Partition of India and the forgotten question of Baluchistan | Tarek Fatah | TEDxRGNUL

While India is known to have taken birth in 1947 as a modern state, the civilisational ethos of India has survived for ages. Mr. Fatah proposes the need to develop a grand narrative of the Indian civilisation that extends beyond the geographical boundaries of the Indian Territory. Narrating the horror of the continuing conflict in Baluchistan, Tarek Fatah supports the cause of Baloch nationalists to be liberated from the control of Pakistan.
Writer, Broadcaster, a Secular and Liberal Activist. Tarek Fatah is a scholar par excellence with command over a range of subjects.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I hope Amir Khan is listening. His name "Amir" is Turkish/ Arabic. May be it is time to change it to something like "Amar" that means Immortal in Sanskrit! After all, Megawati Sukarnaputri, ex-President of Indonesia, is a Sunni Muslim. She however proudly carries her heritage with her everywhere!

I'm an Indian Bengali from Kolkata. My maternal grandparents migrated from Dhaka to West Bengal in 1954. Although Bangladesh is an Islamic Republic, still I'd say that the Bengali culture is very much preserved in that nation unlike Pakistan, that only runs in the name of religion and no culture of its own

Unfortunately we had the English rulers (I hate to say British since in my belief the Scottish, Irish and Welsh people did not have any significant part in ruling India even though they benefited by the loot) not only looted and destroyed our people they sew discard among our citizenry promoting hatred. We all fell victim. We need many Tarek Fatehs to remind us of what India is.

@@arpanmalakar11 Unfortunately your selection of Tamil friends is not representative of Indian Tamils. I like other Tamils do not like Hindi imposition however it is done. India is land of diversity and there are elements that want to make it a single religion, single language nation. I oppose that. But Indian unity is vital for me and for other Indians. Also they have not educated the people in the Hindi belt in the North and consequently they breed profusely increasing their population while the South has reducing population due to higher education and development. Now they want to use that to change the composition in the Parliament and also subtly they introduce Hindi across India. I oppose that also. But the India with all its diversity is a grand one and should be protected by educating all Indians and preserving all our languages allowing them to flourish. I do not want to see Mumbai/Poone repeated across India with every one speaking Hindi on the streets and not the local languages.

Indians should stop seeing India as the 1947 70 year state and realise the 7000 year of continuing civilisation . Rise up together as a civilisation instead of being a shy 70 year old state. Stand up for what we were once. The hub of innovation , the hub of knowledge and the land of self liberation. This is the land of the Dharma and whether people accept or not it has Dharma which has kept us alive otherwise like the Egyptians, Assyrians, Mesopotamian, our culture would have been extinct.

Lady Bug issue is more complicated, why do you need muslim leaders ? as a lot of muslims in india are migrant afghans, iranians and few arabs, who have forgotten their cultural, ethnic, linguistic identity and are stuck with only religious identity. a Malayali has Keralite identity and also a religious identity (muslim, christian, hindu). till the pathan, iranian, uzbek, tajik, etc people of India are not given back/reminded their identity, they will keep on creating issue by smashing the only identity they recognize...religious !

Started watching this talk as an Indian slowly getting pissed. A Pakistani lecturing me from a high moral ground? The bloody cheek right !!! But the perception changed. This was like listening to an anguished forefather from 200 years ago gently cajoling me to look beyond the narrow confines of borders, hate and the petty pandering of the politicians who have the same vested interests as the British who successfully implemented and profiteered from the "DIVIDE AND RULE" policy. RESPECT SIR!!! The pain and genuineness in your voice is palpable and hope people across borders hear you. I for one sure has.

I was there. His talk was fascinating! He provided a newer (and better) perspective on the people of Indian subcontinent and shattered all preconceived notions. What I saw in him was a person who was genuine. Earlier I used to think that he was a bit too harsh on Pakistan, but in a later meeting on the same day he expressed his views equally criticizing India. According to him, we should move towards better systems which uphold the principles of equality, humanity, freedom and socialism, and that we should be taking inspiration from the western world in trying to implement better systems here. He condemned implementation of older systems, and I remember his one example, 'If you think that the times of the Sultans and Rajahs (of Sharia and other law systems) were perfect, the reality is that they were very brutal, lawless, corrupt and autocratic, and that you could be publicly executed for even minor crimes. We need to move on to better systems for the subcontinent.' I've heard him say repeatedly that we've got to rise up from making laws on the basis of Geeta/Quran and rationally 'move on'. I read his book 'Chasing a Mirage - Tragic Illusion of an Islamic State' a week prior to hearing his TEDx talk and it was enlightening. All my misconceptions regarding Islam and Muslims were thrashed and I understood the difference between Islamists and 'People of Islam'. Peace!
