Also, since the US are so far and the UK so close (it takes only 3 hours of train to go to London from Paris), I think it's easier for us to speak with a British-ish accent because it the accent we're taught in school and it's easier to visit or even meeting British people is easier. The problem is nowadays, American TV shows and stuff are so popular, we tend to mix both, between what we learnt in school and what we hear in TV shows.

Mastering simple structures is not enough to consider yourself as fluent in English. For instance I am able to express anything in English (which is not my mother tongue) but I can’t talk without stuttering, so I can’t define myself as fluent and hence I am not bilingual. @@EmperorSheevPalpatine My understanding is that when qualifying something as a nationality, one treats it as an adjective, drops the indefinite article (un/une) and writes the nationality in lower case. But when identifying something as a noun (ie a Frenchman or the Frenchman), you use the indefinite article and capitalize the nationality. My intent was to identify myself as a singular American woman, implying that I do not represent •all• American women or citizens.

To be able to successfully communicate ideas and concepts. You don’t necessarily need to have an “R.P. accent” to express yourself. Be proud of your heritage and efforts at learning English as a second language. Educated people will appreciate you’re not native speakers and will help out offering tips and corrections. It’s only the ignorant who will look down at you for not having some perfect diction. 🥂

I'm from Hawai'i and I am learning French. I love the French accent; it has a musical quality to it. I think the French accent makes English sound beautiful. Seeing them practice their English is adorable. My mom grew up bilingual. Her parents first language is French. When my Mom was growing up in the 70's they would get in trouble if they spoke French at school. During that time there was a lot of racism towards people who only spoke French. I feel sad for my Mom because there was so much negative messaging about speaking a second language. For me growing up I learned English and Hawaiian and in high school I took Japanese for four years. I wish I would had learned French so much earlier. I think my Mom was fearful to teach her children because of how badly her family were treated when she grew up.

They speak English really well - better than 95% of Anglophones speak French (or any other language for that matter) and their accents are far more pleasant on the ear than quite a few native English accents too. And the chap with the leather jacket and scarf.... wow he's utterly gorgeous. I'm not actually a fan of Paris, but if he lives there, then my appreciation for the city has just improved considerably!!

I thought this was disrespectful in the subtitles. After all how many Anglos can speak other languages and how would they feel if they get subtitled like this. They'd cry and never even try to speak anything but English because that's how insecure they are about their intelligence.

I wish french people learned english more extensively in their education system. It would greatly enhance their ability to communicate with people from other countries and open up more opportunities for them in the global job market. Additionally, it would also foster a greater cultural exchange between France and English-speaking nations, promoting understanding and cooperation on an international level.
