashed in the sky while they were filming. Million to one odds, but it does make for an even more beautiful shot.

The scene with Brody's son copying him is super-cute and perfectly done, with the Mom looking on and everything, but it's also important plotwise: Brody sees that the only way his son will learn to do the right thing is if Brody stands up and does the right thing.

That part of the scene was not scripted. The two were sitting at the table between takes and the little kid just started doing that. So Spielberg rolled the camera and it became part of the movie.

Me watching this 25 years ago: "It's unrealistic that they are arguing about the beaches staying open just for businesses when people are dying." Me watching this in 2020+: "Oh..."

the Jaws attraction at both US Universal parks was amazing and it's a travesty that they've been removed- there is still one in Universal Japan that my husband and I have been saving up for a trip to- the saving is going verrrry slowly and ofc there's the other problem plaguing us all right now. We just hope the attraction is still there by the time we're able to go (in 10, 15 years)- they seem to have less problems with it breaking down there than they did here- not sure if it's because they're maintaining it better or they had better technology when it was built.

The mayor is still the mayor in the second movie. The moral of the story? LOCAL ELECTIONS ARE IMPORTANT PEOPLE

This was also the first Hollywood film actually filmed at sea, which created all kinds of logistical problems. The only scenes filmed in a studio tank were the underwater shots.

There's actually a fantastic reference to this in Godzilla vs King Ghidorah. In one scene, they've traveled back to the 40s during WW2, before Godzilla became Godzilla. As the time travelling ship flies away, the U.S. navy men off the coast see it as a shooting star. One of them turns to the guy who noticed it and says "Maybe you can tell your children about this one day, Private Spielberg."

"After he ate that roast like a Tic Tac!" This woman is perfection, much like this movie. Awesome and highly entertaining reaction. And off topic, you are gorgeous. I don't have any recommendations right now, but I'll definitely be watching your channel.

@@jamesalexander5623 Also, in the book, Matt Hooper sleeps with Brody’s wife. He also dies when he’s in the shark cage. And the shark doesn’t get blown up by Brody, he just dies (from exhaustion, I guess). Brody was all ready to get chomped on, but the shark just starts spiraling down into the ocean & dies.

The real villain in the movie is the mayor's fashion sense.

I think you are the only reactor so far that reacted and didn’t cut out Quint’s monologue about the USS Indianapolis and the sharks. Which is my favorite part of this film lol.

I love how they start to respect Quint with his USS Indianapolis story . How can you not the man is a survivor.

ive seen a lot of youtube jaws watch-alongs, this is probably my favorite, I didnt feel like it was someone hamming it up for the camera or playing dumb, it was like watching it with a friend.

The best reaction I've watched to date. Jaws was well researched for the times. The glaring things they overlooked is the sharks eyes never rolled back/skin went across in attack and in the cage strike where the shark swam backwards. Sharks can't do that, obviously, sharks don't seek out humans but it's a movie, the psychological horror is what's so succesful about it

See I never liked how the lady slapped Brody and blamed him. Since the impression I always got was that the Mayor could override him as well as potentially fire him. So he was trying to keep everyone safe while tiptoeing around the mayor since if he got fired then he couldn't do anything. its been awhile since I've seen the movie though. She should of been slapping the crap out of the mayor for not caring about anything other than the tourism.

Mrs. Kitner seemed like a martinet. One of those moms who doesn't let things go, has little chill, and holds grudges. The woman put out a $3,000 bounty on a fish to the entire Northeast not caring about the chaos it would cause. This is a woman who has no sense of humor about anything and doesn't spare bystanders.

Tazkar - You're right of course about slapping the mayor. The problem is that the common people don't know this. If chief Brody screams on their local news, "Shark attack. Stay off the beach," then he is fired by his superiors, in this case the mayor. And the mayor just stands there and watches someone else take the fall for his f#@$ up. This is how all high level government operates in my opinion. ALL.

yeah I do understand him being in a tough position. My issue is that the biggest problem plaguing the police department was some kids practicing karate on a picket fence 🥴. He took an oath to protect these people and the one time the town has an actual issue he doesn't do anything. We see him fold after one conversation on the ferry. and we don't even get a scene of him going door to door or issuing a safety warning while keeping the beach open. I can only assume it's cause he really believed them when they said it wasn't a shark. He must've thought it was his fear of water getting him worked up for no reason, cause the alternative is just sad. But no matter what THE MAYOR DEF SHOULDA CAUGHT HANDS. FROM EVERYBODY 🤣

My impression was always that he was worried about the consequences of if he did scream to high heaven that there was a shark and ended up being wrong.(You are right that he probably should of done something like even just warning people to keep their eyes open and be safe and such.) Not saying that absolves him, but I can definitely understand that insecurity especially since he was the new guy on the block so to speak.

@@AlandaParker Something from the book that didn’t make it into the movie is that Amity is _heavily_ mobbed up - the mayor was up to his eyeballs in debt to the mob, who don’t give a crap there’s a shark eating the tourists, they’re still going to take their cut. But even without that, beach towns like Amity make all their money on Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day - miss any one of those and you can’t pay your bills over the winter. And finally, Martin’s an outsider - he has exactly as much authority as the town lets him have. Should he have acted more forcefully? Sure. Would it have made a practical difference? Probably not.

My generation (Gen X) grew up believing sharks were constantly looking to kill you- in the ocean, in the lake, in a pool, bathtub- basically anything bigger than a toilet, there was an evil, horrible shark waiting to swim up and eat you- because this movie put that fear into us. It's great to hear you using facts to refute things in the movie, now that so much more is known about their behavior and their importance to the ocean: "why would the shark do her like that? She was just floating around; they don't just attack!"

I just cracked up at the "Sounds like she's getting a text!" line! Great reaction Alanda.

You saw a shooting star in those 2 shots. When Spielberg was a little boy, his dad took him to watch a meteor shower and he was fascinated with the cosmic ever since. In Jaws, he was lucky enough to capture 2 shooting stars and said he thinks it was his dad giving him those shots. He later went on to have a shooting star icon for his production company.

This is one of the most stressful movies out there. I don't know if it's a horror movie exactly, but it's close. I personally can't imagine how they could have done it any better.

"I'm also giving y'all utmost-humidity Diana Ross vibes." This is one of my favorite reactor channels, and this JAWS reaction is a great example why -- funny commentary, great delivery, sincere reactions (humorous and otherwise). And congrats on the 10k subs, keep going -- you're doing great!

One of the greatest things in this movie is its soundtrack! John Williams created a masterpiece! Period! Great reaction too!

JAWS is the greatest movie ever made. Steven Spielberg was only 26 when he directed it. The production was one of the most difficult in film history. In fact Spielberg says that for years afterwards he would have recurring nightmares that he was back on Martha's Vineyard trying to get the film finished.

Based on a true story about a bull shark attacks in NJ. Sharks name is Bruce, same as in Disney/Pixar's finding Nemo. License plate is same in Deep Blue Sea.

It was fun watching your reaction! Quick story...I took my girlfriend to see this film the summer it came out. We were teenagers at the time. I remember wearing a tee shirt and shorts because it was so hot. By the time the film finished, my girlfriend had shredded my arm and my leg to the point I felt I was a victim from the film. And yes, there was blood. Fun times.

Anyone who'd recommend SPHERE over THE ABYSS deserves to walk home in -10 degree wind chill soaking wet. Granted, that might be a 2-minute walk depending on where he is, but it would still suck.

@@Theomite I would completely agree with both that plan and the reasoning, just trying to think on my toes and maybe tripped, but unfortunately it will never be... I'm a Florida Man and am afraid that if we ever got a wind-chill like that here it would signal end of the world. I'm so sorry.

In April 2019 I was lucky enough to see _Jaws_ on the big screen in a theatre that was normally used for stage productions, but all of John Williams’ music was played by a live Czech orchestra. It was an absolutely fantastic experience and it was really interesting that you could see on the conductor’s screen that he had a countdown to the next musical cue etc.

Several other films that John Williams scored (including the likes of _Raiders of the Lost Ark,_ _Jurassic Park_ and some of the _Star Wars_ films) have also been known to get this same treatment, and a similar thing has happened with _Back to the Future,_ in which all of Alan Silvestri’s music was played by the live orchestra while the film itself was shown on a screen. Be warned that admission prices for such events are likely to be more expensive than that of a regular cinema ticket.

The reporter on the beach was played by the author of the book the film is based on. They wrote the film as they filmed it. They had no script when filming started. HIGHLY recommend the Making of Jaws documentary from the 25yr or 30yr anniversary DVD release. It is FULLY worth checking out. It's so good they've actually turned it into a Broadway musical. I've watched the Making of almost as much as I've watched the actual movie! (it's another go-to comfort film...saw it at the drive-in when I was 5, back in like, '81 or so has been and always will be a favorite...).

This is one of these movies that had written cinema-history^^ True classic.

I accidentally traumatized myself when I was 5 years old at my cottage (a group of people were watching and I wanted to join because I was the youngest and always left out). I snuck down to watch a little bit and with the way I positioned myself in the staircase, I could see the tv but my parents and the rest of the group couldn’t see me. The scene I saw as a 5 year old baby, was when the little boy on the floatie gets attacked for the first time. I was shook to my core as an innocent child. Anyway, I have thalassophobia BUT this movie is one of my all time favourites somehow. My mom and I watch it a few times a year. Still get goosebumps when we see the shark roll onto the boy.

That brief British accent tho... Ok! We need more of that! LoL

There's a reason these are enduring classics. They're f-ing awesome movies. Don't be afraid to go further back in time either. Recently a lot of reactors have taken on movies like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, The Wizard of Oz, etc.

The mayor was such a pivotal character that every single Jaws ripoff had to have that same character in them.

it's on my list but I don't know anything about it. I didn't even know people died 😂. Now I'm extra scared to watch it. but I hear it's phenomenal

It wasn't about him willing to sacrifice his own kids. It was just that bit of proof to show he was so blinded by the idea that there was no way a shark was in those waters, that he had no problem letting his own kids go swimming because he genuinely believed if he ignored it, it would not be true. So that does not make him a total monster. But don't get me started about "Believing something so badly for it to be true, you ignore the fact." This is 2021 don't forget.

26:25 - Quint's story about the Indianapolis really happened. Though, most of the initial survivors died from exposure and dehydration. Several were killed by sharks. Steven Spielberg wanted the follow up to be a prequel about the Indianapolis featuring a young Quint, but the studio opted for a more traditional sequel. The sequel was underrated and features one of the most recognized tag lines in film history. "Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water"

Please let me beat you down with a flood of nostalgia, etc. You have no idea how much of an awakening it was seeing this in the theater as a 7 year old. It was obviously something special, the beginning of an entire era in cinema that lived on (in my opinion) until E.T. (or maybe as long as Indiana Jones’ Last Crusade) what most call the "summer blockbusters" but to me is simply the Spielberg/Lucas/Williams (composer) golden era. Anyway, yes, the film kinda scared me, but I was much more simply mesmerized at the beauty, score, effects, characters, shear wonder of it all. It would not be too much to say it changed me, especially in combination with the rest of the films in that golden era. I both feel grateful for my luck to have been born at just the right time and feel bad for those who missed it. Anyway, my memory of seeing this actual movie is clear as if it was yesterday. You must realize the hype was everywhere, and this is when hype never let you down (like it nearly always does now), back then it was organic and real, nowadays it’s used artificially to try to capture what went on in those days of cinema. When we actually went, my older brothers sat elsewhere in the theater (as typical) and I was stuck between my parents, my mom convinced it was too much for me. This was my first experience with a movie where the audience reactions were real, loud, uncontrollable, and strong, which really added to the experience, but subconsciously made the movie (at least for me) a little less scary 'cause it reminded me it was just a movie and that even adults were being kinda tricked into being scared, so I felt a little grown up and able to master my fear. My mom seemed to handle it less well, she kept trying to cover my eyes, and I shoved it away telling her to quit it, especially with Quint’s demise, I was utterly spellbound. When Jaws was blown up, I laughed and bounced and cheered. And of course, we begged them to let us see it again, and dad liked to lead us on that there was a chance we would (to make himself and himself alone laugh, 'cause nobody else did) before revealing the idea is absurd. It was the first film that had the merch tie-in as we all think of it today, and I loved my Jaws toy-game, but this also established my love of listening to movie soundtracks. I insisted my parents let me have the "record", but I was stupidly convinced it was like a kid’s book and record, even though they kept trying to get through my thick skull it was just the music. When I got it and discovered they were right, I was not disappointed at all, I not only loved it, I was learning that the music in a movie is a huge chunk of why one even loves movies in the first place, it’s the heart of it. So, I ended up collecting them, especially John Williams, sometimes for a movie I hadn’t even seen (while too young for rated R’s for example).

Jaws hits different after 2020. Idiots would run right into the shark's mouth these days.

@@trhansen3244 yup, sharks are personal for him with the clear factor being the indianapolis story, he dosent want help at all because he will "Never put a life jacket on again" he wants to be the reaper for the sharks out there due to his ptsd. radioing someone is is like an insult and blow to the heart

As mentioned the impression I got was that it was never about losing some (or all) of the reward money. Quint wants to kill every shark in the ocean for the rest of his days. This is the Mother of All Sharks and no one is going to come between him and his personal vendetta. He does have a moment when he asks Hooper about what his equipment can do. This is the one moment of vulnerability he shows. He's totally out of ideas and concedes that he genuinely needs help or they are ALL finished.

@@matthewdunham1689 I dunno--- I totally get what you're saying, and it could be the case. Quint always struck me as "obsessed madman" rather than "money hungry." I was going to mention the Coast Guard too (but you beat me to it) - in that he wouldn't let some Coast Guard upstart blast Bruce out of the water and steal his thunder. I suppose he might also find there to be "less honor" in riddling a shark with bullets rather than the old fashion way of a harpoon gun... Although he does resort to his M1... Which shows his deepening desperation. For me it's just that he doesn't mention the money once after they are underway.

33:36 They purposely shot the movie in a place where the water was still pretty shallow even far out from the shore. They had two underwater shark rigs on wheels that actually roll on the seabed under the water. Ironically this movie ended up becoming one of the best suspense movies ever on accident. The rigs kept getting water in them and malfunctioning, so they didn't get anywhere near as many shots of the actual shark as they wanted. They had to employ other tactics to make the audience feel the presence of the shark. The music. The barrels. Even just the fin poking above the surface, which was another rig that they would pull behind a boat. All these things that were fixes because the shark kept malfunctioning ended up actually making the movie better. This is also the first summer blockbuster ever and the first movie about sharks ever.

Fun fact: the crew actually had a name for the shark and they called him Bruce 😂😂😂 But joking aside I always love this film. I love how we don’t see him right away. They build up the story and our hero character which we end up liking and root for them when the scary part show up *just like the orginal psycho and the bird*

Interesting: I just assumed he had a bullet wound from being a cop, somewhere Rougher...hence, taking the job in Amity. Makes sense, in retrospect. That said: In the early 1970s, wouldn't an appendectomy scar be much Bigger ?

I think you're ready for "The Mist" now. It stars Thomas Jane who plays Miller in The Expanse and quite a few of the Walking Dead cast.

I do remember going to movie theater seeing Jaws when it originally came out. I was very young child who was laughing throughout the movie over people's screams then they were jumping up throwing their drinks & food all over theater room. Luckily, my interest was focus on people in movie theater more than Jaws scary scenes. So , I remember Jaws as comedy movie instead of scary movie. I was vocal cheering for Jaws to get the mayor but sadly my wish didn't happen. LOL , I was only one in my family who still had my drink and popcorn to eat while everyone else were wearing their drink and food. Brody has possible PSTD from almost death during his childhood drowning. This is why he has fear issue with ocean.

You are missing the joke with the beer can. Back when this movie was made beer cans and soda cans were made with MORE metal or out of steel. You could make stilts out of the cans. To be able to crush one with one hand you had to have true hand strength.

15:55 The moment I was waiting for! I was not disappointed!

I’ve been shark fishing as a kid and caught a Mako, that strap to the rod and to the chair is real. They strapped me in after my friends dad hooked it and had me reel it in. I still have its Jaws. But yep that’s how they do it.
