Just recently found yours and Steve's channel, so realise this challenge is a few years old now. Love the fact you chose something completely unexpected. Very informative and entertaining. I love how the board is so neat and labelled. Great fault finding and pleased it was just the one zener diode. This phone reminds me of when I used to take apart my grandma's spare phone and goodness knows what else etc as a child. I definitely had the fix it bug early on. Haha. Who'd have thought 30+ years later I'd be watching someone on a portable device repair an 80s phone. Excellent. I look forward to catching up with more of yours and Steve's videos. Ha, ha...I still can't fix all Switches either. I got lucky on the one I bought for this challenge. #5 was a risk too. You've done really well in this competition!

Something you may have missed is that the diode was actually showing a dead short. Very generally, these diodes should be 0.5v one way, and open circuit the other. The 0.04v you seen was essentially a short. Zeners used in this configuration will shunt a voltage spike over it's rating (18v) to ground to protect the remainder of the circuit. With this shorted, everything was being pulled to ground (earth), hence the dead phone. Great find and good fix. I'm rooting for your win!

Back in the 1970's while I was in the US Army stationed down at Fort Bliss Texas, we installed some underground cable for our field problems. I hooked them up to a simple SB-22 Switchboard, a small board for battalion size units. The reason for the connection to the base central office was to receive calls from HQ while on field problems (Armored Cavalry you know) Well the old man wanted to be able to call back to the base from time to time but we didn't have any dial type phones, only field phones that connected to the SB, and the SB had no dial function, made only for field use. So what I did was to hook the CW Key from the Radio Teletype Van up to the board, then when they gave me a number, I could tap it out on the code key. Worked like a charm, and we had simple dial up in the desert miles from the base.

For those who are interested in using old pulse phones on lines that don't support it, there is a converter you can put in line to convert line pulses to DTMF tones.

Yessssss, great video. This is properly satisfying diagnostics, there is no better feeling than finding one tiny component that is causing all the problems. I've watched all the videos in this series, and I have a feeling even though this is your cheapest item, it was the most satisfying to fix. Great job dude!

Nice job! I'm pretty clever but I don't know if I could have pulled this off at the circuit board level. That component tester you have is a gem. Never boring my friend. Problem solving is the fine art of using logic and the process of elimination.

Cracking vid Vince....keep em coming lad and i never knew i needed that phone in my swanky flat.....till now ;-)

I purchased one of those little parts testers a few years ago. I once assembled an oscilloscope kit using just that device to identify the proper resistors instead of trying to work out their value using the band codes, which my aging eyes have such a hard time distinguishing (VA says I have cataracts but not bad enough to remove yet) The little solid state scope is still working just fine, as is the parts identifier. I keep it in a sturdy cardboard box that a small knife came in from a roadside shop in Oatman Arizona ghost town.

I remember our first touch tone telephone circa 1980-82. I remember speed dialing on rotary phones by riding the dial back as fast as possible. Hahaha!

Not sure if somebody already wrote this but as long the Brexit isn't fully fulfilled and the UK is part of the EU you don't need the global shipping program for any EU country. Just send it via regular DHL or any parcel service you like. No customs necessary for shipping within the EU zone.

Excellent repair =D I suspected a diode or transistor - lucky it wasn't one of the ICs! TBH I used to fix a lot of phones when I was younger and Zener diodes were often the cause of failure - spike on the line etc.

Yea used to be a very common failure on early push button phones I fixed loads of them in the past, doesn't take much of a spike to pop them. good fix that and quite an unusual phone. you should try restoring an old dial phone, those are fun to do. I have a 1940's GEC pyramid phone as my main telephone.

@@Jayoldstuff1 Diodes used to be the major cause of the early flat screen TV's as well. My daughter managed a motel that had dozens of the monsters, one of the maintenance men knew which diodes to check and kept the tv's in working order.

man....i'm from brazil and i love the way that you try to solve the issues... i would like to ask you to do more "mechanic" stuff... like the last video related with the RC car... it was simply amazing. love your videos and how you always try different things...

Good job Vince I really enjoyed watching you repair that item, I bet you got a great deal of self satisfaction from bringing that old telephone back to life. It's a shame about the cost of the diode, I remember back in the nineties you could find little independant electronics shops that would sell electronic components like that for about 30p.

As someone who cares about the little things, I appreciate your attention to detail. Things like untangling the phone cable, cleaning up the surfaces and what not are nice to see. Hopefully you're selling these things as refurbished, as I bet these are generally in better condition than most used items you'd come across.

For the phone cord, wind it around a pen or something similar and use hair drier to heat it up a bit, that will make it stiff in that position when it cools down

Was not expecting this at all, maybe job lot of mobile phones, perhaps Apollo 13s faulty parts, 😂. Again great fix and good luck. UK for the win.

Hi Vince, shorted zener diode that happens thay put them in for surge protection. I used to test units long ago. Still good job.

I admire your perseverance Vince. You could have saved a lot of time by checking the dc power to the ICs - which would have been missing. The zener diode gives 18v dc from the incoming line dc voltage and presumably a voltage regulator for the lower voltages to the ICs.

I was a telephone engineer with BT in the 80's but could not help you with this as when the plug system came in we no longer repaired the phones. Any problem we just unplugged the broken phone and plug in a new one. Job done. Use to be a great job back in the day. All changed now and glad I left after 15 years.

Were you a customer service engineer? I was with them late 90s early 2000s. We also just used to remove the old phone and leave a cheapo unit and get them to order a replacement. From BT's point of view the phones were not worth the time spending on them to repair unfortunately. The job had great aspects and some great engineers but also some really bad points that made the job at times unbearable :-)

"customer service engineer"....Thats was what they decided to call us when they decided to change everything and we got the grey vans with the reflective trumpeter...befor that we were just telephone engineers. did a 3 year apprenticeship including college to work in a exchange only to finish the 3 years and be chucked out on the streets as they didnt need us as they were all going digital and getting rid of the relay strouger units. So did quite a few years as a internal (house) engineer and then everyone got multi skilled which meant you did inside and outside opening joints etc. Liked the job but then they offererd voluntary redundency (and the job was going downhill) for about 3 years and every one I had worked with for years had gone so took it as well and brought my kids up whilst the wife went back to work. I always find it funny when you have the yellow and blue jumper wire out for testing. Now I have a full time job selling on eBay....sometime just as bad as BT.

Haha, the yellow/blue jumper wire, I love that stuff. Funny but I did the same thing but around a decade later, BT then eBay while doing school runs etc. I can agree with eBay being as stressful at times. Posting on the run up to Christmas and all the delayed packages with countless messages of 'where is my item' :-)

Yet another repair, never took a old telephone apart, so was interesting to see what was in it, luckily nice easy fix in the end, and looks like more than double the profit so far, awful stuff about the global shipping program, don't make sense, I understand voltage differences etc, anyway see what happens on the USA side this Friday, then get complete challenge final result, going to be interesting, well done again, really love watching these, been interesting, informative and fun and also frustrating all in one. 😀

For future reference if you are not aware,you can clean the stains and yellowing of the plastic with denture tablets,alka seltzer tablets will work also,but find denture tablets work better.For more aggressive stains soaking in alcohol can work wonders as well.Cheers,really enjoy your videos.Watching from Canada.

Some of them do fetch a lot of money, I dipped my toe in that market to get the iconic 70s model that computer phone icons look like in the 80s and the cheapest I could get was $25 with some months spent searching. I was going to gut it for a project but decided the shell was too old for it so it became decor, can still use it to mockup a shell of equal scale.

I like the attention you pay to cleaning your items and getting them looking as good as they can. Steve on the other hand I think is accustomed to getting his repairs out the door quickly and doesn't put in the same effort. When you think about it. You might be the last person to look inside that phone. Its usefulness as an actual phone has a pretty short clock on it, as pulse dialling analog lines just won't work at all soon. It'll be a nice art piece in some hipster's pool room.

This was all but boring mate.... I really enjoyed this and whatever this turns out to be at the end, this was a great adventure!! Well done!

On the key pad you didn't test if the pads on the buttons were actually making contact and triggering the electrical pads on the board. Glad it all worked out but that's something to remember.

My guess is that the diode is for over voltage protection. like lighnings hitting the telephone line.

Hi Vince! I'm becoming a fan after watching your methodical troubleshooting and cleaning process! On this one, after seeing the cradle pop out, with that long barbed stem, I'm 97% sure that hole you can see at 17:02 (just above the left 'write your phone number here' slot) is how to release it.
