The Worst Things about France

Ойын-сауық

My lovely France! The country of my biggest inspirations, Cyprien and Norman. I should have learned French before coming to Paris because I found myself in some very embarrassing situations.

I went to France with a French man and I'd had studied French for four and a half years, but I was rusty. We were at a beach and I ordered a "a coke with a lot of ice." "Je voudrais un coca-cola avec beaucoup de glace." However, it came out "Je voudrais un coca-cola avec beaucoup dégueulasse." Hahaha! I didn't even know the word for "disgusting." The waiter looked at me like I was purposefully being one of the "awful Americans." My friend had a good laugh though and corrected my order. I had always messed up with using "de, du and des."

Fun fact: when a French person offers you a particular activity or something in particular (it also depends on the context) you can answer "ok je suis chaud" or "ok je suis grave chaud" which means "I accept without any hesitation ", it is an expression much used in France. Example: - Viens on sèche les cours pour aller au ciné ( -Come we skip class to go to the movies ) - Ouai je suis chaud ( - Yeah, I'm serious hot )

I dug into the language, as a french native speaker, and realized that the reason why it doesn't make sense, it that because it indeed doesn't make sense. A lot of things are random ideas to appear sophisticated. Earlier in the world, a fancy and sophisticated language was a sign of refined/superior society, implying advanced development, wealth and morals. Sure a lot of advanced and subtle linguistic complexities can be made using French, but really it says a lot about the obsession for the sophisticated (regardless of efficiency) of the french culture. I use English way more often, it's easier to compose with.

@@alxmtncstudio2066 , I'm not French, but I'm not going to let you talk so much bullshit, the language is complicated for a simple reason, from the Gallic language formed of Celtic dialects, to Gallo-Roman, passing through its Germanic influences with the Franks. whereas French (Francien) tends to get closer to Latin under the action of clerics and scholars from the end of the Middle Ages and especially during the Renaissance with the borrowing of many words from classical Latin, but also from Italian.for example, modern French has sought to eliminate the letters k and w, which were considered too un-Latin, even though these letters were commonly used in Old French It's just complicated because the language is the image of its history, complicated and rich, It's incredible to be so ignorant of your own history. the French you speak now is the French of the "bas-peuple" So much for a refined/superior society right ? :'))))

As an Ontario Resident (Ontarian?) In Toronto I made that mistake when I went to Montreal to see my cousins in July. I said to my cousin “OMG je suis tres chaud” trying to speak French while we were going to a connivence store and she stared at me so shockingly so I said louder “OMG JE SUIS TRES CHAUD COUSIN” and like 15 people near us heard it. I think people thought me and my cousin were in an intimate relationship. When she explained that “je suis chaud” means “I want to have hard sex” I almost committed euthanasia and every time I think about it I want to die

Well, _"je suis chaud"_ doesn't necessary mean I'm horny in France. It depends on the way you say it and the context. You can also say je suis chaud when you're about to start a fight. It'll mean you're really, really pissed and about to explode. _"Je suis chaud"_ also means _"I'm in!/to be up for sthg"_ . For example: _"Qui est chaud pour un restaurant ?"_ (who's up for a restaurant?) _"Je suis chaud/partant !"_ (I'm in!)

Thank you I thought I was going crazy! I've watched a few of these videos and I feel like these guys are just like to make it seem like one mistake in French will get tourists sent to prison for being a sex offender. In reality even if some of these things can have sexual meanings, most of them don't work out of context and people will understand what you meant, some of them like "Je suis chaud" also have other meanings in other contexts that are more popular than the sexualized meaning. All in all I just feel like this would scare language learners, I know if I didn't know French I would have taken this for the truth without second guessing it, it's made me more skeptical about videos like this on languages I don't know.

Better than thinking, people should always check their information before commenting to the world all the misconceptions they have :). Hilarious video. Congrats. I've learned French since I was at school and I can say that I'm pretty fluent at a high intermediate level. Even though, I still have trouble with the numbers soixante- dix, quatre-vingt and quatre-vingts-dix. I sometimes decided to substitute them myself by septante, huitante, nonante but people will immediately correct you. Ok, so that's it, having a hard time having to think about two seconds what quatre-vingts-dix-neuf is.

It makes a big difference where in France you go. The attitude of Parisiens is more like New Yorkers. I often go skiing in the Haute-Savoy. The people are super friendly there. When they hear French is not my native language, they will switch to English. (But I am talking about people working tourism here). If I tell them I would like to practice my French and could they speak French slowly to me, they will do just that. J'aime les Savoyards! (And their food and wines. And the Genepi of course)

I can somewhat understand it from the locals point of view. They are living in a city that receives 30 million international tourists a year. That's whole different level than any other major global city. New York receives around the same amount in total, but only 5 million of those visitors are outside US. I'm sure it grows old for many Parisians to be answering the same questions daily while just trying to get to work.
