Pass Labs INT-25 Vs. Sugden A21SE (and which one did I choose?)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I compare 2 very similar (yet different) pure class A integrated amplifiers - The American Pass Labs INT-25 and the British Sugden A21SE.
If I could only keep one, which would it be?

    I returned to this video as my interest for the Sugden A21 returned and I have to say, no I wasn't waiting for your decision. I was absolutely happy with you describing the pros and cons of each amplifier and talking about all the other little details. What a wonderful calm lecture about HiFi gear. Thank you so much.

It's actually the same price here in the U.S. I payed $4000 with a custom color faceplate. Five months for the build and shipping. What a bargain! Lovely video. I'd also add that the A21SE is hand-built in Yorkshire by a small family firm with only a handful of employees. That's important to me personally - as is the fact that they have their own service departmant who will get me out of trouble should a fault develop. Not that they ever seem to ...

    I really liked your post. Yes, this gentleman is a first-class audio reviewer. I agree, he is centered in his reasoning and is a fabulous communicator. He has a wonderful speaking voice too. I could listen to him speak all day. Mostly, I love his videos because he literally sits down to talk to us...his listeners..and he treats us with respect He is here to inform us..not to yell or lecture us. He and Tarun AKA, 'The British Audiophile' are the best of the best audio reviewers on KZread IMHO. Both are first-class individuals with a quiet confidence. I really appreciate what both of these men do.. the time they spend preparing and what they've done for our hobby in general. They've elevated the discussion about the audio components that they review.

    Great video! What a fantastic comparison (I always find comparison vids the most useful). I love these two brands, and was ecstatic to see this as a suggested vid. I'm not surprised at all by what you've stated. I wish I could play in that ballpark, though... My pockets aren't that deep, unfortunately. I currently own an old A48b that has been modified with point to point wiring, increased capacitance, a much better switch, bypassed balance and mono sections, etc etc.. It sounds awesome when warmed up; I'm so curious how an A21 would perform by comparison (I've only heard them in stores, so no direct experience/ comparison so far). Hope to find out one day. If this Sugden A21se beat out the Pass INT25 - even by a touch, it must be seriously impressive.

I will pair it with a Pass Preamplifier and a well regarded pair of tower speakers from Qln of Sweden. I'm hoping this will be a pleasant sounding combination. 🙏 Fingers crossed. Excellent review, Harley! I've been looking around for a review like this. I just bought my first class A amplifier---the Sugden A21 Signature. I got a good deal on it since the dealer was willing to sell me his demo (in the states). I absolutely love it!!! Wow---the soundstage is spot on and the richness and warmness is addictive. I'm not sure if there's a big difference in the sound from the Signature as compared to the SE. I did upgrade the power cord but didn't hear much of a difference. BUT, the iFi Nova power cord has noise reduction properties so I'm not sure if it will reduce any hiss. I haven't tried that experiment. But I will say that I don't need to go pass the 10 o'clock position for loudness!! I've tried the amp with Tekton Lore Reference (>95db efficient) and Dynaudio Special 40s (around 87db) and the A21 had no issues with power. Thank you!

    Good video sir! I've had both the A21SE Signature and the INT-25. The INT-25 is still with me. The volume control, the ability to mute, the soundstage and the inner detail to me is what made the INT-25 a keeper. The Sugden is fantastic with an external Parasound phono pre-amp, but the gain coming from my Naim ND5-XS2 was too much and if the volume went past 10 o'clock you were in ear bleed territory. I'm only streaming these days or playing music from my NAS. I absolutely loved my A21 btw, and the price difference is not chump change. Speakers are Klipsch Cornwall IV's and the Pass mates beautifully with them.

    Great comparison video. I was in the market for an integrated class A amp last year and considered both of these options. In the end I cam across a Luxman 590AXII, less than 6 months old, for about the same price as a new Sugden. The Luxman has even more features than the Sugden, including a fairly handy phono stage (although I don't use it anymore) and weighs more than the Pass. I still remain interested in comparisons with the Sugden and Pass so found your video very interesting. Other reviewers have said the Pass is a little warmer in sound and the Luxman is more neutral. I have never found anyone compare the Luxman to the Sugden.

    Very interesting and a well presented comparison between the two amplifiers. I have a Sugden A21SE. I would like to comment upon the input sensitivity of this amplifier, which is not an ideal match for the 2v RMS output of most digital sources. I have a small listening room and even with output of my Qutest DAC set to the lowest 1v RMS setting the volume control only requires to be around 9 O'clock for maximum level. Adding the Rothwell attenuators to the source end, the maximum volume control position increases to between 11 and 12, which I find ideal, and has no detectable effect to the sound quality. I did try the A21 amplifier before the A21 SE. Interestingly the A21 SE has an input sensitivity of 110 mv while the input sensitivity of the A21 is 170 mv allowing the volume control to have noticeable wider range. Both amplifiers are extremely good value. I went for the larger output of the A21 to future proof my speaker choice. One attribute I particularly like about the A21 SE is that musical climaxes throw full weight with minimum compression and still excellent separation.

    Hi David, how much attenuation did you choose?

  • @David-jm8wt

    @David-jm8wt

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Philip. On my A21 SE with no attenuation the optimum listening level the volume control was 9-10 O'clock, with 10 db attenuation it was 11-12 O'clock and with 20db attenuation it was 2-3 O'clock. I decided that 10 db was about right as this allowed more headroom for the amplifier. Rothwell attenuators are directional and available in 2 types, Type 1 for fitting at the amplifier input and type 2 are for fitting at the source component output. I chose type 2 as there was more room behind my DAC than my Amplifier to accommodate the additional length of the connections. They are completely undetectactable in use.

I love how you do the videos and it’s a pleasure to watch and listen to you. Recently I bought a second hand new integrated amp, a Musical Fidelity X-T100 than I match with my Kef C55… I now is a modest gear, but in my case, the MF has done the Kef got a new life, they sound better than ever and I am enjoying a lot with them. Thank you Vincente, I am so pleased my videos connect with you. Very kind feedback. With regards budgets, when I review something I never make excuses for price. The piece of equipment either sounds good, or it doesn’t. It is either well made, or it isn’t. There were decades when I could not afford even moderately priced equipment, so (like you) I bought classic secondhand gear that had ‘gone out of fashion’ and then I kept it. Love to have an INT25 but the problem is I have no excuse to let go my faithful X150. It’s a perfect mate to my B&W 805D4. Another wonderful video Harley. You’re a natural in front of the camera. It makes no sense but there’s something that’s just ‘right’ about British gear pairing with British gear. But we also can’t ignore the significant price difference. At least in the U.K., the Sugden is a relative bargain compared with the Pass Labs. I’m a Pass Labs owner (XA30.5 amplifier) but wholeheartedly support your conclusion.

    Thanks Harley! That was really interesting. I think I may have been your first customer to pair the INT-25 with the Sibelius? In any case, it makes perfect sense why the Sugden would win out, at half the price and sounding almost the same as you say. Nevertheless, I love the INT-25 - you didn't mention it, but the optical volume dial continues to be a pleasure to use. However, I find the INT-25 remote to be nice looking, sure, but the IR signal just doesn't work all that well. It's just as well, because I pretty much only use it for volume, and in general I'd rather use the dial for the feel of it.

You might look in to installing a different logarithmic potentiometer in the Sugden. I'm sure they'd work with you on that. Then it could be useful all the way up to 11 with less noise maybe? Hello Harley, I truly enjoyed this comparison review. I owned and loved my A21 MKII and in 2021 I moved over to a their ANV50. You might want to give the ANV50 a try as it might close the gap between your A21 and INT-25. My only complain with my Sugden and I’m nitpicking is the input selector switch that is not totally silent (you get bleed through from the adjacent input) if both are in use. The remote can be twitchy / sensitive in operation from time to time. Thank you, Brian

    It seems paradoxical to me to refer to either of these amplifiers as "expensive". In 1972 a close friend purchased the A21 and it has been in continuous use ever since. I have no idea what it cost back then but today you can purchase an A21 for $AU5,000. That's $AU100 per annum, or less than the cost of a cup of coffee in a café per week.

    This can be applied to most things but can also have exceptions. I collect vintage watches and the excuse to lay out large sums on say a Rolex is that fifty years from now whilst cheaper watches will have fallen by the roadside the Rolex will still be going strong frankly is trot! If well looked after ( and the Rolex has to be equally well looked after!) even the most humble quartz or mechanical watch approaching fifty will still work well, keep time well and look good. My humble vintage Timex watches work just as well today as my similar age Air King does. I bet a much cheaper Rotel or Marantz will still be working well fifty years from now, especially with modern caps! But it is true to buy the best you can afford still just for owner pride and feeling, everything is emotion after all and I do think psychologically it makes a difference, though I love both and admire my little four quid Timex still looking great and working well after fifty years the Rolex still feels a little more special knowing the parts are of higher quality even though practically I know from fact and experience that does not matter!

  • @PearlAcoustics

    Hi, we have one way because we believe they have certain advantages. We can produce a loudspeaker that sounds completely natural, has a full frequency range from very low to high, and can transmit incredible detail. Three way speakers are different and can sometimes go louder. Each has its own purpose. The best way to discover this is to hear them for yourself. 😉

    @@adrianbeck1654 thank you for your kind words. Of course our loudspeakers do not require sub-woofers, as they already go down to 38hz very easily. Many sub-woofers are designed in a reflex type system. But I am not sure if I totally understand your suggested solution.

    Thanks for your very kind appreciation. With regards to the Sugden’s hum and hiss, I hope I did not worry you? that’s never going to be an issue, especially when playing music. I only mentioned it because the Pass was absolutely silent, in comparison. So no, sitting in your chair 2-3 meters back, even in the quietest of rooms at 9 or 10 o’clock. You should not hear a thing.

    I agree with Harley about too much gain. The volume pot should traverse most of its range before clipping (2-3 o'clock). I also agree that low level steady noise isn't bothersome because the brain quickly filters it out.

    Thanks Chaun. Indeed I could, the problem with recording amplifiers in a listening room is that the quality at playback, after KZread compression is rather average. The other problem is that microphones cannot easily capture the difference in soundstage. I will consider it in future.

    I would like to purchase the Galion TS120se but without being able to demo it or having the option to return the amplifier; i cannot afford the risk otherwise it would be at the very top of my list. Recently rewatched your Sugden A21se v Pass Labs Int 25 comparison since my dream amp was the Pass. However the £7k price tag is beyond my budget. I do believe my better half would have my head on a platter, if i opted to pay that price tag. How does the Sugden A21se compare to the Galion Ts120se? How is the Galion better than the Sugden and vice versa? My preferred sound based on my amps and speakers at home are based on a full bodied, dynamic sound. I would give up a bit of transparency in the presentation if i can feel the music. I will most likely buy the Naim Supernait 3 used and decide on the Sugden v Galion as a followup purchase in 2024. Any advise would be well received and appreciated. In relatikn to the Sugden vs Galion.

    Hi, I believe you can return the Galion if you are not happy with it? However, it’s tricky to compare the Galion and the A21SE. For the Sibelius loudspeakers, my preference is the Sugden by a whisker. Mostly because of soundstage, and a bit more umph in the bass. But you really would have to listen to them to compare. If you contact us via our website we might be able to find someone near you who has demo possibilities. No promises

    @PearlAcoustics Hi, thank you for your reply. If Thomas accepts returns or if a demonstration can be arranged, that would alleviate any apprehension I may have in regard to any future purchase. The Galion is at the very top of my preferred amplifiers for 2024, but as of right now, my plan is to most likely purchase a used Naim Supernait 3 before committing to either the Galion or Sugden.

    Well, I've been wrestling with this a little bit. As a convert to Class A/SE (coming from Naim, via a Pass Labs Aleph 3), this is a very real choice for me, speakers being ProAc DB1s in a fairly small room. The Pass is very expensive in the UK (£8K?), and this seems to be a clear view that ultimately the Sugden is just as good if not better. The other contenders in this space are the Colin Wonfor designs, but they are not easy to get hold of, and reviews/dems seems non existent.

    Could a RCA attenuator solve the gain issue on the sugden?

  • @PearlAcoustics

    @PearlAcoustics

    Absolutely. But in fact, it’s not really a ‘problem’ I was more making a comment. Attenuators make sense, especially when balancing the inputs if differing source components. But this where I like the addition of devices like the Lyngdorf TDAI, one can make these adjustments totally in the digital domain.
