    I can't thank you enough for this explanation! You literally make me more excited about writing, but I have just one big broblem which is lack of vocabulary in academic English. What should I do in this case, dear professor?

  • @LearnAcademicEnglish

    @LearnAcademicEnglish

    Ай бұрын

    Great question! I don’t think you should worry about using academic vocabulary in your writing too much because the most important thing with writing is that you have a good, interesting argument with strong ideas to support your argument, and the organization of your writing is clear. That means a clearly organized essay with clear sentences. Using academic vocabulary is just a bonus, and sometimes people try to hard to use fancy vocabulary, which can make their writing sound strange. The best way to improve your academic vocabulary is to read and to learn the academic word list. Do you know about the academic word list? You can Google it and find it online. Those are the most common words that are used in academic English.

    Good question. Definition essays can be tricky. Hopefully you have already brainstormed ideas and made an outline to help you see your overall organization. Now, look at the ideas that you will talk about in your body paragraphs. What is the overall idea? For example, do you explain a word in different ways? Do you show that the word is difficult to define? You can make a thesis based on that: While X is an important concept, it can be difficult to define. or X can be defined by looking at it from three different perspectives. Hopefully those examples give you some ideas of how to proceed. Good luck!

    I don't understand your last question, but the second sentence is not correct. In most cases, we don't use an article with a gerund.

    How do I begin to write an assignment?

  • @LearnAcademicEnglish

    @LearnAcademicEnglish

    9 ай бұрын

    Good question! Sometimes getting started is the hardest part. The first step is to take the question or assignment that your teacher gave you and sit down with a piece of paper. Brainstorm ideas. Write down every idea that you have for at least 10 minutes. Here's a video about that: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qGuur6WIo6iohZs.html After that, look at the ideas and think about how you can organize them into paragraphs. Remember that the most important thing is to answer the question that your teacher gave you. After you know what ideas you will take about, you need to make a thesis statement and start writing your paragraphs. Remember that all your paragraphs must be connected to your thesis statement. I hope that helps. Good luck! ❤

    👍👍........ good evening ma'am, I call upon you the following sentences be explained. "Get/have+object+ing" means make someone or something start. I will get you to finish this project/I will have you finish this project. Should I write this sentence like this I will get/have you finishing this project , Are both fine? As far as I am concerned sometimes these are interchangeable. Let's take another example 2) I got you to pay my money/I had you pay my money if it's written like this I got/had you paying my money. In one word I would like to say to you where I utilise get+obj+to+v1/have+obj+bare infinitive, at the same place can I use get/have+object+ing?? Native speakers use this structure a lot (get/have+object+ing). Thank thee.

    get/have+object+ing is not correct in the examples that you mentioned. I have a video about causative verbs and passive causative: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mnWoxsqaoLe1k7Q.html and kzread.info/dash/bejne/c41l2Lihc93Uepc.html

""Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over but had me believing it was always something that I have done."" Why is "had+object+ing" used in that sentence by that singer?? The song name is "somebody that I used to know sung by gotye ft kimbra.

    @@LearnAcademicEnglish 👍👍 okay ma'am. Some days ago,I searched on Google. Google says sometimes you can use "have+object+ing" where you use "have+object+bare infinitive". There is no difference about meanings. Another definition is when something that was happening, is happening, will be happening or something is continuous at that time "have+object+ing" can be used. I guess that's why it's used like that or sometimes native speakers use informal English. Barring that if you search in Cambridge English dictionary, it shows that both "get+object+ing" and "get+object+infinitive" have similar meanings.

  • @LearnAcademicEnglish

    Good question! I'm not an expert on this topic, but my students write a research essay about this every semester. Most of the money comes from federal funds (the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development) with special funds that are designed specifically to target that issue. You can think that it comes from taxpayers, but of course it's not that simple because sometimes money will be diverted from one source to another, so taxes don't have to go up to pay for homeless shelters.

I didn't know that discussing women working or women choosing their mate (instead of their parents choosing) was feminist...or maybe it's 1965...?
