I don't think to bad to work on them, it's easier to work on my duece, but still easier to work on then then newer vehicles like Jim said. Only thing sucks, is price of parts, and only got worse in last few years.

Maintenance is easy on most of them, except the 936. There’s always a special section in the TM for the 936 cause there are extra steps on account of the wrecker body being in the way.

@@jimbo80982ain't that the truth! Heck, Chris had this thing running on half watered-down diesel! Military vehicles may not be comfortable, BUT THEY ARE MADE TO RUN whether you have half of it shot up or just have motor oil for fuel! I wish civilian cars were made more like this: less electronics, more mechanical and fire-hardened!

Great video guys. Chris, you and Jen seem like sweet, caring, kind and genuinely nice people. The world needs folks like you! My Dad was in the Canadian Army for 36 years - they called 5 tons HLVWs (Heavy Logistical Vehicle, Wheeled) and deuce-and-a-halfs MLVWs (Medium Logistical Vehicle, Wheeled). I worked as a civilian at a Cadet camp in my 20s and they called deuce-and-a-halfs MBFATs (Medium Big F*cking Army Trucks). I rode in a few as a kid - Dad was a vehicle tech in the earlier part of his career and has no doubt wrenched on plenty and driven more! Mom and Dad are still alive and well - Dad is 81. Keep up the great work!

Coming from someone who has been around trucks and heavy equipment for over 60 years, this truck would not pass a DOT check and should not be driven on any public roads. I have converted dozens of Deuces and 5 tons from 6x6 to 4x4 and the rear springs on this probably came from a 1 ton military trailer. They are not strong enough or safe to be used on this rig. AXLE TWIST WILL occur. JUST MY TWO CENTS. I also spent 4 years in the Marine Corps in Motor Transport and I know these trucks and others well. Semper Fi. 1967-1971.

Highly recommend pure silicone grease on the O-ring and I even use it on the beads and valve stem grommet when I’m rebuilding the wheels. I’ve done about four so far and they don’t lose air. I believe the silicone keeps the water off the surfaces. When I took them apart I had to clean RTV off of them and they were rusty in the O-ring grooves. I particularly liked your fuel system cleaning efforts and need to check mine. There is a spin on filter kit that’s a nice upgrade and is on my list.

@@tihspidtherekciltilc5469 you are correct about the dodge part. But he is right when you bob a 5 ton or a deuce they look different and drive different. In addition the 5 ton part refers to off-road load capacity, so when u drop a axle and cut a frame your load capacity drops, so he is right it’s no longer a 5 ton.

@14:17 - Check with your local supplier of fuel nozzles to find something called fuel/water finding paste. You can smear a little bit on a stick then dip the tank. You can very quickly determine if you have fuel/water in the tank and exactly the levels of both. We used to use this to stick the underground storage tanks at fueling stations.

I would add some Hot Shot Diesel extreme to your fuel, works great on farm equipment that has been sitting for awhile.

When it was castrated (an axle removed) it's ability to be considered a 5-ton was also lost.

WOW!!!!! The shit/people I see on KZread by so called "mechanics/handyman" makes me laugh most of the time. You sir, are not one of them! You're actually smart and I can't pick apart your video how to do it better/smarter, and claim to be a professional! Don't get me wrong, I don't know everything, but it i'm not making videos claiming to. I'm just saying it's nice to not see someone fake it to make it! Nice work brother, I love it! You've got incredible problem solving skills! GREAT WORK BROTHER! It's refreshing to see someone who is actually working smart that knows how to problem solve! You deserve all the follows!

What a cool truck! Amazing it gets 12 mph. Here's an idea. Buy a used camp trailer and put it in the bed of the truck. Military/overlander. That would be a fun series to watch.

Um, as a ex mechanic in the Marine Corps, where I would work on these trucks, I have to say your lighter to diesel test isn't valid because diesel isn't AS flammable as gasoline (Higher flash point, you can put a blow torch to it), but it can catch on fire if you try hard enough and it does burn for longer when lit. But it does look like you have some water in that fuel. Other than that, you are pretty spot on on allot of things. Have fun with your truck.

I'm not sure which exact part you're referring to, but if it's the part I'm thinking of, the test I was doing was listening for crackle and pop when it was burning. Which indicates water. Or maybe you're referring to when I soaked the towel and tried lighting it and it didn't light. That means it's water. Diesel will always light if it's soaked into anything that acts as a wick. Like a rag or a paper towel. Now if you were to pour diesel on a table or concrete, yes that will be much harder to light and will probably not stay burning.

Glad I have stumbled on to this guy. Watching him work on the tire is hurting me watching. I would tell him the how to bug he does get it done. Hard way but he does get it done. Me I like to save the effort in my old age. Good luck, and I will keep watching.

Handy tip keep a few broom handles around lay them down in front of hub and once the wheel is rolled onto them you can easily push the wheel onto the hub no problem. I do it with wheels twice the size of them and it works a treat

FYI a full fuel tank is leaving a air gap. Diesel will expand on a hot day it’s cold coming out of the ground then expanding as it warms up! I would leave the fuel about 4” below the cap. Try to always park with a good amount of fuel (full) to help with condensation. Thumbs up 👍

Dudes a beast with way to much knowledge for one person. If that’s even a thing. I hope I can learn everything he knows. If I could afford it. I’d shadow him for 2 months. I’m not to far away. Would be well worth it if I could!
