    How long should the explanation of the topic sentence in the detail sentence be in academic writings?

  • @EnglishUnits

    @EnglishUnits

    4 жыл бұрын

    I'd personally aim for about 5 - 8 sentences per paragraph in an academic paper, using more when needed. I'd avoid going over 10, but some feel more is fine. This link from the University of Wisconsin explains and gives several examples in various academic disciplines: writing.wisc.edu/handbook/process/paragraphing/ Here is one more explanation from the University of Southern California--notice the red statement about length at the bottom of the page: libguides.usc.edu/writingguide/paragraph

    Most schools require MLA format for citations. This website has detailed instructions: owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_style_introduction.html It's possible that your school requires APA, though this format is much less common: owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_style_introduction.html

    Hello, this is an opinion essay. We know this because the title and main idea isn't a fact, but an opinion. The writer explains his or her opinion, plus reasons why he or she feels that way.

    What if we want to write a lengthy essay of about 2500 to 3000 words? How can we add reasons there when we have a lot of points to write on?

  • @EnglishUnits

    @EnglishUnits

    For that, there are a few options. Instead of three reasons, you could have three areas under which your reasons fall. So, for example, look at this thesis statement: Walking is the best exercise because it's healthy, convenient, and helpful for positive thinking. The area of "healthy" might involve two reasons (so two paragraphs). Same for the area of "convenient" and "positive thinking." Each area could also only have one reason, two, or three. The number of reasons in each area don't have to be equal, as one might be more important or involve more details than the other areas. The main goal is to state up front the areas or reasons you'll be discussing but keep it somewhat general in the thesis statement, since it's just an introduction to the reasons (or areas) you'll discuss - and shouldn't be overly detailed.
