Part 3 | The First Order - New Republic War Reimagined | Star Wars

Ойын-сауық

The war between the First Order and the New Republic didn't quite live up to the expectations of the Templin Institute. But are we capable of doing any better? In this episode, we attempt to imagine a conflict that doesn't feel like a historical footnote.

Honestly though I don’t like the idea of Palpatine returning. My idea was that instead of the Sith and the “dark side of force” being the antagonists once again, it could be a sort of “anti force” or the absence of the force. Snoke could be a Kreia-like figure who grew frustrated with the flaws of both the Sith (The dark side) & the Jedi (The light side) and sought to transcend them both but was sealed away in a remote Jedi temple for millennia until Luke, looking for knowledge to rebuild the Jedi order, finds and frees him. Snoke manipulates Luke and his students until a schism occurs with Ben solo and a small group of students joining Snoke. The new fledgling Jedi Order & New Republic vs the Knights of Ren & First Order. The Republic might even be forced to appeal to Imperial remnants for aid against Snokes forces. Rey could also be like the Exile, being an extremely rare Force-sensitive with the ability to negate or drain the power of other force sensitives. Snoke would want her to complete his experiments and rid the Galaxy of the limitations of the Force.

@@chriscortez2036 Everything from the sequels is recontextualized here... It's not outright said whether Luke passed or not after he appeared on Crait. In the "First Order Reimagined" video, it was said that Palpatine wanted to create a new Sith Empire that would subsume the Galactic Empire, the foundation of which had been laid at the end of the first Galactic Civil War. After all, Palpatine was a Sith Lord first and foremost, and he was Emperor second. Also, the appearance of Rey at the end gives me the impression that Luke may have actually decided to adopt her as his own... Assuming that he's more like his portrayal in The Mandalorian here.

Veer's father would also be a stand in for Moltke the Elder. There are several WW1 parallels in this video. For instance the Snoke-Veers Plan bears great resemblance to the Schlieffen Plan, which was a German plan at the outbreak of War with France to march through Belgium and push into Paris hopefully knocking France out of the War and doing so swiftly enough that the British would not be able to assemble sufficient forces to do anything. Just like in the video the Germans came close to success but were stopped by Anglo-French forces at what became known as the Miracle of the Marne.

Wilhelm stated that he would just throw the entire German army east in a single front war, to which Moltke rebuked the “you can improvise the deployment” line. Wilhelm then retorted “your uncle would’ve given me a different answer” Very inspired by WW1 and I love the reimagining.

@@nickroy8387 well true. then again a lot of newly designed ships of the New and Final Order were Fucking stupid once you invest more than two seconds of thought into them... First of all, being able to fly THROUGH an enemy capitalships main body pretty much unhindered is a disaster begging to happen. Also it's a great idea to put a giant hard point EXPOSED on the outside of your ship that A: is directly connected to the main Reactor for energy-deliveryreasons so damage to this the Hard point (the giant gun and the Shield bubbles if that's not clear) risks blowing up your entire ship through damage of the reactor and B: is located in a literal BLIND SPOT for main Anti-Fighterweaponbatteries, which also has been a Known blindspot since at least the days of the Venator. And yes, I consider the Underside of Starcarriers (Venator) and -destroyers (ISD and following designs) being a weak spot when it comes to antifighter - and anticapitalship-weaponry canonized as it's shown multiple times that there is no meaningful weaponry and that fighters will try to get Below Capitalships To avoid getting shredded (like in Episode V with MF dodging several ISDs). This lack of Weaponry also is all present in pretty much all recent canonized Star Wars Games. EDIT: yes, Star Wars was never realistic, that's not the point im trying to make. But a Successor Repeatedly making the same KNOWN mistakes by including same KNOWN weakpoints as its predecessor is in my Eyes stupid even from an in-universe-perspective, as well as Lazy from a writing perspective. EDIT 2: Shieldbubbles mounted on Top of a Commando-Superstructure are also a blindspot for antifighter weaponry as any fire towards them literally risks blowing up the bridge if aim is ever so slightly off.

I erased the entire sequel trilogy altogether and made my own trilogy using the same characters: Movie 1: The New Republic is in crisis. A monarchical alien planet is considering secession while the NR debates whether to open lines of diplomacy or invade. A senile, bed-ridden Chancellor Mon Mothma demands that invasion plans are drawn up (a lifetime of politics and old age have eroded her values). She is nicknamed Empress Palpatine because she refused to step down from being Chancellor. Former Princess Leia suffers several PTSD panic attacks and is confined to her residence where Han, her husband, takes care of her. Han is a former NR Captain who supports them both with his Navy pension. The Millennium Falcon is put in a museum. Rey grows up in a foster home on Chandrilla, the NR Capital, where her force sensitivity lands her in a university that prepares its students to join the Jedi Order under Grand Master Luke. The Uni is incredibly decadent and corrupt with teen pregnancies, drunken brawls and rape incidents. (Luke wanted a new Jedi Order with fewer restrictions on emotions and ended up making Space Harvard!) Rey instead joins the NR Intelligence Bureau as a secret agent. The movie ends with the NR cautiously declaring a peacekeeping mission to the secessionist planet. Movie 2: NR Generals were cautious with the invasion plans because this planet was once visited by Grand Admiral Thrawn of the Galactic Empire. Thrawn returned to Emperor Palpatine and told him not to invade because it was impossible. Palpatine begrudgingly listened to him and established an Imperial embassy on the planet and sent ambassadors to form an alliance. This planet seceded from the NR because they preferred the Empire. The NR can’t bombard the planet because the enemy Starfleet is vastly superior. They hope to cut off the enemy fleet’s resupply by taking their Capital intact. Pilot Poe Dameron, Infantryman Finn, Engineer Rose and Special Agent Rey are deployed to the front lines. The aliens have better technology and tactics. They command air superiority and turn the ground battle into a trench war, regularly slaughtering the NR Army using fake retreats and artillery strikes. In Space, their ships’ shields are impenetrable. Rey is soon able to help sense their weaknesses and helps create a WMD that will wipe out the aliens (can be a gas or a bomb). The aliens and their fleet are annihilated by Rey’s weapon and they lose the conventional war. Mon Mothma passes away and her replacement is a young man with no combat experience who thinks wars are one-sided slaughters. He is brainwashed by Rebel propaganda from the Galactic Civil War and decides to introduce a Total War campaign. Movie 3: The aliens are on their last legs but make the NR Army pay for every inch of ground. When their King is killed, the population is put into manual labor to help harvest their technology. The new Chancellor is impeached as a war criminal. Rey and the others face enormous guilt and PTSD after they helped commit genocide. Rumors are spread on social media that the Imperial Remnant is attacking but the sources are unreliable. A Star Wars Red Scare takes place, nicknamed the Stormtrooper Scare despite no stormtroopers appearing on screen. Rey and her friends look into the distance, the future is uncertain, even with Rey’s foresight… -That took me $0.00 and 10 minutes to make up!

The one flaw that I can find is that Thrawn's loyalty to the Empire was strictly in service to the Chiss Acendency. Thrawn had a habit of cultivating imperial personnel and then sending them to the chiss to aid in their own conflict. If instead of an imperial remnant, it was the Chiss Acendency, strengthened by imperial equipment and personnel procured and led by Thrawn, that tipped the balance in the end, I feel that would be more accurate to Thrawn's character. That's just my opinion though. Other than that, very well done!

In Legends the Empire of the Hand was a completely separate entity from the Chiss Ascendancy, albeit one that drew heavily from the Chiss. Given that precedent, it's not impossible to hypothesize that in this post-Endor scenario that Thrawn would carve out an enclave in the Unknown Regions which would act as a hybrid of what he viewed as the best of Imperial and Chiss ideals, while also claiming it to be the legitimate continuation of the Galactic Empire.

  • @patrickshaw5746

    @patrickshaw5746

    2 жыл бұрын

That's kind of what I was getting at. I think the most likely scenario would have Thrawn return form wherever we see him sent at the end of Rebels to a broken Galactic Empire. Seeing that completing his mission to forge an alliance between the Ascendency and the Empire to combat the Grysks is now impossible, but wishing to salvage anything that he could from the situation, he contacts those whose loyalty he had gained through his career in the Imperial Navy and takes them into the unknown regions to join the Ascendency. These imperial forces integrate into the Ascendency military and give the Chiss access to shield generators, turbolasers, and other technologies that they do not have access to. This boost gives the Chiss an edge that leads to the defeat of the Grysks. Fast forward to the events discussed in this video but with a Chiss Ascendancy that has had decades to learn from and integrate imperial technology, tactics, and personnel. In this scenario, I think it unlikely that there is much of a claim of succession to the Empire. The Chiss are proud to the point that it crosses into arrogance, they wouldn't approve of seeking legitimacy in that way. To bring them into the story, the First Order/Sith Eternal could go looking for those Imperials that disappeared into the Unknown Regions and stumble into the Ascendency. As the war progresses and both sides court allies, the Sith would approach the Chiss to enter the war on their side and the Republic could learn of them from defectors and do the same. The Chiss, being very utilitarian, would absolutely play both sides and bide their time seeking to join the war on the side they believe to be the stronger and leveraging their help for the greatest possible reward and resulting position within the galaxy. Events would then progress like those in the video but with the Ascendency as the deciding factor after being built up throughout the conflict. It would be awesome to see a fleet of Imperial inspired ships with a distinct Chiss spin led by Thrawn jumping to Exegol with the forces of the Republic and wrecking shit. I have just realized how much time I have spent on this and will now go touch some grass. If anyone spends the time to read this, thank you for your time!

@@patrickshaw5746 You make some good points but given how many blank spaces are still left between the end of the Original Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy, your conclusion could just be one out of many possible scenarios that Thrawn goes through. He could return to the Chiss and integrate his exiled Imperial forces with the Ascendancy... or he could establish the Empire of the Hand to serve as a buffer for the Ascendancy - whether they like it or not. At the end of the day it's still possible to conceive a believable scenario that works within Canon wherein Thrawn establishes some sort of successor state for the sake of protecting his people, and that frames itself as legitimate continuation of the Empire to appease any of the Imperials who have chosen to support him (that is until whatever new content that covers that area is released that provides a direct answer and counters any fan hypotheses that don't align).

It’s impressive how this version of the war sounds so similar to the World Wars that Star Wars was inspired by. The initial Sith attack plan is very similar to the Schliffen-Moltke plan, the initial plan of the German Empire in WWI to launch a quick decisive strike while the enemy forces were uncoordinated and knock down the enemy’s will to fight. Yet it failed similarly with the intervention of High Command during victory fever and a decisive battle against the overstretched invaders. The following scrambles are similar to the Race to the Sea as both sides attempted to keep trying a decisive strike in secondary engagements until it all ended in a brutal Stalemate. The New Republic and Sith Eternal recruited other nations to try to tip the balance, just as the Entente and Central Powers (Italy, Bulgaria, Ottomans, Romania) and in one of those, a civil war started that led to just another stalemate (Greek Front, but with also parallels to Italy in WWII). In the middle of the war, the Sith Eternal had a change in leadership and tactics (Just as the German Empire, where Hindenburg and Ludendorff launched an internal coup and intensified the war effort), the killing field tactic is similar also to Ludendorff’s plan which stopped the allied offensives in 1917 by retreating to a more defensible territory and forming the Hindenburg line. Now there are parallels to WWII, such as the fact the Sith were attempting a quick decisive blow because they were ultimately outproduced in the long-term like the Axis Powers. As well as radical extremists in the Sith Eternal acting similarly to the German SS in occupied Europe and searching for secret weapons to turn the tide of the war. The Xyston class is similar to German tanks such as the Tiger II or Jet planes such as the ME-262 which had a decisive early advantage against the enemy forces. Finally, Thrawn’s remnant entering into the war while both sides were exhausted and desperately looking for allies is not so different from the US joining WWI right when the Entente was reeling from the losses in 1917. Overall, it’s great to see historical comparisons, although I still can’t find one for a reborn Emperor Palpatine.

Bringing back Palpatine in any way was a mistake and cannot be done without cheapening Luke/Anakin's victory in the OT. Is Palpatine really just a bunch of clones? Well then Luke just defeated one of many. Was OT palpatine the main guy and this one just a backup clone? Well then good job failing to finish the job guys. Is this the same Palpatine that survived being exploded twice? ... I guess noone IS ever really gone. If you want to do a storyline where the real big bad only gets revealed at the end you absolutely can, but I think it's plain to see that the only reason JJ resorted to Sheev is that Ryan had offed Snoke and he was unable/unwilling to make Kylo into a compelling enough villain to carry the conclusion of three trilogies on his own, let alone pull a completely new, un-foreshadowed villain out of a hat for the final act.

Bringing in Thrawn in the last act with a bunch of Imperial forces on the New Republic side is the sort of third act shake up the sequels really, desperately needed. Something different, graphically distinct, with a compelling central character: Thrawn. It gives a visual chance in the last big set pieces where you'd be able to show Imperial hardware being good at what it does rather then being clowned on, and you can pretty obviously just have Ackbar and Thrawn side-by-side showing off the different styles of strategy. Rogue One showed Mon Calamari actually work on screen in this role, so it would've been a great opportunity to show off the more alien side of the Star Wars universe. The reimagined Sith Eternal Star Destroyers are also a way better choice - overpowered without feeling stupid, and graphically have an obvious sort of "feel" they should be given - like watching nuclear war from space, rather then sort of spectacle which the Death Star and blowing up planets is. Something which feels like the crime it is and has an ominous, creeping threat to it - you can cut from the opening crawl right to a Star Destroyer setting off "the big nuke" on a planet surface, mix it up acoustically with that dull low rumble of a distant explosion rather then any of the drama and whine of the normal Star Wars energy weapons.

Thank you so much for mentioning the Separatist holdouts! The galaxy is a massive place, and one thing totally missing in the sequels was building that scope. It would have been genius of them to allow for a less monolithic Republic, with a wide spectrum of territories all committed to a decentralized galaxy, which both pushes them together but keeps them distinct. Imagine if The Last Jedi, rather than being one of cinema's longest chase scenes, had been focused on the heroes recruiting allies to the Resistance, followed by the First Order at each turn, until eventually the First Order finally gets a step ahead of the Resistance. At the midpoint of the movie, our main cast is welcomed by a well-armed Imperial holdout seemingly ready to turn a new leaf. But, suddenly, our main cast is surrounded by First Order troops and the system's local forces, and the Supremacy suddenly appears in orbit, as the self-important sector Moff only agreed to an alliance with the First Order with the condition of the Snoke and Kylo Ren presenting themselves in the flesh. While some of the main cast is held hostage, after an intense infiltration of the Supremacy by Finn and other Resistance members (some introduced as new allies during the movie?), they're able to create a hole in the security of the star system. Suddenly, Rei returns with Luke Skywalker. Together they and Resistance forces fight their way through in a daring rescue to save Leia, Finn, and other Resistance leaders, until they encounter Snoke, who quickly retreats to the Supremacy. Rei follows while Luke holds Kylo at bay, surrounded by an arena of Resistance, First Order, and former Imperial troops, who create an arena of laser fire whose intensity begins to waver as attention is drawn to the epic duel between Legendary Master and Corrupted Student. As Luke breaks not a sweat during the duel, Kylo is humiliated as he realizes it's just a force projection. Enraged, he beats a hasty retreat after the Dark Master who abandoned him. Sensing this opportunity, Rei coordinates with the infiltrators still on board the Supremacy. After a magnificent, 3-way duel amidst a compromised supercarrier whose hyperdrive is rigged to misfire in a spectacular, silent slice through the fabric of reality, Kylo regains some respect of the First Order by defeating a cowardly Supreme Leader, claiming his title, and beating back the woman seen by many as Skywalker's successor. The stage is set for a new, more aggressive First Order and a bolder, more desperate resistance to finish this war that is spreading like wildfire across the galaxy This is just a spiel but I think I've written a more competent outline for the 2nd movie than JJ Abrams did, albeit with 20/20 hindsight and the Templin Institute's magnificent work as reference.

This is what happens when you get history nerds, universe fans, and authors to write the major storyline. The weaving of themes and events from both our world and theirs is masterful. The correction of ideas from the fever-dream of the Sequels took maybe 6 weeks' worth of localized events and expanded it into 6 years of galaxy-wide conflict. Given the License and the funding, Templin could make this new storyline into decades of new content for the hungry fans. The ending of changing a name into a title, is just the cherry on top of a masterpiece.

Since this is supposed to be an alternate Disney timeline, it could stand to reason that the Chiss Skywalkers became a stronger force comparable to Jedi and Sith through training headed by Ezra Bridger. He’d have nowhere to go after the ending of Rebels, and Thrawn would be all too eager to use Bridger’s powers for the better. Perhaps in this hypothetical timeline, a spinoff or book series would explore Thrawn and Bridger’s time in between the OT and ST, where Bridger’s new Skywalkers, lead by Thrawn’s leadership and Imperial knowledge, defeat the Grysk and bring about a Chiss Golden Age. Fast forward to the revised ST, the Chiss Skywalkers could be brought up in the second movie. Assuming Luke’s duel with Kylo is in the first movie (with it being such a deciding factor in the early part of the war) and that this version of Luke shares TLJ’s Luke’s dislike of the Jedi order, Rey could be referred to the Chiss Skywalkers to further her training for the second movie. Ezra Bridger, having been taught by Ahsoka - a Grey Jedi - would help Rey (and maybe Luke too, if he joined the ride). Whilst they’re in the Ascendancy, Rey could also inspire lower ranking Chiss officers that the Republic is the better option. This exposure would set up the Chiss Ascendancy for the third and final act.

The “Skywalkers” are what I always believed the Jedi should evolve into. The Sith are dead, the Jedi are extinct, now, a new order rises. A new order that embraces attachments, but teaches to let go when the time is right. A new order that doesn’t become involved with galactic affairs, but protects the people of the galaxy from evil. A new order of those who follow the callings of the Force and vanquish any signs of the corruption of the Dark Side. The Skywalkers should’ve been the new order to correct every mistake the Jedi ever made and become the ultimate order of Force users in the galaxy.

Oh dang, what an ending to a fantastic series! I especially loved the implication that Rey's the last jedi, not because the entire concept of them is gone, but because it's been reborn as something new, and named (presumably) for Luke! I don't think I've ever seen anyone suggest something like this in such an interesting, positive way - if the sequel trilogy ever gets redone, the people doing so obviously need to get in touch with the Templin Institute, because this was an absolutely thrilling ride, even in such a simplified format and description!

A nice space Schlieffen plan-WWI story with all the necessary star wars elements. Really loved the fact that the star killer was a one off. The fleshing out of the New Republic as a non-complete entity that had political struggles and the First order/sith eternal as revanchist extremists was great.

Now I have my answer. Thanks for this series, Templin Institute! I always enjoy seeing people speculate on what could have been done better.

What a magnificent reimagining of this originally underwhelming conflict. A actual understanding of ideology, intrigue and military matters has breathed life into this war. Not simply a rehash of the original trilogy, but a timeline that accounts for the well established post Endor lore. Impressive work as always guys! Also, is the lothal a reference to the USS enterprise and it’s exploits during the opening phases of the pacific campaign? Because that’s the vibe I was getting!

I really enjoyed this take on the sequels, the way you guys managed to take the bare bones of the conflict we got in the sequels and found and way to beef it up and make things fit more properly together. I would have liked at the end a little more expansion on your version of Rey’s influence on the war and her battle with Palpatine, but overall, really good stuff 👍🏻

If anyone is interested there is some good fanfiction on the First Order/New Republic war. One is called The Reclaimer and essentially just makes the frisk order competent and makes the universe less black and white Another is called Infinites: The First Order War, which deals with a coalition of Coreallian and the Imperial Remnant fighting off the first order. It essentially reads like a history book and both are excellent reads. Probably going to start work on something in this era once I a finish my Earth in Star Wars series

You people at the Institute made this seem so damn real that it was mind blowing! Adding Thrawn and his remaining forces in towards what seemed to be the end days of the war was a pitch perfect application of the Chiss way of doing things. Also, I loved how ya’ll didn’t dwell solely on the Force and all that. You kept it on a purely geopolitical and military level (ie the secular level, not the “spiritual”). The way you really hit gold was merely mentioning Rey at the end like a myth or a faint whisper in the dark. This was freaking great! Well done! 👍🏻

Excellent reimagining, you basically kept everything at the core of the conflict (even the weird parts like Snoke dying or Palpatine returning) but made it 10 times more epic! Idk how I feel about throwing Thrawn in there tho, that came close to fan fiction levels of Fan Service. Still very cool. Also you introduced so much background stuff that I hope you'll eventually talk about more in depth like the New Separatists and most importantly Rey!

Idk about fan service, its actually reaching into legends lore with what *actually* happened after the fall of the empire. In the situation that Templin created, there needed to be a sort of "mcguffin" that would allow the strike on exogal (dont know how to spell it) and Thrawn has a very established relationship with the unknown regions pre dating any of this, I think his services there were actually mentioned in the first order reimagined series. overall I feel it was more of a merging of the old Legends lore of the second galactic civil war and the war lords, mixed the first order/new Disney cannon and overall story arch. it works very well.

The idea of the resistance simply being a sideshow to the main war is something I really like. If the sequel trilogy had simply focused on the resistance (like it did in the irl one) but had all this going on in the background, it would’ve made the galaxy seem so much bigger, and the consequences of the actions of the main characters so much more important and widespread.

My Galactic Empire, without evil leadership and corruption, proving that can be and is a force for good. Fighting against the all that's wrong with the Empire in the form of a hollow knock-off. Such a redemption was my dream and now it's reality in your cannon :)
