Parisian Needlefire Knife-Pistol Combination

Combination knife/gun weapons have been popular gadgets for literally hundreds of years, and this is one of the nicest examples I have yet seen. This sort of thing is usually very flimsy, and not particularly well made. This one, however, has a blade which locks in place securely and would seem to be quite practical. The firearm part is also unique, in that it uses a needle fire bolt action mechanism. This is a tiny copy of the French military Chassepot system, complete with intact needle and obturator.
And, of course, since it is French the trigger is a corkscrew.

I was thinking of calling it French Roulette. Load the pistol, have 6 friends sit in a circle, and open the bottle. Survivors share the bottle, reload the pistol, and open another bottle. Repeat until self preservation outweighs your ennui and existential dread.

In fact, even before you mentioned this place I was having it in mind, as it is now a very high end cane shop specialized in modified ones such as swordcanes, pistolcanes, and even canes with a painting palette in their frame.

Holy shit, I just realised. This isn't a gun with a knife and corkscrew attached. This is actually a pocket knife that has a gun attachment as a bonus gimmick. The corkscrew makes perfect sense, in that case. It's not primarily a self-defense weapon or a fighting dagger or anything, it's a utility tool that you can shoot someone with. The paneling, the corkscrew, it's all extremely classic as a French gentleman's knife, it just happens to be a gun as well. I'm speechless.

hi Ian. This gun-knife would have come from the shop of a silversmith named Tinnenbrock . They specialised in inexpensive English silverware, particularly tableware. They also repaired silver-plated objects and sold silver-plating and polishing compounds. This association with cutlery might explain the quality of the blade, as well as the style of the handle. Sometime between 1864 and 1870 the business was taken over by Berthod. Unsure yet exactly when or under what circumstances.

I know this is an old video, but I just had a hilarious idea. Imagine finding one of these in a survival horror game. Your supplies are so limited that you may actually want to use the handful of paper cartridges in the grip, and then it functions as a melee weapon after it's all spent. Bonus points for needing to use the corkscrew on some weird puzzle involving an old wine bottle.

Cool video Ian, but the fact that the blade is under spring tension, and the notch on the heel of the blade tells with absolute certainty that this is an automatic knife, i.e. switchblade. I see no apparent mechanism, so the bolster might be the actual lever both to snap the blade open, and to close it. It used to be a common mechanism back in the days. You see the pin in the wider section of the bolster? It engages the blade notch and rests on the spring, so if you grab it like a switchblade, barrel facing outward and corkscrew inside the palm, and pinch both bolsters between your thumb and index finger, and in this grip bring the bolster back, it should deploy the blade. If this doesn't work, and it might not, try fiddling with it a bit more, it is absolutely certain that it does have a mechanism to switch the blade open.

Beautiful historic piece! In Italy they were called "scacciacani" (gun to chase away dogs) and were used precisely to ward off dogs that often pursued the first intrepid cyclists. The French craft shops were renowned for their quality and beauty.

Ah that quaint tradition of mating a gun to an everyday object like a pocket knife, keys, a cane, books, cutlery, locks etc ... It's not so much an indicator of the safety/risk of the period, as an indicator of the willingness of manufacturers to offer the latest in "vital self-defense capability" Given that the majority of these weapons were more likely to annoy than to serious injure they pretty much rank in the gadget area. But they are so incredibly diverse and often quite clever that it's a pleasure to behold.

If you don't consider this to be a weapon but a fancy everyday-carry multitool for a gentleman this is actually quite impressive thing. You have a corkscrew to open the wine, knife for variety of tasks (including stabbing your ex-sweetheart new lover) and little gun to impress your fellow gentlemen or shoot a thug in a dark alley. This would make great b-day gift back in the time.

Two things that impress me about this video 1) I totally mistook the scale of the gun from the picture (I thought it was full size) and 2) Ian not laughing when he said “it’s not designed for long range shooting” as he pulled a corkscrew trigger

I just received a cablegram, the Japanese military attache in Paris commissioned the construction of this item. It seems there was a short American fellow causing all manner of trouble back home and this was going to be just the ticket to take care of him when the attache returned to Japan, with a few cases of wine of course.

I can imagine a Frenchman trying to kill him self with this weapon, and the newspaper read, man found in ally took several days to dye from self inflicted small caliber wound, combined with attempts to cut his own wrist, finally having seen enough he gouged his own eyes out unusually with a cork screw contained in the same weapon.

This makes me think that a "corkscrew bayonet" is a thing that should have existed atleast once if for nothing else than for Ian to eventually make a video out of. Then again "corkscrew trigger" is perhaps equally as terrifying and perplexing of a concept.
