Part 3 of 3: Hurricane 3 vs Hurricane 3 Neo - Used and compared in play by 4 of our league players

Hurricane 3 is one of the biggest table tennis rubber sellers of all time. A classic rubber especially when speed glued. But with the banning of speed glue the Hurricane 3 Neo has been released with what DHS describe as the powerful neo sponge. So how do they compare? Is there a difference between the two and if so what is that difference?
In this video four of our experienced players test both rubbers for serving, pushing, flicking, driving, blocking, looping and chopping. We also compare their speed, spin and control, which the players preferred and how the players felt they compared to their own rubbers including Tenergy 05. The names of these rubbers were covered up whilst filming so the players didn't know what they were testing. This is why the players refer to them as red or yellow.
In part 1 of this series of videos we look at the physical properties and appearance of Hurricane 3 and Hurricane 3 Neo. Grip, tackiness, bounce test, size, weight, sponge and pip structure are all compared.
In part 2 of this series of videos we compare their rebound speed, throw height, reaction to spin and ability to generate spin.

It's probably very time consuming but these videos are very informative and enjoyable to watch. I'd love to see more reviews like this because it gives a different perspective

PathfinderPro that sounds great. There are a few really interesting table tennis channels and yours is one of them. You're more technical and probably appeal to boffins like myself lol. The equipment you have listed sounds pretty substantial. That's great :) To have consistent measurements is really good. Not all of us can afford to try multiple rubbers and blades so these channels are valuable. Keep up the good work, our sport of sort of niche and you're a pioneer of the digital age!

Most Chinese Players use the Hurricane for the Forehand, it's less springy so they can bring the power from their body, hit harder and not afraid the ball to shoot behind the table For The backhand Chinese people will usually use tensor rubbers like the tenergy 05, with the backhand you have less power since you hit the ball in front of the body so you need a rubber which will help you get more speed. So to sump up even though Hurricane consider to be "slower" than tensor European style rubber, in the hand of Chinese Player like Ma long it's a deadliest weapon on the forehand side! For the backhand I'll always suggest to user a tensor rubber.

This has changed a little recently. Due to the properties of the new ball, some Chinese pros have switched back to Hurricane 3 on the backhand. For us non-pros, we should still stick with Tenergy on backhand though.

I am a defensive player and I bought a Hurracane 3 NEO without watching this videos... It is an excellent rubber with magnificent control and spin. Great for all around players!!!

Thank you for this video. I have been using H3 fr more than 5 yrs. The key to get the potential of this rubber is by making impact of sponge on the ball, and not only on the tacky top sheet. With tenergy, it's easier. With a compact swing a la Timmo Boll, you get a good spin. With H3 and Neo, you need to stretch more the swing, preferably at the highest point or slightly after. This demands a good foot work and anticipation. The spin is unique, mr difficult to block/counter, it has strange arc.

Aren't both rubbers meant to be made for players with powerful forehand loops with emphasis on the hips and the legs rather than the arm?

And to compare between the two, in general you are right. H3 was created in speed glue era, so it is generally slower. Neo is more durable and less prone to bubble at the top sheet. But the best of both rubber you get after you use it for about 2 weeks. The surface will be cooked and the stroke will be easier to reach the sponge. A good user will be able to reach not only the sponge but also the material of the blade. This means that even if you use carbon, the feel will reach the carbon :)

H3 generates more spin than Tenergy on a full power topspin drive, but it's harder to generate as much spin as Tenergy with H3 on slower loops.

i know some players who used to train at govt facilities in china when they were younger. they said chinese rubbers vary in quality so whenever they got new shipments, players would rummage through looking for a good one. the rest were tossed back in. once they bought their own rubbers, they preferred butterfly-type rubbers like the two players at the end said: tenergy is way better i've tried both and now i understand. a well tuned h3 with higher tension sponge would do awesome though

In my experience, I am playing since 3 months ago with a Hurricane 3 NEO in my forehand and a T64 in backhand. The reason why I use the NEO is that it's unbelievable the feeling that I have making serves, pushes and heavy backspins. However, this rubber betrays me when a fast shot comes to my forehand and I have no chance to make a countertopspin, so I block it. If I do not make a perfect contact to the ball, it will go down to the net. Still, if you can control the game on the table, it's GREAT

I agree with you. Chinese Rubbers are not suitable for the blocking game. You need to hit harder if you want to get the most out of them. As much as I love the Chinese Philosophy of game at the moment I find myself going into defense and also use the Block shot, so this rubber is not suitable for me at the moment.

Don't be fooled by the price of a product. It's due to many factors in the chain of production: research, materials, where it's produced (Tenergy made in Japan is expected to be more expensive than Hurricane made in China), etc. I'm a penholder and played H1, H2 & H3 on my FH and felt more comfortable with the late one. Recently tried Tenergy 05 & 64 and felt T64 to be the best suited for my FH of all the mentioned before. I won't tell which is better; it's all about how they suit your style.

I have the hurricane 3 Neo on my dhs bat and I find when I'm hitting the ball I find the spin of the ball is a lot more when I tried my friends bat which had hurricane 3.Also I find the hurricane 3 neo a bit more tacky than the hurricane 3.

I have to say that H3 Neo and Skyline TG2 Neo can generate insane amounts of spin and speed! That's if you do a complete and perfect hit on the ball. There's alot of good Chinese technique videos on youtube. :) PS: I'm using Stiga Allround Evolution blade and I can compare my speed to an OFF+ blade.

At the end when the players compared tenergy to the hurricane rubbers didn't take in mind that a piece of tenergy rubber is well over $60 while the hurricane rubber is around $20-$30. Without even playing with either rubber I can easily tell you that tenergy is better because there is a reason it is much more expensive. Hurricane 3 and hurricane neo are rubbers for at most intermediate players and from the looks of it those players are ping pong experts so there cannot be such a comparison.

I have H3 because I borrowed someone's paddle who used it and it literally felt like the best thing ever so I had to buy it on both sides myself, but yea of course it's no Tenergy 05, Tenergy 05 is incredible, but it is probably the worst thing you could ever imagine for your backhand.

..countless Chinese provincial players use H3 Neo. H3 is very linear, low effort shots produce very short balls and maximum effort shots produce spectacular loop drives. You need to have good FH technique to use H3, a Chinese style forehand where you always move forward (except when looping pips chop). Tenergy is good if you have a shorter european stroke but it is not as dynamic as Hurricane 3. Look at the top Chinese players, lots use H3 on FH.
