Part 2 of 3: 2.2mm vs 2.0mm TT sponge thickness - Robot testing: throw height, trajectory & speed

Second in a three part series looking at the differences in performance between 2.2 and 2mm table tennis sponge thickness - using Giant Dragon Maxspin.
In this video we test to see if there are differences in terms of:
1. Maximum throw height
2. Trajectory - high arc or shallow
3. Speed
Using high speed footage we also look at why one of these sponge thicknesses is possibly slower and has a steeper throw arc and show the ball "visibly climbing up the top sheet surface".
We also identify problems with testing and comparing rubbers and why it's important not to look at just one factor, such as sponge thickness, when considering how or why a table tennis rubber performs as it does. In particular we look at tackiness, sponge hardness and thickness and show how different combinations of these factors can have significantly different results.
Other videos in this three part series are:
1. Physical properites including dome, curl, weight, top sheet, tacky test, grip test, cutting on a bubble in the top sheet and other possible quality control issues
and
3. Human testing - demonstrates how different people can rate the same rubbers performance.differently in terms of serving, returing serve, pushing, top spin driving, blocking, power loop, brush loop, smash, chopping and questions the relevance of generic speed, spin control ratings.

    I think that the 2.0 is faster on the sheet of glass because less sponge means more effect from the hard glass

    I have kokataku 868 hercules blue sponge i boosted with 3 layers of paraffin oil. Slightly tacky but spin is really severe immense. It cost me 6$ on aliexpress i have ordered 8 of them. Boosted effects still there even after 3 months however less during first 3 weeks of play. Medium tacky i love it 😊😊

    Another excellent video! Good work! I am still trying to digest everything. The part about the 2mm sponge being faster doesn't surprise me but the test is flawed because the 2mm and 2.2mm sponge are different hardnesses so they are definitely not made of the same material. Still sponge absorbs energy so I would expect a 2mm sponge to ALWAYS be faster than a 2.2mm sponge IF they are made of the same material. I am interested in how you made the overlaid videos. More later.

    I understand the problem with the sponge quality and not getting what you think you are buying. I bought a 1mm 1.5mm 1.8mm 2mm and 2.2mm HRS sponges just to find that they weren't the same hardness. My plan was to do a similar test but it is hard to tell the difference between a 2mm and 2.2mm sponge. I was going to stack the sponges so I could have up to 8mm of sponge. The difference between a 2mm and 8mm sponge, and various thicknesses in between, should be dramatic. E-mail me on gmail.

    depends on the camera used. If I'm shooting really fast footage it's 1000fps

    Try to consider these things for precise and accurate result: 1. Ball size, seem or seemless, shape or roundness and weight must be all "uniform"... not all balls are the same even with the same batch of production. 2. Please double check and do "tests" for the robot's accuracy and performance before the experiment. 3. Use at least 2 constant variables like the same thickness and the same tackiness "at a time". Dont mixed-up the properties for the rubber same experiment. Example: Rubber. Tackiness Thickness 1. Rubber a yes. 1.8 2. Rubber b yes. 1.8 3. Rubber c yes. 1.8 4. Rubber d yes. 2.1 5. " e. yes 2.1 6. " f yes 2.1 7 " g no 1.8 8. " h no. 1.8 9. " i. no 1.8 " no 2.1 " no 2.1 " no 2.1 Variables are racket angle, thickness, tackiness, speed of the ball, spin of the ball, etc.

    Unfortunately, I expect most of your observations to be caused not by the thickness of the sponge but by its hardness (since you discovered it was different in the previous video). I'm afraid it's very difficult to draw any conclusions on the effect of thickness in this case.

    rubber is a natural product so even with strict and similar chemical formulations the characteristics of every batch may still differ to a certain degree which may affect the tackiness and performance of the rubber. Even every batch of wood differ. Anyway TT is an art and not a science and depends greatly on handfeel. These tests should only be taken as a general guide. Having said that let us all just enjoy this great game, both for exercise and fun. Cheers.
