In Part-2 of this two part series, we will install the electric water pump and thermostat on a typical late model BMW with the N-series 6-cylinder engine We will be using an E90 335i, but these general procedures will apply to most models that have the N engine. See Part-1 for the removal.
The Bentley repair manuals will cover model specific points, torque values and fill quantities. This DIY will assume that the DIYer has the applicable Bentley manual for additional references.
Since the thermostat resides beside the water pump, and the pump must be removed in order to replace the thermostat, we highly recommend that the thermostat be replaced when the pump is replaced. We normally would also recommend that the coolant hoses be replaced while the system is drained. However, in these models the only hose that is readily accessible for replacement is the thermostat to water pump hose. We would suggest replacing this hose, but the others would require quite a bit of additional work.
PARTS USED:
• Water pump
• Water pump mounting bolts
• Thermostat
• Thermostat to water pump hose
• Various size hose clamps
• O-ring assembly lubricant
• BMW coolant
• Distilled water
TOOLS USED:
• 3/8" drive E-Torx socket set
• Flex shaft hose clamp driver
• Spill-Free coolant funnel
• Form-A-Funnel
• Garage Guard absorbent mat
• 3/8" drive sockets, universal joint, extensions and ratchet, 8mm -- 13mm
• 17mm open-end wrench
• Various flat-head and phillips screwdrivers
• 10-amp battery charger
PROCEDURE:
1) Safely and properly raise and support the front of the vehicle. This repair task can be performed with the vehicle on jack-stands or using drive-on ramps.
2) Remove the forward under-chassis splash panel.
3) Disconnect the power steering cooler hose assembly mount on the passenger side and move the hoses rearward and toward the driver side. Use a piece of wire or a cable tie to hold the hose assembly out of the way.
4) Remove the two mounting nuts on each swaybar mount and lower the swaybar. Move the bar toward the rear of the vehicle and tie it up with a section of wire or a cable tie.
5) Remove the water pump harness plug wiring connector plug.
6) Place the coolant catch pan under the water pump. Using the flexible hose clamp driver, loosen the hose clamp on the thermostat to water pump hose (the nipple that is facing the rear of the vehicle) and carefully pull the hose off the water pump inlet nipple. This will drain most of the coolant that is in the water pump, thermostat and local hoses.
7) Use the flex driver to loosen the water pump outlet (supply) hose. The hose nipple points toward the passenger side and is above and to the rear of the thermostat (look at the new water pump to help locate the nipple and hose). We cannot remove the hose as it is solidly mounted. We will pull the water pump from the hose, in step # 13.
8) Remove the two lower water pump mounting bolts, using an E12 Torx socket.
9) Place the coolant drain pan under the forward end of the thermostat and water pump. Disconnect the radiator to thermostat hose (large plastic hose elbow at the forward end of the thermostat) by pulling out the locking wire on the quick disconnect fitting and pulling the fitting off of the thermostat nipple. Allow the coolant to drain.
10) Remove the two thermostat mounting bolts.
11) Pull the ground cable from the mounting clip that is affixed to the water pump rib, just forward of the upper water pump mounting bolt. Look at the new pump and use a light to locate the ground cable and the clip. Pull the cable out of the clip and push the clip off the rib (toward the passenger side), using a long screw driver.
12) We're sorry, but the description can not be any longer (youtube requirement). Watch the video and see our tech blog for the full DIY steps at blog.bavauto.com/14581

Thank you BavAuto and Otto for these great water pump videos #1 and #2. With your assistance I was able to replace the pump and thermostat in my '06 325i. Lots of challenges along the way like reaching that third torx bolt on the pump and then getting the hoses back on. That clip on the front hose to the thermostat fell off and landed inside the fan shroud. Nice. So I learned how to remove and replace a fan too which was remarkably easy. Having the fan out made access to that hose connection easier. Did the front pads and rotors while I had the car up and replaced the battery too. Thank you again!

Thank you very much for these two videos, fantastic explanation every step of the way. I did this job on an e92, RWD with the N54 but on ramps. It is doable on ramps, but a lift would make the job much more comfortable. Replacing the top water pump bolt was the toughest part for me as my aftermarket intercooler takes up more space than the stock intercooler. A cold beer and some patience, I was able to blindly get the bolt mounted and started with one hand.

Hi Otto, Thanks a lot for the great video! I think it helped me and many others a lot, especially where and how to remove the third bolt... There are two things I'd like to add: 1) I would recommend to drain the majority of the coolant through the drainage screw on the cooler (there is either one screw on one side of the cooler or one on each side). Here, the coolant can be drained quickly and with less spillage. Tighten the drainage screw very carefully (only 3 Nm!) 2) I found it easier to get access to the small quick disconnect hose from the engine bay (maybe the reason is that I don't have an auto hoist and had to work in the usual difficult diy position). It was a really annoying job to do but now it is done. Anyone who is unsure whether he can do it just be aware that Otto is a professional and the video shows the procedure in a very smooth way. It will not be that easy doing it yourself for the first time but anyone who does some service and other work on his car regularly should be fine. You should have enough time, as well. I needed 6 hours to do the job.

The bleeding process requires the full ignition to be on and the pump to be running. This can reduce the battery voltage to the point where the vehicle power management system starts to shut down systems and throw faults.

I used this video as a reference to replace the thermostat and it proved to be extremely helpful. My father-in-law gave me his '07 335i and while looking through the service records, I saw that the water pump was replaced 6 months ago but not the thermostat. Why they didn't just replace the thermostat while they were down there is beyond me. I'm assuming the dealership knew he'd be back in 6 months to get it replaced. **If you plan on only replacing the water pump, please do yourself a favor and replace the thermostat too! TRUST ME!** Anyways, as dumb as this sounds, the most labor intensive and time consuming part for me was reattaching those 2 "quick"-disconnect hoses. I didn't have enough room to get both hand up there and effectively push them together. Four hours later, I heard the first hose click into place and almost started crying from joy. I don't understand BMW's logic behind some of these repairs (why did I have to remove the radiator to change out my tensioner pulleys!?) but man, do I love these cars.

This job was HELL on my e90 328xi. The subframe is totally different and blocks access to the hose clamps and makes disconnecting the snap fittings near impossible. Here is what I learned from doing this project. 1. Remove right front wheel 2. Radiator does not need to be removed. Some people said it made it easier, the connections are all brittle and are stuck on. There is enough room to work without removing the radiator. 3. Remove the aluminum stiffener plate. You can't get to the pump with out removing it. 4. Use silicone grease on all orings in the snap connections. You might even use a bit on the hose connections. 5. Make sure to disconnect the battery. My e90 has some parasitic draw when the hood is open. 6. Do a practice fit with the old pump and water pump. The hoses will self align. Tighten everything once on the car. 7. When you bleed the pump, make sure you close the bleeder screw and radiator cap. Some diys say to loosen the bleeder screw when bleeding the system.

Daniel Fratamico i just did my 335xi N55 e90 without removing any wheels. Probably would be easier to remove it. Im a skinny guy so i was able to fit my hands around the back to get those hoses off & it was a bitch. The worst part is the screws on clamps were facing downwrd and no room at all to get to. I had to bend the hoses to turn the thermostat to face me so i can unscrew the clamps. It took me 10 fuckin hours. Probably 8 hours takinng the thing out & 2 hours putting it in. I also put the screws facing me for next time (i hope theres no next time) to make a 10 hour job a 3 hour job. What a terrible spot the pump is in on the 335xi smh. Also to mention i worked with the front of the car jacked up, so that also made it a bit hard.

I am very thankful for this diy. Dealership quoted $1,200. to replace water pump on our 325i 2006 with 58k. After watching this video it gave me enough confidence to do it myself. I did it on 8” ramp. Got new pump and thermostat ($450.). It took me about 3h and it was fairly easy to do. Must say lubing inside pipes and nipples (vaseline in my case) as recommended in this diy is a must.

I have a 2007 328xi which is similar but more difficult to change the water pump and thermostat because there is a giant bar in the way. Steven L in the comment below mentions: "If you have the 335 xdrive model then there are a couple more things you need to remove in order to gain access to the water pump. You don't have any access from underneath as you see in this video since there is a huge steel bar that runs underneath it. You have to remove the intercooler and fan and then the stab bar and then work some magic from underneath and also from the pass side to get to all the places." I'm not sure if the 335 xdrive is similar to my 328xi but he also mentions a huge steel bar. Does anyone have a guide to get around this or to remove the bar if that's even possible? Thanks

Great video! I have one question. I was told that when you bleed the coolant system that the water pump was suppose to constantly run for those 12mins. I thought my water pump was bad because it cycled on and off, but you said that the water pump should do this? Correct? Thanks a bunch..

Thank you for the video. I am uncertain whether my waterpump has failed or not. My BT tool says there was a low RPM error, but not currently present. If the engine runs and I remove the filler cap, should I visually see water circulation or not necessarily. I tried the bleeding procedure to see if I hear the pump, but I dont really hear much except "quiet" noises. I dont want to buy a pump if I have an electrical problem instead. Is there a simple way of confirming that the pump is working?

hi.. first of all, perfectly accurate DIY instruction. thumbs up on that.. I've one question though.. during the bleeding process (approx. for the first 6min) the water pump was really loud and it sounded as it ran dry like there were no water but only air inside.. I could hear the water circulate though... Does it suppose to sound like it? I wasn't present all the time till the end of the process though.. but when I returned, it didn't sound like it any more, cause the bleeding process was over, I guess.. now I'm not sure whether the new pump is faulty or not.. and if I can start the car or should I initiate the bleeding process once again??

I have a 2006 BMW 525i also. Do you need to replace thermostat when replacing water pump? Is it mandatory?

Hi steve . Is there an easy way to replace the cylinder thermostat hose without removing the pump and thermostat housing ? The plastic that connects to the block broke and it's the only thing that needs replacing. But there is no room from top or bottom of car to disconnect the hose from thermostat. 2008 535i Thank you

I'm stuck at trying to bolt on the top water pump e12 bolt. I was able to remove it easily but getting it back on to torque it tough.

Very well done video. I would suggest that the correct orientation of the water pump-to-thermostat hose (11537521049) can be set by performing a trial fit on the bench. Temporarily bolt the thermostat to the water pump and install the hose on the assembly. Cinch down the end attached to the thermostat and unbolt the water pump. Then proceed with the thermostat installation.

There are better alternatives. Pentosin NF, Zerex G48, Beck Arnley Euro concentrate. Oreillys and NAPA have the Zerex G48, Autozone and Pepboys, sells the Pentosin NF. Zerex G48 is BMW approved for use in their cars. Less expensive than the BMW product but is the same thing.
